The Gulf Time Bomb - 27,000 Abandoned Wells

Rate: 13 Flag

Just when you thought the news from the Gulf couldn't get any worse...

 From two sources:

More than 27,000 abandoned oil and gas wells lurk beneath the Gulf of Mexico: No one — not industry, not government — is checking to see if they are leaking. BP alone has abandoned about 600 wells.  (google)

and

BP 'environmental minefield': Investigation finds BP was responsible for 600 of more than 27,000 abandoned wells in the Gulf of Mexico. (Guardian)

Icing on the cake:

BP capturing 1/500th the oil it promised: Officials and environmental groups call a misleading numbers game that has led to widespread confusion about the extent of the spill and the progress of the recovery  (WaPo)

and a little levity:

BP: Our oil hit Texas beaches yesterday.  (Twitter)

 In other news:

Wikileaks leaker of Collateral urder video PFC Bradly Manning facing 52 years.  Perhaps Manning should have tortured people or criminally eavesdropped on Americans as he leaked these documents; then he could have availed himself of that sweet Presidential protective shield. (Salon - Greenwald)

and

The First Amendment is Dead and the Obama administration killed it for BP. Journalists looking at 40k fine and class "d" felony charges for filming/photographing within 65 ft:

and

We are invading Costa Rica.  Seriously.  The Costa Rican government has given the US permission to launch an invasion of up to 7,000 Marines, ostensibly to “fight drugs.”  Just like how you or I would give a mugger with a gun "permission" to take our wallets.   (anti-war.com)

The three richest men in the world have more money than the poorest 48 countries. (CommonDreams.org)

and

The Obama Administration is keeping Blackwater armed and dangerous in Afghanistan. "...the company remains a central part of President Obama's Afghanistan war. Now, Blackwater's role is expanding."  (The Nation)

Oh shit and more shit. Soon we will be swimming in our own shit. Thanks for the update. It is damn scary and makes one feel absolutely powerless.
Not powerless. We vote everyday with the choices we make concerning the food we buy, how many miles we drive vs. walk/bike/mass transit, the gas station we fill at, etc.

The simplest way to force change is to be a more informed consumer. It will make you powerful and lessen the fear.
And...

To expose myself as a complete sci/fi geek:

* I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

o Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear.

More practically - proof of consumer power:

BP gas station owners are switching brands as customers boycott: "It's either change or go out of business"
"Not powerless. We vote everyday with the choices we make concerning the food we buy, how many miles we drive vs. walk/bike/mass transit, the gas station we fill at, etc."

Yep, I am incredibly powerful, it's up to me who I will gift my power to. I shudder at the thought I might pay them top dollar to murder me, and murder my daughters too.

Thanks for the links and the simple effective solutions.
Thanks for the links, truly.
Not just links... you get my biting biting take on the content as well.

News aggregation is hard work. Thankfully reddit has lightened my load considerably these days.
ooof. but glad to get my ooof here.
Lots of good stuff here BBE. Keep up the good work.
I think that the first thing to do should be to stop the wars.

But what can be done?

In Afghanistan? How can they recruit people for that war? Who are the soldiers who are going there?
liked your comment on fear and your response to AWS. thx for the compilation here for those of us tht lost Reddit pwds or dont access webnews that often.
We have got to get away from our dependence on oil. Every developed nation has an energy policy except ours. Every president since Richard Nixon has talked about establishing a sensible energy policy. Every Congress and presidential administration has failed to do so. Tragic.
