The Ground Zero Mosque? It is past time 2 nut up or shut up!

Rate: 22 Flag

gop

Our craven politicians need to read the Constitution and adhere to the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights.  It is a founding principle of our country and it is cheapened every time an elected representative denies the Cordoba Institute their right to build where they wish to build.

Ben Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are spinning in their graves wondering who the weak ass cowards are living in their land and how their leaders have become such lily livered craven snakes.

What ever happened to "Give me liberty or give me death?"

Rolling over on the Bill of Rights makes our leaders worse surrender monkeys than the Vichy.

In fairness, we've been building 'ground zeros' near Iraqi mosques since March 2003.  (twitter.com)

and

"Because of their track record of killing Americans, I can't support the construction of a Ground Zero McDonald's." (twitter.com)

and

"Because 4,196 Americans were killed in traffic accidents in 2001, I cannot support the building of roads or driving of cars near Ground Zero" (twitter.com)

and

As New York City's indigenous Lanape Natives died at Ground Zero by the thousands when overrun by Christian colonists, shouldn't we ban Christian churches from their sacred ground?

and

If you're going to complain about a Mosque being built near Ground Zero, you need to also complain about a Catholic Church being built near an elementary school.

and

Think you're pissed about a Islamic cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero? Imagine how about the Japanese feel about a U.S. military base 20 miles from Hiroshima.

Ultimately, this "controversy" is all about racism, religious bigotry and flagrant disregard of the Constitution.  Those muslims need to stand strong and build their community center.

Mosque gets all the press, but area near Ground Zero full of bars, porn, liquor stores, salons... urban blight.

Ground Zero Mosque protesters surround and attack two men speaking Arabic. Police have to rescue them. Turns out they weren't Muslims but were Arab Christians protesting with them. No racism here:

(From page two of the article)

At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.

"Go home," several shouted from the crowd.

"Get out," others shouted.

In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called "The Way." Both said they had come to protest the mosque.

"I'm a Christian," Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.

But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.

"I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here," a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

The incident underscores how contentious — and, perhaps, how irrational — the debate over the mosque has become.

A mosque, for instance, has been located since 1983 on West Broadway, about 12 blocks from Ground Zero. After the 9/11 attacks, the mosque's imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, began shaping plans to build an Islamic cultural center closer to Ground Zero as part of an attempt to build cultural ties between Islam and America.

Called Cordoba House, the center would rise 13 stories and would include a 500-seat auditorium, a swimming pool and a mosque.

Late last month, after New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a variety of political leaders announced their support for the project, the lower Manhattan community board voted 29-1, with 10 abstentions, to approve Cordoba House.

But there is still one hurdle left. Because plans call for extensive renovations to the former Burlington Coat Factory building, the center needs approval from the Landmark Preservation Commission.

That approval could come as early as July. But no matter what is decided, it will do little to soothe many hurt feelings — especially those of 9/11 victims' relatives.

This country was built on the idea of freedom of religion.
I guess some people want to forget that or think it only applies to their religion of choice.
I say build it anywhere. The right wing nuts can go find something better than this to scream about. Like the good gov't wanting access to all our electronic communication records without a vote. Much more important..... Good post BBE. Glad to see ya around these parts...
With all the trouble this world is in and the problems we face, this is front page news. This is headline news on the TV channels. Everything one side does, the other makes it a new item. This wiped the other big story off the news. Obama went swimming with his daughter. God help us all!
Since Israel's Mossad are the prime suspect in the controlled demolition of the WTC, I find it offensive that every US burg with population of over 5,000 and/or more than two stop lights has a "Holocaust Museum"...

Muslims had nothing to do with 9/11. Israel did.
Good post BBE. This whole issue is a distraction used by the GOP and right-wing media to reprise the fear campaign that worked for them so well under Bush. I hadn't heard the rationale for opening the mosque there and it sounds like it's something we need - understanding and peaceful co-existence.
I love America for its religious freedom. I have Muslim friends and co-workers. I don't believe any one religion is right - or wrong. But as a 9/11 survivor (I was living about a block from the World Trade Center, and had to leave my ash-cloud engulfed home for a few weeks - of course, this is nothing compared to so many others who didn't have it so lucky), I think it's a bit ridiculous to put a mosque - even if it's not a sect known for extremist or Al-Quaida ties - right beside where those two towers fell and all of our lives changed. I think of the neighbors and loved ones I know who lost people dear to them during this accident. I think of the fumes I and so many friends and neighbors (and our pets) inhaled, and the fact that I still get letters from the World Trade Center Health Association (if this isn't the correct name it's because whenever I see such an envelope, I throw it away, too afraid to think anymore about it). And all of this weighs even on me, liberal, open-minded, cosmopolitan, expatriot me, and I just don't feel like there should be a mosque there. I'm sorry. I do think that a center for religious tolerance, where all religions could come together (apparently a feature the proposed WTC mosque claims it will offer to a certain degree), yes. But such a place - or any religious structure under the Muslim faith alone, has no place near the World Trade Center. Even I am surprised by my intolerance, but try living through that day and losing people, and then see how tolerant you'd be.
Fuck the constitution and the idea of separation of state and religion. Your god is my god and you have no say but to take it up the arse and I better see a smile on the other side.

Thanks for this timely post. Yeah let's have the meth houses right next door to our elementary schools. That is okay for our country.
So so so tired of defending our Constitutional rights to a bunch of bigoted morons. The sad thing is that this is distracting us from what's really happening: the rich getting richer at our expense.
Salzburg is one of those bigots that is so stereotypical in his or her bigotry that initially reading her comment you have to wonder if it is satire.

Muslim friends?

Really? Sort of like having black friends or gay friends?

You are such a douche.

Telling muslims they cannot build their mosque on land they own because of your tender sensibilities regarding a false flag op ten years ago is like telling black people they can only ride in the back of the bus.

I am the least tolerant person I know regarding religion. If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people. Imaginary sky wizards are for the weak, the uneducated and the people who refuse to examine the world rationally. Science - it works, bitches.

But our Constitution protects the half baked beliefs of weak people and I prefer the constitution over the bigotry of people like Salzburg.

Salzburg wants to wipe her ass with the Bill of Rights.

No thanks.

Keep your corn pone shit stains off the Constitution. It is much easier to read without them and Salzburg obviously needs to immerse herself in it repeatedly until the first amendment sinks the fuck in.

Unless of course her comment was sarcasm.

In which case, carry on.
You forgot to add to that list, "building a pentecostal church near an abortion clinic." Or does that kind of terrorism not count?

Bigotry, an American tradition since 1492.
I defend this just like the Neo-Nazi march through Skokie.
Wow, I'm glad my name is "SalzbErg" and not SalzbUrg" - I'd hate to be that moron you're talking about! And yes, I do indeed have Muslim friends. I felt it was necessary to explain that. Your article made me think, because it made me feel the conflict that I've felt ever since the whole idea of building a mosque near the World Trade Center started. In posting, I expected to participate and voice another, yet non-fanatical view. I am not a Right-wing nut, I am not a liar - and, being someone who's left my country for one I prefer, I'm not even a patriot. That's why this whole idea is so troubling and intriguing to me, and, I imagine, to many educated people of all religions, political leanings, ethincities, etc. But seeing that what you were looking for was merely a bandwagon response, I"m sorry I sullied your dear blog, and you don't have to worry - I won't do it again. While you're getting off calling people douches and championing freedom, try not to forget about another one of those genuinely great constitutional rights, freedom of expression.
You show your ignorance of the constitution yet again - Salznut.

There is no "freedom of expression" [speech] in private space.

Where the fuck did you go to school and why did you sleep through government class?

Here. I'll help you out.

The text of the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Note that I am not Congress. Think that through to the obvious conclusion regarding freedom on this blog. I have the freedom to delete/censor your sorry ass whenever I feel like it, but have I?

Regardless of my not being Congress, I have in no way restricted your freedom of speech on this blog. I have allowed you to show off your vapid ignorance of the documents that founded the US of A and your vast bigotry. My pointing out what a dumb fuck you are in no way restricts your ability to respond.

Feel free to continue showing your ass to the world.

I won't stop you.

Hopefully you don't have plans to reproduce.
I really related to your explaining to a commenter that we as individuals aren't under the same standards as government. We can if we wish say or support any view on any subject and be totally american in doing so. That is freedom of expression. I'm glad to see someone carrying on for truth, j, and Amway.
(R)ated because the Amnbien is kicking in.
No matter what the outcome of this case will be, almost every politician who has gotten involved has managed to disgrace himself/herself. And those who choose not to get involved are exposed as cowards.

Nice work.
I wish I were you instead of me.

I said build it but don't be nuts or surprised if people get pissed. I learned that people freak out even when you suggest a middle way. So what is the fucking point of trying to understand people? You are more right than me.

It is definitely time to nut up AND shut up.
Thanks. Now if only we could force-feed these comments to the people who are actually flying off the handle...but of course, they're not thinking but rather reacting. So very ugly...
US base 20 miles from Hiroshima?!
o.
but 2 blocks isn't equal to 20 miles...
anyway, at least, in the US, no one is demolishing a hundred year old mosque or any thing to build a temple / house of worship...
Alysa says: ". . . try living through that day and losing people, and then see how tolerant you'd be."

Now multiply that day by thousands "and see how tolerant you'd be":

Since WWII america has found justification to militarily intervene in the affairs of Iran (four times), Yugoslavia, Uruguay, Greece, Germany, China, the Philippines (three times), Puerto Rico, Korea, Vietnam, Guatemala (twice), Egypt, Lebanon (twice), Iraq (three times and ongoing), China, Panama (twice), Vietnam, Cuba (twice), Panama, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Cambodia (twice), Chile, Angola, Oman, Laos, Libya (three times)), El Salvador, Nicaragua, Grenada, Honduras, Bolivia, Liberia (twice), Saudi Arabia, Somalia (twice), Yugoslavia (twice), Bosnia, Haiti (twice), Zaire, Albania, Sudan, Afghanistan (three times and ongoing), Yemen (three times), Macedonia, Colombia, Liberia, Pakistan, and Syria.

Furthermore: If I recall correctly, the last two unequivocal triumphs for our "vaunted" military were Panama, where we blasted heavy metal music to get Noriega to leave the Vatican diplomatic mission in Panama City.

"Then came the Army's clownish boom-box bombardment - American soldiers drawn up at the Vatican embassy in Panama, playing rock music full blast around the clock to make life hellish for the Pope's emissaries.

Suddenly we seemed to be in Dr. Strangelove country. Punishing the Vatican with heavy-metal rock?"

The operation was dubbed "Just Cause," and the General Assembly of the UN voted 75-20 labeling the invasion a flagrant violation of international law.

The just cause for this invasion was that Noriega who had been on the CIA payroll was no longer cooperating in hiding the program by which guns were sent to various Central American death squads in return for cocaine being trans-shipped into inner-city america, and this illegal american activity had to be covered regardless of the circumstances necessary to do so.

The prior american victory was in Grenada, a country of 100,000 people, (with a democratically elected government) two days after a bomb in Lebanon at the marine barracks took the lives of 241 american servicemen.

The UN voted 122 to 9 that the invasion was a flagrant violation of international law.

The operation was named Urgent Fury, and the urgency was to get the 241 service members killed two days earlier due to another inept american intelligence failure off the front pages, so we could return to the reagenian "morning in america."

Never underestimate the ignorance or willingnessof the american people to believe in fairy tales.

The more we discriminate against disliked minority groups, the more likely will we be discriminated against and persecuted when we run afoul of the powers that be. Every un-Democratic act sets a precedent and makes us more authoritarian. We must resist these hypocrites who race-bait and spread the seeds of bias every chance we get.
