So Long And Thanks For All The Fish

Rate: 28 Flag

I started posting on Open Salon on August 5, 2008.  It took me a while to find my sea legs here, as in the beginning there were a lot of political and newsy types of post.  I don’t do political and newsy posts, my forte has been poetry, fiction, photography and song parodies.  So for the first few months, I floundered a lot.  But I eventually found what it is I am compelled to write, so I stuck with it.  I never had a huge audience, but I did have one.  I felt like I was a writer.

Over the next year, Open Salon truly became open, and an influx of new members made it hard to keep up with everyone I was suddenly reading.  There were a great deal of excellent writers, photographers, and poets coming on board.  But my fear was that, with them, would come the casual bloggers, the diary writers, and the trolls.  I saw Open Salon as a place where people could stretch their wings, get feedback, become better writers and journalists.  I know that the editors saw it as a “social content site” where they could get some intriguing takes on everything from current events to entertainment and all for free.

The big draw in this place was always the “built-in audience” that Kerry keeps touting.  Thousands of readers at your fingertips, people!  A cover page to highlight the best!  The only problem?  The cover page is designed and maintained based on what OUTSIDE people want to see.  NOT what you and I, the insiders, think is great stuff.  WE DON’T COUNT, except as content generators.  I’m sorry to tell you, too, that because it is FREE and WE DON’T COUNT, we also don’t get the right to demand anything of the editors.  Plain and simple.

Me, personally - I’m fine with that.  This is a place where I have had an opportunity to work on my chosen craft, fiction writing and poetry.  I’ve gotten some great feedback from people, and I’ve had a few EP’s and cover spots over the course.  But The last year has been less and less fun for me, and it’s because this site is devolving, not evolving.  It is becoming Wordpress with a cover page, and frankly I don’t need that.  I had a wordpress blog, and if I’d have wanted to keep it I would have, I wanted a place that could afford me the ability to test my skills out, get meaningful feedback, and avoid all the bullshit that occurs in online forums.

This place has been described at times as high school, with its cliques and side groups and conspiracies.  It is actually more like an elementary school, with its playground armies and coatroom quorums.  So, since there are a whole slew of folks here that think it is ok to steal from others (and you KNOW who you are), that plagiarism is no big deal, that it is fine to gum up the works for the rest of us while they throw their pre-K tantrums and clog up the feed, I’ve decided to bow out.  I have enough stuff going on in real life that I don’t need the additional bullshit that is going on here, and since I am not paying for the service and I don’t really bring in a lot of eyeballs anyway, it’s time to go.  I apologize to my twelve or so constant readers, you’ve been a great help and source of encouragement and pleasure to me.  But I’m done now.

I’d like to briefly thank a small handful of people:
Barry (bbd) for inviting me here to start with.  I will always be grateful to you for that, brother.
Sandra Stephens, Lee (Boanerges1), Jim (jimmymac1025), Ann (1_Irritated_Mother), Janie (JK Brady), Candace (femme forte), Steph (O’stephanie), Sally Swift, Stellaa, Dennis Knight - your encouragement, your critiques, and your own writing were a tremendous gift to me.  I thank you sincerely.

There are many others, but I’m running out of time so I will offer a blanket thank you to anyone here who has ever read something I wrote and left me a comment (or a PM).  You made it worthwhile to post here.  If you’re in my “favorites” list it is because I enjoyed what you had to offer here.

To those who would say, “My use of other people’s photos or words is nobody else’s business”, you’re dead wrong.  It IS my business when your crimes affect me (and they do, they smear this place and tarnish every single person who tries to do the right thing).  If I had the time and the inclination, I’d go through every post you’ve ever made and track down the owners of the content you stole.  The terms of service here are very clear: you will not post anything you don’t have the rights to.  That is enough to cover the considerable ass of Open Salon should it ever come to criminal charges, but it WON’T cover yours.

I’m leaving you folks with two posts for now: this one, and the post I did on Basic Writing which covers how to actually FIND content on the internet that you CAN use and how to appropriately use it.  I doubt common thieves will bother; it is much easier for the spiritually bereft and intellectually lazy to just steal.  But hopefully it will help the rest of you.

I’ve turned off e-mail notifications, so please don’t bother PM’ing me with your latest post or your thoughts on my exit - my only activity here, until such time as I totally remove this account, will be to systematically delete whatever’s in the inbox without opening it.  I’d like to give those folks who have comments from me that they appreciated the opportunity to save those - when this account is eventually deleted, every comment I ever made, every PM I’ve ever sent you, will go with it - that’s how the software works, and I’m sorry for that.

As for this post, I’m not going to bother closing comments as I won’t be back to read them, so have at it, people.  The house lights are still on, the stage is cleared and the mike is open.

excuse my language, but goddamn it, there goes one of the very best of us and i can't even begin to say how sad this makes me. can't even begin.
Count me as sad. All the best to you, Bill. I enjoyed reading your writing and seeing your photos, and I always thought you were a prince of a guy.
I hate it when a writer of your caliber decides to leave this venue. OS is becoming more diluted and your presence and your craft will be missed.
Thanks for your friendship, encouragement and sharing your very special art both the writing and photography. Sorry you have made this decision. I urge you; no I beg you do NOT delete your account. Let it sit for a few weeks; what is the harm. I did a similar thing once and have always regretted it. I lost some of my favorite things. Let it sit. What is the harm? You can always delete later. Bless you, brother. I am very sad...
You already know how I feel, Bill, so I won't repeat myself. But I will repeat sweetfeet: "S**T".
Bill, I am very sorry to see you leave today! We have had some wonderful comments back and forth over the time you have been here. I will miss your wonderful photo essays and remember well the stories that readers would write the endings for. I hope you will reconsider and come back soon!
Sorry to see you go, Bill. You've always been a good friend to me, and a source of civility, professionalism and plain good humour during your time at OS. I am going to miss you.
Yeah, well I sadly, regrettably, been expecting this. I will miss you. Take good care of yourself.
this is unfortunate. OS is quite imperfect, but it sure is fun. I think it will be a little less fun with you gone. (and I only really just came to know you a little...) please reconsider.
Damn.
I will miss your encouragement, good humor, fairness, breathtaking photos and amazing ability to weave words into the perfect fabric that warms a heart.
I understand where you're coming from, and wish you the best of everything. You deserve it!
xoxoxo,
What can one say? I agree with Sparking etc.,
If you come back Editors may play rock, paper,
scissors,
and happy EP's picks pay for Tuna Fish Salad.
Ed. Larry/Joan, after all the day? same smile.
EP's are same-same as picking the Sunflower.
Sunflowers follow sunshine and smile bright.
Salon/OP editors are one odd sorta mystique.
okay, but that the way the cheeseburger sizzles.
Another one bites the dust. :(
Evey time I hear the Who song I will remember your Teenage Waistband, and God's Room and etc, etc.
Dammit. Just dammit. Not that I don't get it, just . . . I hate it.
Bill, all love and respect from me, myself and me. I can't help but feel guilty for being in the middle of the insurrection for the four hour feed this weekend. Just so you know, nothing that happens or doesn't happen, as far as the feed and who the ed's pick, and all the spam etc. matters to me. It's the people here that I love (most of 'em). I wish you wouldn't leave.
When I finally get back to new england, i'll make sure it includes a swing through your neighborhood. you're a good man bill, and I wish you only the best in life.
Durn it!!! Come back!! :( Ahh well, I understand, a lot of people are crusing out on that leaving ship, I won't but I understand the reasons for those who do.

Have a good life and remember, don't forget your towel and don't panic!!!! Adios and I will see you at the edge of the universe!!

**wanders off**
Bill,
You represent the very best this forum has offered. Your integrity, vulnerability, talent, forthrightness, and humanity have been an absolute delight to witness—not to mention to be a recipient of.

I am deeply saddened by your exit, but extremely grateful to have a friendship with you which extends beyond this site.

Your leaving represents yet another grievous consequence of those who primarily use this forum as a social networking site; commenting more upon one another and the site itself than seeking to consistently create art which those outside the forum could appreciate.

Many wonderfully talented writers no longer post here, and others post infrequently—being disheartened by the inbred and uncivil character that so often dominates the discussion.

Your absence will create a terrible vacuum Bill. I consider you to be one of the jewels of Open Salon. You have always offered your best and encouraged others in every way possible. I only wish that those who consistently offend would have followed your example rather than seeking to justify behaviors that are inexcusable and contrary to what is at the very heart of creativity.

I love you man. Blessing to you always my dear friend.
Your writing improved dramatically while you were here, so your time wasn't wasted. I think the poetry and pics were always very good. Your taent is unquestionably worth pursuing, wherever you chose do do so. All the best, pal.

Jim
Well gosh Bill, my increasingly infrequent stops around the OS are going to be just that much more infrequent. Thank you for the mention, I am very pleased to find myself in such stellar company. Please check for the PM from me that has my personal contact information so we can stay in touch, it would be too lonely of a thought to think I might not open my mail to find a missive from you now and again. You, my friend, are one of the about 15 reasons that I have stayed as long as I have. Keep writing - no matter what!!! And I guess I'll just have to come to Vermont next year for the Vermont 50 -it's a great state, and now I have a friend in it, so it's totally worth the aggravation of training for a 50 mile race, if hanging out with you is at the end of it. Best to you Bill.
There goes one of the kindest, classiest men I've ever known. :(
You are a fine and decent person, Bill, and it has been a privilege to know you here, and to enjoy your posts. Your comments on my work have been very helpful to me as I seek to both improve my writing and to convey the substance of my essays with both care and conviction. Thank you. God speed.

Monte
Ah phooey! There goes another wonderful writer and friend. This is so sad. Hurts my heart. Wish him nothing but the best of everything. He is lucky, though. He has Vermont!
This is some disheartening stuff.
I'm beyond bummed about this, Bill. You were always one of the good ones. You will be sorely missed, but I will respect your wishes. Best of luck in all you do.
AAAAAAHHH!
Man, you were a favorite favorite of mine. thanks for thanking me--I loved your stuff cause I loved the photos, I loved the birds, I loved your inventive mind and our forays into group writing.
As far as writing goes, babe, we had it all!
Farewell, my friend!
