The FCC proposed a National Digital Literacy Corps at the Digital Inclusion Summit at the Newseum in Washington D.C. yesterday to help bridge the digital divide as part of a national broadband plan due out March 17. The Digital Literacy Corps, modeled after volunteer programs such as AmeriCorps, will target communities with low broadband penetration including rural areas, low-income housing developments and tribal lands.
This is great and exciting news. I don't think most Americans understand the threat posed by the ever increasing gap in the world of digital know-how. This is an issues that affects us all, regardless of our personal comfort levels with technology. Being left behind in our brave new digital world poses a serious threat not just to our economy, but also to our security, democracy, and overall freedom.
I really hope this comes through and that the media generates the necessary excitement for the public to support and engage in this initiative.
