A Pedestrian's Lament

Rate: 4 Flag

I don't drive.  I have walked in many states, in three countries, and all over, I've found the same problem: People don't use their turn signals.  At least fifty times I've started across an intersection, only to have a driver start to turn, flip on their turn signals, and flip me off for daring to cross the street legally.  I've almost been hit countless times, and it always involves the lack of signaling.  In my defense, I am the best, safest walker I can be: I don't cross against lights, I look for turn signals, I avoid speeders and weavers, I hit the walk button and then wait.  Really, I'm a saint on shoe leather.

Now, forgive me for being Captain Obvious, BUT TURN SIGNALS ONLY WORK IF YOU USE THEM BEFORE YOU TURN!  Not in the middle of the turn, not after the turn, before the turn.  If the turn signal doesn't work, hang an arm out the window.  Believe it or not, not every pedestrian is litigious and money hungry, most of us would prefer not to be hit than to be hit and sue the pants off you.

Have you, bad driver, ever what would happen if you struck and killed a pedestrian?  Life long guilt, expensive legal fees, the shame of having committed manslaughter and everyone knowing what you did.  These deaths occur constantly,  and although sometimes pedestrians are in the wrong, the driver is in charge of a ton of metal.  With great power comes great responsibility, and I wish more drivers would accept this fact.

Finally, why the disrespect to pedestrians?  (All most been hit countless times, routinely called faggot and rude gestures for legally crossing the street.)  Is it because I can't afford a car, and am therefore unimportant?   Is it because your time is much more valuable than mine, and you can tell, because if it was important I'd be driving? Or is every person who runs light and disregards signaling rushing a dying person to the hospital?

"With great power comes great responsibility." So true, so true.
Drivers think they own the road. If you live in a warm weather state that is a vacation home part of the year for snowbirds, you double the chance of being killed crossing the street. I used to walk and ride my bike on public roads. Not any more. I stay within the confines of my community -- and even there, I have to have eyes in back of my head and second guess drivers. One good thing, when you are a walker and then get in your car, you tend to be more aware of the danger to pedestrians.
