Bio
I, like millions of others, am a refugee from some fairly gruesome childhood happenings. I entered adulthood as a selectively mute, unwashed, suicidal, friendless, uneducated, delusional, and sick-fat (as opposed to healthy-fat) young woman. I have been homeless in the Tenderloin (I am prouder of that than I am of my master's degree), and I have spent years in self-imposed solitary confinement. No more. I have morphed over the years into an irritatingly chipper and hyper-friendly Trauma Queen. If you're having a bad day, don't even look at me; my happy little face will just piss you off. This blog is dedicated to all the other Trauma Queens and Kings out there - we of the shrunken hippocampus and the hair-trigger amygdala. We who, in D.H. Lawrence's words, have "passed through the waters of oblivion." But let's not just pass through. Let's make a TSUNAMI...

Fusun Bares It All: And It's Beautiful

Rate: 24 Flag

I first read Fusun Atalay's memoir, Will Of My Own, about two months ago. It is a book I have continued to revisit, because one reading is not enough. The book is many stories woven into one, because Fusun has lived many lives in one.

Her story takes us on a journey across oceans and cultures and phases of life.

Born in Turkey, Fusun was the first child of  an erratic woman with a painful secret. Her relationship with her mother (a life-long wrestling match between love and hate) runs like an undercurrent throughout the book, and often tugs on Fusun like an undertow.

Luckily, there is music and poetry, too, in the form of Fusun's tender, strong, intelligent father, Babacim.

I have joked with Fusun that I am in love with Babacim, and that I plan on travelling to Turkey to find my next husband. Actually, reading about Babacim  has helped to heal  my Amercian-made bigotry toward Islamic men.

I have learned from Will Of My Own. And in many more ways than one.

From Turkey, to Holland, to Montreal; through love affairs, marriages and motherhood; from acts of deep kindness, to acts of devastating betrayal, Will Of My Own is uniquely fascinating and universally heart-breaking.

This memoir is no superficial skimming of life events. It reads with the naked depth of a diary, and there is courage on every page.

If you want to be inspired, angered, touched, and swept away on a journey that will reveal to you as much about yourself as about its brave and tender protagonist (she really is her father's daughter) then read Will Of My Own by Fusun Atalay. This book will change you. And you will be drawn back to move through its silken layers many times.

Okay, the site is blocked by the friggin filter at work, but I'm ordering this book when I get home! I read the excerpt, I can't wait to read the rest.
Bravo! Bravo! I'm off to get my reading in right now because the posts Fusun offered gave me a taste of something I wanted to return to - something delicious. Thank you for standing up and giving the recognition that is needed when one of our own actually achieves what so many talk about wanting. A hip-hip-hurrah for Will Of My Own and Fusan Atalay!
What a wonderful review. I have Fusun's book next to my bed. You are right_ it is inspiring. _r
I'm going to try to read this now and see if it's transcribeable into screenplay format, cause it sounds like it would make an excellent movie!
i can't wait to go get this and read it!
I have not read it yet, but if Fusun wrote it, it has to be great. She is my friend, my teacher, and my idol on OS. She is one fascinating woman!
Great Post!
I came over here because I thought the title of the post meant cheesecake photos!
I love Fusun's writing and I will read her book. She's one of the best things about OS.
And you, Trauma Queen, should write a book too. Your story is fascinating.
thanks for the heads up, going to go get one right now, love a good memoir.
Great choice of author, BFTQ, especially coming from a fine writer like you. I always believed the Fusun's writing is unique in its magic.

I can't wait to get it, thank you for this, BFTQ.

and hey :D
What a wonderful soul you are to write this.
You make a great book reviewer! How encouraging and and supportive of Funsun. Thanks for passing this on. Love your statement that the book will reveal as much about its brave protagonist as well as myself! Now THAT's a book I want to read -- about myself of course! (Shouldn't give that egoism away here. Gulp.) And more of us should stop the suffering caused by contempt prior to investigation -- re Islam and Islamic anybody. Great write!
I love to order any book written by an OSer and I am building a nice collection. Good for Fusun and what a great support you are.
I am definitely going to check it out. Thanks for sharing the info.
