Perpetuating the Culture of Poverty one Paycheck at a Time

Rate: 3 Flag

I work at a check cashing place.  Over the summer, teenagers' mothers brought them into the store to cash their first ever check.  To give you perspective, these kids rarely earned more than $100 a week, and the fee to a cash a check is 3%.

Each time, I'd tell the kid about free checking accounts for students, available at PNC (four blocks away.)  They would nod gravely, and then the parents chimed in.

"He wants his money now."

"We don't do banks."

Not one working teenager told me that they wouldn't open a bank account, but every parent discouraged it.  Without a checking account, you must purchase money orders whenever you need a check, and pay bills in cash, incurring an extra fee each time.   To live without a checking account, you must be extremely organized or flat broke.

Seeing adults struggle from their lack, then force their children into the same position is the most difficult part of my job.

It's sad when bad habits are passed from one generation to the next...you did the best you could, offering a smarter option.
Thank you. I didn't want the parents to feel that I knew what was best for their kids (I kinda think I do) so I couldn't be as persuasive as I'd wanted.
There's another dynamic at work though - the bank can "tie up" your cash - you're not liquid. And if your life feels precarious . . . you gotta be able to make spontaneous choices about where the cash goes - car repair or utility bill? What if there's an emergency on the weekend? I try to be fairly responsible. But I've been in the situation where I needed cash, right now, and couldn't get to it because it's after hours at the bank.

But here's the thing. You're doing your part, trying to put the information out there. And it's worth a shot.
I understand the need for 'cash on hand' but it seems wiser to take $300 out of the bank on a day and keep it for an unforeseen disaster. Most debit cards will allow up to a $200 withdrawal, and surely $500 is enough to cover a medium disasters

None of the above is meant as a criticism of you. I just wish check cashing placing didn't have to exist.
Nah - I'm with you on this. I wish they didn't exist either . . . it's just part of the predatory system, but it's still better than loan sharks.
