Doing the Same Thing

Rate: 1 Flag

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Based on this definition, we are ruled by crazy people.
The Republican's psychosis is obvious: after an eight-year test of a vast transfer of wealth from the many of us in the middle & lower classes to the few very comfortable and outright rich, accompanied by almost no regulation of industry, resulting in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the Grand Old Party wants to return to power on the same policy prescriptions.

But what about our president? Despite a year of evidence with the Dems accomplishing next to nothing in the face of disciplined party-line voting by the Rs, Obama continues to entertain the diseased notion of bipartisanship.

If the Dems had gone for universal, single-payer health care from the beginning (a position that polled very favorably for months-until Obama bizarrely let his BP (bipartisanship) love trump sanity) and, if they were willing to use every parlimentary manuever available to them, we would have long ago joined civilization.

This is true for every semi-progressive piece of legislation proposed. But, BP love made Obama placate the Blue Dogs while trashing the Progressive Caucus; it made him think that Max Baucus and his Gang of Six would bring the Rs onboard; it prevented him from ripping the Rs and the Conservadems new bodily orifices; and BP love is still his desire and his goto method.

To me, there are three possible interpretations: 1) he's truly delusional, 2) he has the political savvy of a rock, or 3) he's lying through his teeth about everything.

Those of you who have read my other, less-than-favorable evaluations of Obama, will think I'm unequivocally for #3. But, I don't know what the hell is going on with President Hope N. Change.

Certainly, his political savvy comes in third in a race with the Rs. On the other hand, I'd think that a sane person would have figured out the complete nonsense of BP when dealing with the crazy people across the aisle. Finally, lying through his teeth is quick & easy, and makes coherent sense with all the evidence Obushma has given us since he started running for president (1980, if I'm not mistaken).

So, oh OSers, what do you think?

Replay is the way. Rated. Of the choices you offer, #3 jives with my perception. Behind this, I think both Bush and Obama have been poorly served by their inner circle. Both Presidents have surrounded themselves with ideologues and professional politicians who have been grossly out of touch with the American people. The comedy or psychosis continues...
I don't think it's poor advice, Max. I think it's poor politics and a poor value system.
I've always felt it was a waste of time to try to get inside the head of any president. So to me your multiple choice — crazy, stupid, or mendacious — doesn't have much explanatory power. Unfortunately, I think we're seeing something that was pretty predictable. A guy who never showed real attachment to any particular reform, whose singular quality was that he never stayed in any office long enough to use the office to achieve anything, whose presidential campaign was begun on the basis of one well-received feel-good speech at the '04 convention about how post-racist America is … is now doing about what he can be expected to do — steer the ship of state according to the echo chamber consensus of elite Washington interest group politics.
Joaquin,

While I agree with you on mind-reading, I was interested in how other people are reacting to what is(n't) happening.

Bill
Well, in that case, I'll share: Even given my very low expectations, Year One was a real dud. Former constitutional law prof continues 4/5 of Bush's unconstitutional human rights violations. Guy whose campaign introduced America to "public option" says it's just one option, and he doesn't care if it's in the final bill, later adding that he's open to any proposals (cept single payer). The guy packs the cabinet with conservative business Democrats, but like Clinton, hangs other nominees out to dry when Rs in the Senate drag things out. The latest: He's not even willing to make recess appointments! Point is, he's not willing to use the power of the office for any ends that Rs disagree with.
Could be mendacious or stupid, Joaquin.

I still haven't decided.
Anybody familiar with Obama's background and the people he surrounds himself with who still retains the delusion that he is any more than Bush with an intellectual surface coating really isn't looking.
I think that unfortunately he seems to be what was to be expected. An inexperienced guy with little connections and powers arranged into the office, which is in reality run behind him by nasty fellows who want to expand American Empire by more and more wars around the globe. More hard times will follow.
