10 Drummers Who Sing Well

Rate: 14 Flag

This list came about when my friend Madge (see, Peg, I told you I wouldn't use your real name!) said that there aren't many drummers who sing well. So I spent precious hours last week doing music video "research" instead of working and making money so my friend could see the light.

So here goes, Madge:

1. Phil Collins - Yeah, yeah. I know. He wrote some profoundly crappy tunes. Unfortunately, his career seems overshadowed by them now. But Phil Collins is a ridiculously proficient musician in addition to being a powerful performer. (And don't go there about Peter Gabriel - apples and oranges.)

If you think Phil Collins is a lightweight, watch the last minute of this video.

Well, like Don Henley, I can sing from behind the drums, but it just   looks so shitty. That's why you don't get many singing drummers now.   And I never wanted to be a singer. When Peter left Genesis   and we couldn't find another singer, I drew the short straw. So, in many   ways, my career happened by accident. I just wanted to be a drummer. -  Phil Collins

2. Andy Sturmer, Jellyfish

(Not the best quality video, but shows off Sturmer's skills well.)

Some of you may not be familiar with the 90's band Jellyfish. If so, go out and buy their work, essential for any decent music collection. Jellyfish composed lush little power pop symphonies that are candy to the ears. Andy Sturmer, lead singer and drummer, was extra cool because he stood while playing drums.

Here's some cleaner audio of Jellyfish.

Check this out on Chirbit

3. Don Henley, The Eagles

The Eagles get a bad rap sometimes and I'm never sure why. There's even an "I Hate the Eagles" Facebook page. They're considered too cookie cutter or bland, I suppose. But they have some of the tightest harmonies in rock and Don Henley's voice, to me, is very comforting and familiar, like old jeans.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Stan Lynch, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Stan was a little younger than us. But he was a very good  drummer and he  was really conscientious, and he worked really hard.  And he sang as  well. He sang harmony. He was a powerhouse onstage. He was so powerful I used to say he had this fifth gear that  he  could go into and just really make everything explode
- Tom Petty

5. Levon Helm (The Band, etc.)

Some consider Levon Helm a national treasure. He could easily make my list of "Musicians who Didn't Suck as they got Older."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Karen Carpenter, The Carpenters

Most people don't know that Karen Carpenter was an accomplished drummer, placing first in Playboy's reader poll for Best Rock Drummer of 1975.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Peter Rivera, Rare Earth

What a gem of a video, right?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Kelly Keagy, Night Ranger

Kelly Keagy was a last-minute addition, but the more I watched him, the more I realized how he rightfully belongs on this list.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. Sheila E

Watch her go off at 1:20.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Don Brewer, Grand Funk Railroad

Saving my best unearthed video for last. This is good old fashioned rock.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, now you'll remind me of several key drummer/singers that I missed. Musicians such as:

Dave Grohl. (He didn't drum and sing together all that often.)
Ringo? (He doesn't sing all that well, really.)
Mickey Dolenz from The Monkees? (Nice voice, not much of a drummer.)

I'll stand corrected if you mention:

Buddy Miles

Peter Criss, Kiss

Roger Taylor, Queen

Jimmy Marinos, The Romantics

Meg White, White Stripes

Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine

Dave Clark, Dave Clark Five

Moulty Moulton, The Barbarians

Fred LeBlanc, Cowboy Mouth

Good job! Even though number 1 was quite painful.
When I saw your title, the first names I thought of were Levon Helm and Dave Grohl. I'm sure the research was fun.
Enjoying the silliness; I nominate Marvin Gaye - I believe he was a session drummer in the early days of Motown.
Phil Collins with the munchkin hairdo? One of these days, maybe, I'll quit hatin' on Phil.
Fun list though Beth Mann..
Jack White plays drums and sings some for the Dead Weather - I saw them live and they absolutely blew me away. Then again, anything Jack does pretty much blows me away.....
Sheila E and glad you added Karen C.
rated with hugs
Levonnnnnnnnn. Good acting chops, too.
for god's sake - the Dave Clark 5 - cuz I'm feelin glad all over!
Noah, YES. Good one. Will add to the bottom of the blog. Shoot. Where were you last night?

The Pixies, Harry...did not know the drummer sang? Will check that out.

Interesting to hear about Marvin Gaye, Damon.

Linda, hopefully you saw the Sheila E video...I really enjoyed it. She's ultra cool.

Matt, damn straight re: Levon. I forgot (until yesterday) that he was the father in Coal Miner's Daughter. Such an interesting guy.
Keith Moon is credited with "vocals" in Quadrophenia. They're not good vocals. Apparently the band would usually forbid Keith to get close to a mic during recording.
Fred LeBlanc, Cowboy Mouth

The immortal Moulty of Moulty & the Barbarians. A true inspiration. The complete drummer-singer, except for his being one-handed.
Thanks! Some good suggestions. Didn't know much about The Barbarians or Cowboy Mouth.

Look at you, Joisey...hanging out with a cultural icon (I meant Levon not the working girl...though she may have been one too.)
Noah, added Dave Clark to the list with link to video.

Stim, yes...Keith Moon couldn't carry a note to save his life....one of my fave drummers though.
I really can't take issue with your list Beth. Glad to see Levon Helm up there. Phil Collins was a very underrated drummer with Genesis. Just check out his work on the instrumental sections of Cinema Show or Supper's Ready. And while he was no Gabriel, he was pretty decent on Trick of the Tail, their first post-Gabriel area and in concert on their older standards like The Musical Box. He seems to get hit with a huge penalty for his cheesier 80s hits.
Grant Hart of Husker Du sang some of their songs, but I preferred Bob Mould's voice. Keith Moon sang the song Bell Boy on Quadrophenia with an exaggerated (I hope!) accent, but I always hit skip on that one to get to Doctor Jimmy. Ben Folds also plays drums, though I don't remember seeing him sing while drumming.
Great list!
wonderful list, I love having all this talent on one page

Dave Grohl, Meg White and Peter Criss were alll on the tip of my tongue until you cut it off.
Great work - you put so much time into these posts and i stand back and applaud.
Plus it's 3 in the morning and I'm gonna blast Sister Christian - thanks for that (you - me - karoke = someday soon)
Ok _ I think Night Ranger gave him a little vocal part so he would stop being a pissed off drummer. Wheras Peter Criss actually wrote and sang "Beth", which is I believe the only top ten Kiss has achieved.
I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing and because it's the middle of the night.
aim, thanks for dropping by. its the middle of the night for me as well...ah, insomnia. gotta love it!
peter chriss didn't play and sing at the same time. i'm looking for drummers who sang whilst drumming.

and really, kelly keagy is considered quite the powerhouse. he wasn't given tunes to appease him; he was a driving force in the band. i'd venture to say that he was the strongest instrumentalist and vocalist in night ranger. but what do i know? i'm sleep deprived!
“Sister Christian” was named one of the “Top Drum Tracks of the 1980s” in a recent Modern Drummer article
Surprised no one mentioned Jimmy Marinos from The Romantics who definitely sang and flailed away with wild abandon simultaneously.

Great post.
