Breaking News: Ft. Hood Under Attack from 3 "shooters".

Rate: 23 Flag

                      fr1079

There are reports this afternoon that there are one or more shooters at a PX (Post Exchange) at Fort Hood, Texas. Ft. Hood is reportedly the largest military base in the world with 50,000 military personnel and 9,000 civilians stationed on the base.  KCEN-TV in Killeen Texas is reporting that there are 12 dead and 31, (43 total shooting victims) wounded so far.  The Shooters are wearing military uniforms, but have not been identified as members of the military.  There is speculation at this time that it may be a Ft. Dix type incident that succeeded, or possibly a PTSD incident.  Given the fact that there are 3 shooters, the likelihood that it is a mental health/PTSD issue is less likely.

Fort Hood is on “lockdown”.  One gunman is reportedly in custody, and the third gunman is reportedly firing on S.W.A.T. teams that have been deployed.

*** As of 4:32 eastern, the warning sirens have started again.  There are reports of gunfire again in one of the neighborhoods on post.

*** As of 4:50 eastern there are reports that the suspect in custody is an Army Major.

A Major is the bottom rank of the "field grade" officers.  Field grade officers include Majors, Lt. Colonels, and Colonels.  A Major would be designated as an O-4 with a golden oak leaf cluster on the uniform.  Major is a position of some experience, usually a career member of the military.  Officers can ascend to O-2 Lieutenant , or O-3 Captain on the initial contract, but not usually O-4.  It is noteworthy that it would be a Major if that report is accurate.

***As of 5:05 eastern, President Obama calls it a "horrific outburst of violence."

*** As of 5:28 eastern, Malik Nidal Hasan is the name of the Major in custody.  Hasan is a 39 year old Major in the U.S. Army.

***As of 5:37 Maj. Malik Nidal Hasan is reported to have been killed at the scene.

***As of 9:15 eastern, Gen. Bob Cone, Commanding General of Ft. Hood has reported that Maj. Hasan is alive an recuperating.  Maj. Hasan was shot but not killed at the scene.

The story is unfolding. No one really knows yet.
Whoa. Turning on CNN now - thanks for the info Bill.
Whatever the hell is behind it, it's terrible.
What the hell is right.
Thanks. Alerting my friends right now...
Very sad. Here's hoping the victims and families get the support they need.
oh, man. supposedly before some sort of graduation ceremony?
I am hearing something about a 40 year old male at the House Theater. This was to be the site of some graduation ceremony.

Now they are adding that the captured shooter is an Army Major with "an Arabic sounding name".
Oh God. "An Arabic sounding name." Have they confirmed that? or is this more speculation? I ask because Oklahoma City was supposedly committed by Muslims until they caught McVeigh.
They have the Major in custody. What one considers an "Arabic sounding name" cant really be qualified. I can say I hope that it is not a reason for this incident to spiral off in an ugly direction, but it is obviously already a tragedy. Whether the shooter is of middle eastern descent or not, we can say that the actions are his, and not of the entire ethnicity.
More casualties - more casualties.
Bill,
I totally agree. I was just afraid that that was the kind of wild rumor, reported by the press, that would cause some kind of immediate retaliation in neighborhoods. Now, MSNBC is speculating that it's due to PTSD. Clearly, everyone is making shit up to fill air time.
The scene is horrific. I feel for the families...
Aside from the obvious disturbing nature of this incident, this has very ominous elements. The fact that one of the shooters was an O-4 is very disturbing. The fact that it was during a graduation ceremony is very disturbing. This is reportedly a processing center which gets soldiers ready to deploy. If this is meant to slow or stop a deployment, that is a huge security/national defense consideration. Troop movement, and deployments are very special aspects of military operation security. If a Major(O-4) wants to compromise Op-sec, that is disturbing.
Zuma, you're a vet. Imagine an O-4 doing this. Holy Cats!
Three military officers with hand guns shoot 43 people? Man, they must have been carrying two guns each. Horrific.
Are there 3 OFFICERS responsible? If it was done by 3 commissioned officers, expect the FBI to be busy coming thru the entire officer corps of all branches for the next several years. I can't wrap my head around 3 officers doing this.
I just heard the news on the radio in Argentina, and I entered OS to find out what was going on...
I am listening to CNN as I type this and what is known is that there was ONE shooter who was killed and there are two other men in custody. 12 dead and 31 injured.

They SAID that the one shooter used two handguns. He had to be an expert to make that many kills in so short a time with two handguns only.
Thank goodness 2 of them were captured alive. The incident is most unusual, and we will need to get information from them.

Malik Nadal Hasan is the name being reported as the Army Major.
Malik Nadal Hasan. Age 39 or 40. They say he is one of the shooters. MSNBC.
The profilers are baffled. I'm saddened. ~R~
But wait - how could this happen at an Army base when the gun nuts keep telling us that if everyone carried guns, these types of shooters would be killed almost instantly - before they could kill a lot of people!?!?

So much for that theory.
A Major? I am floored.
I'm seeing what info I can get from my friend...also an Army Major (soon to be Lt. Colonel).
A military community on a base within the states is a special situation. Personnel are less likely to be armed than at any random place on the outside. And the fact that it was a Major is like a shooting at a school but the shooter being a teacher or a principal. Obviously this will turn out to be even more strange given the current state of affairs domestically, in the theaters of war overseas, and the reported ethnicity of the shooter, Maj. Hasan.
Bill, apparently there are two other shooters in custody. A true Fifth Columnist terrorist attack?
From the AP:

" A law enforcement official says a shooting suspect at Fort Hood has been identified as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan...
"...[I]nvestigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point in his life."

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/top/all/6705789.html

I give it to the count of 10 before fear-inspired backlash aimed at Arab-Americans begins on that base and elsewhere.
Speculation is swinging wildly. Matthews is reporting on MSNBC that Hasan was the only shooter. I think Matthews is wrong. If over 40 people were shot with handguns, there had to be more than one shooter. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson is reporting that the Maj. was due to deploy to Iraq, and had made it known that he did not want to go. She has refused to confirm his name, choosing to allow the Army to do that, but I dont think there is any doubt at this point as to who the Major was.
Ed Schultz of MSNBC is reporting that Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan was a "mental health professional." I take that to mean that Maj. Hasan was some sort of a counselor. I suppose it can't get more tragic, but it sure seems to be getting more strange.
A psychiatrist. Licensed in Virginia. Bizarre.
Deborah, I cringe at the backlash.
Bill, it's starting to sound like he acted alone more and more too. They may have two in custody, but that doesn't mean they shot.
Stella, I am stunned. I feel on the verge of tears and nausea. I hate this.
Reportedly Maj. Hasan received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech. Maj. Hasan's specialty was psychiatry with special regard to traumatic stress.

These two facts focus special attention on an incident like this due to the obvious, and the recent tragic history at Virginia Tech. What is in the mind of an individual with these tiles in his personal mosaic? Did Maj. Hasan suffer sympathetically from his treatment of others? Is this a concern for other psychiatrists? Is it political?
very sad indeed.........very sad.
We used to worry about open carry at teabag parties. Now this. I was in the Army for 29 years and the only time I had a loaded weapon was on the rifle range. This guy had to use is personal weapons or have access to the arms room. Even then the bolts to the weapons are usually stored in a seperate place. I thought only MP had loaded weapons. We will soon know how this happened.
They have reported that he did this with civilian weapons.
I've been listening to this all afternoon. Maybe now people will start to believe that PTSD is a real condition. I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. So much still unknown about this. It's so very sad for the families. So senseless.
HEADLINE: May 12, 2009

"A veteran US sergeant was today charged with murdering five fellow soldiers at a forces stress clinic in Iraq.

The shootings yesterday were the deadliest case of soldier-on-soldier violence since the Iraq war began in 2003 and drew attention to the issue of combat stress and frequent deployments to battle zones. "

It remains the same sad song...
Wow. A psychiatrist of all people. A specialist in the field of PTSD kills random people???????????? WT holy F! I get suicide. I wouldn't do it, but I get it. But like the man who hit me head on intentionally to kill himself, WHY take innocent people with you? And he took an oath as a doctor to save lives...
I truly do believe this is the classic lone gunman syndrome. There may be someone who he told he was going to do it that they are questioning, but this isn't terrorism or some shit like the right would love to spin, considering he has a Jordanian name. He was born in America for God's sake. Or was he birthers???????!!!!!!!!
It's truly sad Bill and as I wrote in my piece from November that I just reposted, PTSD is going to reach epidemic levels from these wars and from stop/loss.
Speaking of epidemics; consider that he may have developed PTSD from treating soldiers, and dealing with that. And also from keeping it from his family. Supposedly he had not told his family that he was scheduled to deploy to Iraq soon. They had no idea.

Are there other mental health professional, or even other health professionals being over stressed by the stress being placed on our whole system? This appears to be a ripple effect which has traveled beyond the front line soldier.
The unfortunate Fort Hood incident cannot be used as support for an attack on the NRA and the second amendment. The right to bear arms means nothing unless it implies the right to use those arms. The Fort Hood shooter was simply expressing his personal beliefs, in other words exercising his right to free speech. The incident would have evolved very differently if every soldier were required to be fully armed at all times with semiautomatic weapons.
Free speech has limits. Those limits are far below crimes, and in this case murder. I know you are trying to be provocative, but this discussion wont go there with this incident on this blog. The event was not "free speech", and anyone who knows the difference knows that.
Whiskey Tango Fox, indeed.

What happens when you subject people to more stress than they can handle for far. far too long?

Nobody knows until it happens, but sadly, it can take a horrific form.
The shooter is ALIVE! That's great news. Now we can learn from him, and then shoot him.
This, like concussions in the NFL, is not a real problem. Just an isolated incident. Guess what? War does this to people. r
So I just read that he'd supposedly posted a couple of things about how Muslim Extremists were in many ways like soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to keep it from killing their buddies. Using that logic, he may have thought by killing the guys preparing to leave, he'd be saving them from the trauma of war.
He is a coward and a traitor. Try him then hang him...in public.
I read about this earlier on yahoo. Very tragic and horrible. It is sad to loose our soldiers overseas, but horrifying to loose them on a military base, on American Soil.
Thank you for this post and the information.
He's alive, but since this is a military case I'm guessing we won't hear a lot of details.
"Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues." (CNN's update 11/5/09 5:22pm)

Fasten your seatbelts, people. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.
Think there'll be a shred of truth to anything reported on this matter? 100% spin, 0% facts.
Aside from the story itself, I appreciate your temperate responses here. I fear many more of these stories await, whether they be realted to miliatry or not, with PTSD among the myriad reasons. If the talking heads could only approach the same with the caution you have here we would all benefit.
thanks for all the updates.

sad.
It is mind boggling, D.C.
