alone in the park

Tate Museum loneliness. Larger version is here.

Just a short note to you, my friends here on Open Salon, that I'll be traveling again without much of an itinerary for the next week or two. Eventually I'll end up in Santa Fe to help my friend do some things in her gift shop that she has near the Plaza. I'll be taking the long way there on back roads and will be off before dawn tomorrow.

Even though it's well out of the way, I'll be taking the southern route. I heard through a friend that a much beloved art installation, the Prada Marfa store near Valentine Texas, has been vandalized to the point that it will not be restored or rebuilt. Bullets embedded in the bullet-proof plastic windows and door and the outside walls covered in graffiti makes me sad indeed. Boyd Elder, the long time caretaker, said it was always the intention to let the store disintegrate over time, but hoped that it could have happened in a more natural way. It was never intended to be what the Cadillac Ranch became—a collaborative work of art. I don't think vandals add anything to the Prada Marfa store.

So I go to take some images of its demise.

The image at the top reminds me of sadness in public places—and then what we ought to do about it. It was taken long ago—some thirty five years in the past—outside the Tate Museum in London on a lonely wet October day. The original Kodachrome image was a bit unremarkable—a little out of focus. So I painted it. There wasn't much to be done with the slide at the time it was developed, it had to wait for the advent of the digital age for me to work some magic into it, to make beauty out of the sadness. (The woman and I did talk after I took the shot—she wasn't homeless, but nearly so. She just loved to sit in this small park next to the museum as part of her routine. I'm not sure what she made of me, but we had a nice chat.)

I'll be checking in, off and on, but there is a beauty in the silent solo photo road trip, and I intend to nurse what I can from it, so my visits here will be sporadic and infrequent for a while.

It's a horrible shame that the Prada Marfa store has such an ignoble end, but I'm happy I've documented a bit of it. I'd like to get some photos of its passing to honor the artists and caretakers.

So, this is just a heads up to let you know that I'm on the road, and haven't left OS. I'm saddened by the departures of some friends, but things change and evolve. We grow, even if diminished.

Make some beauty today, in some form or another. I'll be back.

Be safe in all your travels BBD. and check back in now and again to let us know how things are going dear.
always love each and every post you put up.
I'm sorry to hear that about Prada Marfa; vandals suck. Today I'm trying to make beauty by clearing last fall's dead plant stalks and leaves out of my front planting beds. It's a lot of work but will be worth it when I'm done and the beds look all orderly again and everything is blooming. So far to go, so faaaaar to go...
sadness and road trips can combine in beautiful melancholy. be safe and well and share love wherever you go, as you always do.
Barry, so sorry to hear about the Prada Marfa. I've no doubt that you will record its sad demise in a hauntingly appropriate fashion. I look forward to a visual travelog in the coming weeks!
So much sadness in all the world just now. Perhaps the sadness is always there and we are all just now in these moments noticing. Your thoughts here speak to me. Making beauty out of the sadness - what gifts you give. May your journey be safe.
Be safe, Barry and treat yourself well on your solitary road trip - recharge, revitalize, all that good stuff. Will miss your presence here, but looking forward to your return. And thanks for the heads-up so no one will think you've jumped ship. :)
xoxo

Have a wonderful trip Barry. Can't wait to see the wonderful photographs you come back with. Peace.
...with your new photos I hope, godspeed Barry.
Santa Fe in April -- should be great....Here's hoping for happy trails through west Texas.
You see blue like no other human being.
In a strange way, documenting Prada Marfa as vandalized is indeed a form of natural disintegration...natural to a certain segment of American society. Or maybe a karmic demise to a store that is so out of reach, out of touch, and represents so much that the average American cannot grasp. I look forward to your travel photo essay. Happy trails to you until we meet again :)
Have a great trip. If they had always planned to let that Art installation disintegrate naturally it will be interesting. Bullet holes don't really seem natural but man is part of this crazy world so I guess that might be considered natural in a bizarre way. Looking forward to seeing what you find. Thanks.
Drive safely, my friend. Godspeed.
the lure of long vistas and lonely places is a strong one, one that tugs at me all too often. enjoy your journey, friend. feel the road.

oh, and the Tate painting is magnificent.
Enjoy your journey~r
Make beauty, not war.

Thanks Barry. Loved the above images. Have a safe trip and we'll all look forward to your visuals later.
Have a safe trip Barry and looking forward to the fruits of your adventure...
thank you for the music, good weather for your trip, BBD
Sadness--"and then what we ought to do about it." I like that idea; like it a lot--the "ought" implies "can"--as you do, BBD.
This news saddens me greatly. I've always loved the shots you took of the Prada Marfa structure. I used to think of it as an American icon; what possesses people to deface things is simply beyond me.

Wakan Tankan Nici Un (Cherokee for "May the Great Spirit walk with you"). I will be thinking of you and yours as always, brother.
Actually, I think that was Sioux. :-D

be safe, and i am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with this time. will be a beautiful time of year to travel in west texas and new mexico. envious.... :)
Beautiful, moody essay. Your headline caught me: it is one of my mottos.
Though some very real sadness prevails, "happy trails" to you, dear, Barry. Have a safe and wonderful journey. There is no one who knows how to turn things around like you do. Look forward to the photos when you return.
Dammit. I'm so sad to hear about Marfa Prada. I always wanted to go there; be there.

Be safe; be well; be happy.
One of my friend's daughter is currently playing "Beauty" in Beauty and the Beast in San Francisco. She was just accepted to the NYU BFA program and we are all praying for a wonderful financial aid package for her. She told her mom that one night, at a part of the play when she was off stage, a three year old called out from the audience "Where's the Beauty?"

Where indeed! Safe travels my friend.
beauty right here, enjoying it :) Thanks Barry
Safe travels, friend. This song is lovely.
BBD, I love that Prada installation in Marfa...there is something so comforting about it...and that it was vandalized...makes it art in the real world...that is the very nature of the land in which we live...it gives the piece and even more powerful symbolism...with the graffiti on it...it speaks of class wars and the disenfranchised...which is not to say I think defacing art as it is created is art. It is simply this particular work is installed in a unique way leaving it somewhat open to approach. xox
Hope your travels have many joy filled moments
Will look forward to hearing about your travels.

Already miss you Barry...travel safe
I just went back and soaked in your original post about the Prada store in Marfa. Really? Prada? That's very surreal. I'm sad to hear that someone would vandalize the installation. I hope you have a peaceful, safe journey. And post back when you're home!
I so enjoy the tales of and photographs from your travels, Barry. It makes me sad to read of the untimely demise of the Prada Marfa sculpture. I remember reading with fascination your original post on it.
