I Definitively Define Feminist

Rate: 5 Flag

Feminism is constantly dissected, and it changes all most hourly.  At Jezebel, the commenters seem to redefine feminism daily.  As a woman who considers herself a feminist, I've devised certain criteria for feminists:

1. Belief in equal work for equal pay.

2. The belief that although men and women are biologically different, those biological differences are not a hindrance to life, careers, and pursuit of friends, love and happiness.

3. A woman can do anything and remain a feminist as long as it is her choice.

4. The belief that neither sex and or gender is inherently superior.

5. Feminism is not the exclusive property of women, and women need as many male feminists on their side as possible.

I think coolness is also required.
Just saying.
Good criteria, and I agree. I would also say " belief that neither gender is inherently inferior. Both genders have strengths, weaknesses and advantages. We balance each other out well, when we allow ourselves to do so. But I think Nick is right about coolness.

Add a sense of humor, too. =o)
Being cool and having a sense of humor help, but I'm your quiet type feminist. I don't shave my legs or pits, but I don't talk about it in real (non virtual) life.
#5: The fiance regularly reminds me that I cannot own my feminism, as he is also feminist. In the pits of my self-hatred for being a "whore" (this was before we were dating) he was the first person to tell that a woman cannot be a whore. His reason for this was rooted in a song by Protest the Hero called Turn Soonest to the Sea. I highly recommend checking it out.
You radical, you! Yes, we do need men on our side, and thankfully, many have stepped up to stand shoulder to shoulder with us.
