Obama Extends the Patriot Act and America yawns

Rate: 27 Flag

The truth

Yesterday Obama signed a one year extension of the Patriot Act into law.   Provisions of the Patriot Act were due to expire today.  Obama had a chance to do the right thing.  All he had to do was not sign, but that is not what happened.

It is no big surprise that he picked an off night in the news cycle to betray the American people, yet again.

The Patriot Act embodies much of the worst of the last administration's excesses with the Constitution.  Where is the outcry?

What will it take for people to realize Obama is just as bad as Bush?

When will people stop supporting him because he is a Democrat?  The first black president?  Supposedly better than the alternative?  The lesser of two evils?

How long will it take before some sheep shows up in the comment thread and tells me to be patient because Obama can't fix things quickly?

When will people wake up?

Here is a link to the AP article if you don't believe the sainted Obama could have done such a thing:  Obama signs one-year extension of Patriot Act

And to show this is truly a flip flop of betrayal read Obama's own words from a speech he gave in 2005:

"This is legislation [The Patriot Act] that puts our own Justice Department above the law…When National Security Letters are issued, they allow federal agents to conduct any search on any American, no matter how extensive or wide-ranging, without ever going before a judge to prove that the search is necessary. They simply need sign-off from a local FBI official. That’s all."

…And if someone wants to know why their own government has decided to go on a fishing expedition through every personal record or private document – through library books they’ve read and phone calls they’ve made – this legislation gives people no rights to appeal the need for such a search in a court of law.

No judge will hear their plea, no jury will hear their case. This is just plain wrong."

Something else Obama will be signing soon:

Kucinich Opposes Intelligence Authorization Act: “... U.S. citizens are added to the list simply for being suspected of involvement in terrorism, in subversion of their basic constitutional rights to due process of law...U.S. citizens accused of involvement in terrorism are not even afforded the same rights that Guantanamo detainees are – if they are added to the targeted assassination list, their punishment is murder."  Obama is already murdering US citizens without a trial.  This will just make it "official."

I sure hope Obama does a better job with his "Targeted Assassination list" than what has been done with the No Fly list.

Obama fails the character test

I know the result of my howling and opposing this pernicious act from the day it was made public, no one gives a damn. Don't tell me that if AI have nothing to hide that it doesn't matter, because freedom and the rights of citizens as detailed by the constitution are the only thing that we've ever had. Not one single thing is made better or more positive by the "patriot act". Everything that it accomplishes could be done without it in a legal fashion. All it does is make it possible for innocent people to be placed in a defensive position instead of forcing the police and like agencies to do their jobs under the law. It changes the very nature of the law by turning us all into guilty until proven innocent and removes the very guarantee's we have been granted to be secure in our lives, homes, and property without due process. Acts deliberately written to skirt these promises are specifically banned and noted as unconstitutional.
BBE, I agree. This fucking Patriot Act is nothing but something to by-pass the constitution and protect the phone companies from being prosecuted for allowing the government to spy on it's citizens. Same as the first, just as worse!
Okay, BBE, I am now listening. I hate the Neo-Cons with all my being and if they assume control again, fucking watch out. There will be planes over Iran before all the sheep can baa.. I fell for Obama big time; I don't know where to go or who to support. What the fuck..
I'm still waiting for the promised change.

I would love to be wrong about Obama, but it hasn't happened yet.

In many ways he is worse. Would we have put up with a Targeted Assassination list of American citizens from Bush?

Not likely.
Be careful, it seems to be either U.S. or them

good post

Ben Franklin was right: anyone who would give away their liberty for security will have neither.
CrazeCzar the Good German speaks.

We should be so lucky if the government actually limited itself to genuine national security issues and "essential" services.
The Patriot Act is just another tool, although a very effective one, that can be used to support and enforce the Sedition Laws and the Anti-Sedition Laws. Since all of those were specifically designed with those who participate in the exercising of their Rights to Freedom of Speech and Press in this country in mind, because those are the ones that can help shape "Public Opinion"; then that places everyone here at the top of the political food chain.

Not yawns. Cringes.
But my hatred of the Christian/Conservative wrong/right remains
unparalleled.
Obama would have pull something really shitty
other than maintaining the status quo
to rival that.
How shitty does it have to get?

Bush didn't have a declared policy of indefinite preventive detention like Obama does. Depriving people of due process is pretty shitty, isn't it?

Targeted Assassination lists of American citizens isn't shitty? This is essentially murdering US citizens for alleged crimes with no trial.

A 20 times increase in missile attacks from drones across the Pakistani border with 10 of 12 attacks last January failing to hit their targets and instead killing 123 civilians. The 2 attacks that were successful killed only 3 alleged Al-Queda leaders. Murdering 123 people to kill 3 is pretty shitty.

Your excuse is thin.
Two causes for celebration: First, Obama signed the bill. Second, the extreme left portion of his base is angry about it, further lessening Obama's dwindling popularity.
The sad part is things could have been different. One of the true heroes of Congress whom you quote should have been our President.
Trust GordonO to put it all in perspective.

Kucinich would be an excellent president, but he is too principled and the public too shallow for him to be elected.
BBE:

It is a shame that some folks do not follow "politics", especially because "politics" directly affects every man, woman, and child in this Nation on a moment to moment basis. And for one to simply ask why "..shouldn't the President listen to the American People through their intermediaries, the elected officials in the House on some issues", without qualifying that statement by its' obvious answer, which is that a huge segment of the American People are quickly growing to distrust anything in the way of actions that their "..official intermediaries.." are attempting to put forth, especially when such actions are detrimental to the Health, Safety, and Welfare of this Nation and it "Citizens".

And, on top of that, then to simply expect for those same people to simply "..move on.." and thereby stop exercising their' inherent right to participate in discussions that affect their "personal well-being", is a little perplexing in itself.

In fact, that in and of itself, is a little "S_ _ _ _ _ _", but then again what else could be expected from some folks?

Respectfully Submitted,

BBE--again, I go back to lessons learned via the Bush/Gore fiasco. The argument that both parties are the same is disproved. It can (and usually will) always get worse.
You nail it, Tar-Paper Shacks, but the thing about CrazeCzar's comments is he makes many of my points for me.
They've (the Obomb 'Em admin) probably been the ones telling Cheney to comment on everything that Obomb 'Em is doing (relating to terrorism)... Then they can renew things that Bush was doing and say they are not weak.

The Constitution? I think the Constitution is just invoked to attack the other side (of course 'liberals' during Bush were criticizing him on the Constitution now you see snakes like Glenn Beck criticizing Obama ostensibly on Constitutional grounds)... No one really cares about it, and they violate it without a moment's hesitation.
BBE --Did you think the act will extend to Brasil?
Are you planning to relocate?
No, I was wanting to turn in one of your fans here for being unpatriotic.
but you have to admit, Sarah Palin absolutely rocks the Bumpit!
Kept one thing in mind- If "Dennis the Menace" speaks out, it is always overreaching. The truth is stretched to near fracture. On the Dem side, he is one guy who I rarely believe without independent confirmation.
This details my biggest disappointment yet with the Obama administration.

Rated and Facebook'd.
Brazil is has its pluses. Glen Greenwald lives there too.

As far as Kucinich and the Targeted Assassination Lists go, Obama's Director of National Intelligence confirmed their existence on national TV. I linked it in update 34 in the How Does All That Hope and Change Taste Now? Compendium. There are three or four linked articles about it starting with the January 27 update.

Stats on the peopled murdered by Obama's January drone attacks are linked in update 37.
I saw your post on this the other day and was called away before I could comment. I bookmarked it to come back to though - I swear. Anyway, it's sad that I didn't know this. I need to be more diligent in seeking out things that affect us all. This goes way past my patience level to an unfathomable place. Although I'm not really sure why I'm surprised anymore. Thanks for bringing it here and staying on top of what is really important.
The Patriot Act is vile. I certainly won't try to argue that Obama and the Dems will ever get rid of it. But there was no chance that the Patriot Act would not be extended during an election year. The "soft on terrorism" campaign rhetoric guaranteed renewal. Doesn't matter how many more missiles have been launched.
I have been writing for more than a year that he is a Siamese twin to Bush connected at the place where the soul is usually present in others. The Patriot Act disabled 9 of the ten articles of the Bill of Rights. I wrote several articles here and elsewhere that I did not believe he would knock it or The Military Commissions Act of 2006 down. I would have much preferred Spitzer, Edwardsor even Al Sharpton as President. Obama, as I said even during the campaign though I voted for him over McCain, is Bilderberg and taking $750 million from the big corps, is in this for the same reasons as Tony Blair, Money, and celebrity. I predicted in 2002 that Blair was bribed by a job offer to join Carlisle Group and Obama will do a similar thing and live off the celebrity of being "First Black President" instead of being remembered as the Second FDR.
here are two of the many exposing his hypocrisy :

If only we had an enemy that was bigger than apathy
Our president's a pop star with an education. Nothing more.
They all poop the same way in the White House.
I don't agree that he is "just as bad as Bush", but that's not saying much. He should not have done it. I don't blame the public for the lack of outrage so much as the media for failing to give Obama's signature the exposure it deserves. I appreciate the fact that you have brought this to light for readers on OS.
I am not surprised and yet I am outraged. I printed the whole act out the first go round of passing and sit it on my coffee table.
I could get no one to even read it.

Most have not read it and have only a vague idea of what it contains.
You do a yeoman's work BBE.
I am thinking Belize....
Kick ass, BBE. Monkey-fingered
