Anatomy of a Pet project, Part 2

Rate: 4 Flag

Part of the challenge of creating a new online community is balancing the needs of the people you attract with your own needs and interests. Without putting words into his mouth, my cartoonist friend Jim loves to let his creative juices flow. But one of the underlying concepts of DrawtheDog is that our cartoons are inspired by real dogs, based on stories owners submit.

This quickly led us to two questions. The first is: what happens is you want to feature a dog that no one has submitted? The second is: what happens if you get a great idea, one that is unconnected to any submitted story?

In other words, can we give Jim the freedom to draw what he likes, without disappointing our audience? So far - fingers crossed - the answer seems to be yes.

The answer to the first question is shown above. We thought it would be fun to do a special cartoon on Election Day, and this is what Jim came up with.

I'm perplexed as to why no comments.... I'm just trying to bump the feed here. Hope you get more play.
You're a good man, Jeff. Much appreciated.
what a great idea. the site looks great! ...and yeah, what Jeff said.
your website is amazing. instant favorite. and yes, submissions should be a muse, not a dictator. keep up the fantastic work!
i love the surprise and delight as this cartoon emerges...trying to guess, what will it be? where is this going? keep up the amazing work. OS is a good forum for this type of creativity!
I think that if you DON'T let the creativity run, you're missing out on half the fun . . . besides, I suspect that your audience is happy to see each cartoon on its own merits. I know that I would be.
We have just begun to explore the possibilities of what Draw the Dog can become. It's not even three months old, and we're trying to let things evolve naturally...
Amazingly, incredibly cool. I'm entranced.
