Texas Tech's Mike Leach. Where to start? I could start with the hairstyle that even Vince Gill, the originator, gave up several years ago. I could start with the insane pirate thing he came up with, or the "fat little girlfriends" comment.
But all that is quirky and harmless. But it's this new stuff that has everyone up in a tizzy, and has me aching to point out the heart of the matter:
Mike Leach is a bad example to his players, and other players on other college teams.
It's not just that he allegedly pooh-poohed medical advice and sought to humiliate Adam James, although Leach says he was doing him a favor. Putting him in a dark shed/electrical closet/media room/Hanoi Hilton/luxury suite/outhouse/hen house/dog house may have been his way of keeping him out of the sun he said he needed to avoid as part of his treatment for a slight concussion, but that wasn't how he and his family perceived it.
And that is the point where Leach, as a coach, should be checking his ego. After all, isn't that what teamwork is about? Last I checked, a coach is part of the team as well. If this is still the case, a whole lot of this could've been mitigated by a simple apology.
Leach says that the school wouldn't tell you who complained. How many athletes get sent to solitary when they are injured, Leach? He couldn't maybe remember on your own that he sent Craig James' kid to the hole one time when he came to practice with sunglasses on and complaining of a concussion? Were there that many that he's just a blur in a long line?
So let's say we give Leach the benefit of the doubt, though, and say maybe he couldn't remember which one of his players had a concussion this season and was sent to a dark shed/electrical closet/media room/Hanoi Hilton/luxury suite/outhouse/hen house/dog house. He had no clue who it was, so he couldn't apologize directly.
That still doesn't mean he couldn't say, "Please tell the family I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, and find out if there's some way we can work this out."
Instead, he lawyers up and has the guy give the media a tour of the dark shed/electrical closet/media room/Hanoi Hilton/luxury suite/outhouse/hen house/dog house, and then proceed to slander the student athlete who levied the complaint to begin with.
Maybe Craig James is a helicopter parent. Maybe Adam James just isn't that good, and is inconsequential to the program in the grand scheme of things.
But none of that really matters. What matters is that Leach began looking out for himself, and not his team. Some might argue that by fighting to coach the Alamo Bowl game, he is looking out for his team. Maybe so.
But it also sends a message to his players. Suspensions can be circumvented. Punishment and apologies are for people who can't figure out how to throw someone under the bus and move on. If someone tells you that you're suspended for your actions, don't man up - lawyer up. You'll be back on the field by morning.
Football - from the NFL right down to the high school level - has been a case study in medical negligence when it comes to head trauma. It took a lot of time and convincing to make the NFL take concussions seriously, and that's hopefully trickling down to the collegiate level. Even just two concussions in a short span of time can do grievous harm, possibly even death.
So this was Leach's opportunity to do something good. He could've easily said to the family, "I'm sorry there was this misunderstanding about the injury. When I did what I did, I thought I was helping. Why don't we work together to promote some awareness of concussions and what coaches SHOULD do in response to one?"
That would've been a response that would have made all of this a non-story. It would have been a story with a productive ending.
But instead, we have a mess. And ultimately, Tech's program will suffer the most. If Leach stays, there will always be those parents that steer their kids to other schools, other programs, because they're unsure of the well being of their child. That seed of doubt has been planted.
If he goes, the program loses the one coach who can make that quirky Lubbock situation work and draw decent talent over to that corner of the world, and then coax out offensive wonderment.
And all because being a Leach means never having to say you're sorry.
Update: Local Texas sources are now reporting that Texas Tech fired Mike Leach this morning.
YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Dallas ABC affilate WFAA verified that this video, shot by Adam James, is real. What do you think?

-- oh hey-- there I am on the fave bar!! Thanks!!!
...this matter has devolved from a dispute between employer and contracted employee to Coach Leach vs. la famille James in a pissing match royale. I have linked to the TRO Motion and the video of Craig James pleading his case on ESPN.com. There is no dearth of contempt between James and Leach. The TRO motion mentions that James has political ambitions, implying that this whole "Incident at Lubbock" is a cheap ploy to get attention for his political career. I think it's gonna backfire on James if indeed that was his intent. I find the whole thing very little league.
If the news reports of Leach's firing are true, it appears the University got the message from the TRO Motion, the gist of which is that the action of suspension is outside what them fancy lawyers call the " 4 corners rule", which means that such action is not in the [Leach's] contract. As the TROM says- the Univ. can only fine, terminate, or reprimand per the contract. The contract is attached as an exhib to the motion-- man, there are some big numbers in there!!!
Love your report, disagree with you totally. The Big 12 (i'm a UT fan- man are they got get trounced by Bama-- who got to see Leach in person this season) needs a guy like Leach. I love him. He takes so-so talent every year, puts them in a wild offensive scheme and has much success. Plus, the guy has the third highest graduation rate among major football programs-- and he's a lawyer who surfs. He's a mad genius!! Wherever he goes, I'll root for his team when they aren't playing the orange cows.
However, that said, if the accusations become fact, there's a good chance my opinion of coach pirate can go 180.
Again, I hope the rumors of the firing or untrue and the court rules for Leach.
Yours in caffeination!!!! Joe
My big problem with this is that people I know (in W TX) think Leach probably DID treat the player roughly, but they are OK with it. It''s that "football is war" and "anything goes if we win" attitude that I HATE, and I think Beth captured that flavor. To me, sports hazing is worse than frat hazing 'cause it's done by adult leaders- players are people's children, entrusted to a school supposedly to get educated, and should be treated responsibilty by the adults in charge. Even if that means you don't win as much...

What class, they handed over the termination letter to Ted Ligett -Leach's lawyer-- as the two parties showed up for the TRO hearing in Lubbock. The hearing became moot. The Texas Atty General was defending Tech. I wonder how much just showing up to deliver a letter cost the Texas taxpayers. This is not a surprise because 1) the whole gist of the TRO was breach of contract for violating "4 corners" and 2) it saves Tech $800K bonus due Leach as of tomorrow. I hope Leach sues with impunity. If nothing else I would like the facts to be established rather than just have accusations floating out there. Thanks again for getting this on the front page, though I cannot condone your assumption of the allegations as fact. Rock!!
Please read again. I'm saying that this was Leach's opportunity - whether the situation was as dire as Craig James said or not - to do something positive. He could've used this as a way to ask the NCAA for clear cut guidelines on dealing with head injuries - as the NFL is working toward. Regardless of the size of the shed/equipment room/whatever, a true teammate (and a coach counts as a teammate) would've at least attempted to address the complaint, not the complainant. Instead, he allowed his lawyer and assorted coaches and players make some pretty harsh accusations themselves regarding Adam James.
You can't discount the allegations against Leach and in the same breath take the allegations against Adam James as gospel.
But to ignore the basic good practices like water, treatment of head injuries, etc., is foolhardy. His is a lesson to all coaches to take player health a lot more seriously.
Givin the Love to the Texans, yassuh!
From ESPN.com:
"Even with the firing, Leach will be considered one of Tech’s top football coaches ever, leaving the school with a program he helped boost into contention in the extremely difficult Big 12 South Division. It’s not a stretch to say that he was one of the seminal figures in Big 12 history, helping transform the way offense was played from the ground-based philosophies of the old Southwest and Big Eight conferences into today’s high-powered aerial attacks that have become the national rage recently. "

This is going to be a very ugly battle ahead.
Cheers.. WHAT!! Sherrington has now denounced the firing!.. Gotta read that..http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/123109dnsposherrington.2cf78a00.html
I mean, WTF is THIS:
"the dark shed/electrical closet/media room/Hanoi Hilton/luxury suite/outhouse/hen house/dog house"??!!
I finally figured out it was a story about the TTU v. Leach story.
Well, I've been a sports fan for many many years and KNOW that there are always multi sides to every story.
For starters, I WILL say that I believe Leach to be an imperious asshole.
Hey, it IS texass so, he fits right in in this area.
Now let me get to what I want to say:
Those of us who have been around also know that C James is more of a never was than a has been.
If someone wanted to, they could find former teammates of C James who will tell you that he was not the best of "team" players.
So, what we have here is a failure to communicate reality.
The apple fell DIRECTLY next to the tree in this case of the son, A James being like the father in certain ways.
The child is NOT a capable football player, nor is the child a "team" player.
I've talked with several people who are closer to this than I could be.
Their common opinion is that this was bullshit MADE to stew in a crockpot with the recipe "invented" by the Jameses in cooperation with the Gerald Myers regime.
And, ON MY OWN, I find the whispering of the little mans in the "oh so terrible shed" to be absolutely suspicious.
He OBVIOULSY was NOT in there alone so, WTF IS going on here??
Here is a link to what is more descriptive of TTU/James' stance than any words could convey~~~~
TTU/JAMES/MYERS STORY
For complaints about wordiness, I am very glad you kept your comment so very brief.
ANYWAY-- why was I originally here- oh yeah.. Stayed up late reading everything Leach. Had a weird dream about UT getting pummeled by Bama at a game in Memorial Stadium. It was 22-0 at halftime. But the upshot of the dream was that UT announced the firing of Greg Davis at halftime and the hiring of Mike Leach as offensive coordinator!!!! I don't know if that changed the outcome of the game, but I awoke very happy..
For the record, I find Adam Leach's video curious. No time date stamp, nothing to identify the room as even being on the Tech campus. It's hardly proof of anything without at least one of those things.
Hpw have you been?
I haven't seen you here since last year.
And, it's nice to see you checked out the post in my "briefs".
Happy new year.
I sincerely believe that Leach and the university administration became bitter enemies last year during contract negotiations. I'm surprised that no one else has honed in on this. Leach out-smarted and out-played the U and came out with a fantastic contract. More than they wanted to give up.
I am guessing that this "Adam" thing came along at just the right time for the U to make a preemptive strike on Leach. Since he wasn't coaching yesterday, they didn't have to pay the $800,000 contract bonus that they signed up for. THEN, on the other hand, what is $800k to the U, you say? Not much..but tempers and winning is a big part of what makes up the football program (ask the Kansas coach..however, I'm not comparing Leach to him...) at most universities.
You gotta have that competitive edge that sometimes turns into temper and you got to win. College football may appear to be complicated to some but it shouldn't be.
The video? Who the heck was whispering about turning the lights on so he could get a "better look" at it? Something like that. That sounds suspect as all get out to me.
I saw the tour that Mr. Liggett gave a reporter who flew into Lubbock and did notice that the rooms were almost bigger than my little house. So, the electrical closet story is fascinating to me.
Let's wait and see what comes out in court. We might find the truth then.
Happy New Year! (transplanted Sooner living in Texas)
I do believe you busted right into reality and truth.
The MISadministration is FULL OF SHIT.
Is this part of the "Me, Me, Me" generation at "work"?
He has a heck of a lawsuit to get going against TTU. And if I were him, I'd sue Craig James and ESPN.
I actually wore myself down to a nub this weekend, reading and commenting. It finally became too much and I watched Dallas beat the Eagles. I won't start on MV here as it would be inappropriate.
I still like Coach Leach and the more I've researched the James family...something stinks in Dallas!
