The Country of Texas....What if Texas Really DID Secede?

Rate: 9 Flag

 america-less-texas green

Lots of people still talkin' about Secession, aren't they? Conversations, commentary and quasi-debates goin' on all over the place.

Seems to me that several states, 13 or so,  are trying to hold the  federal government hostage with their political posturing around the Tenth Amendment, don't you think?

Might happen in Vermont, to be sure, labeled as "New Secessionists" by some. Georgia might even take the plunge. Arizona has already seceded, in effect, but everybody always.. thinks.. that Texas will jump off first.

TRUTHS:

(1) This may be disheartening to some, but Secession from Texas is not going to happen. Ever. It makes for good press, lively debate and presents a fantastic array of possibilities, doan it?

(2) Bill White, a Democrat, is going to win the November 2010 Texas gubernatorial election and Ricky Perry and his nutcase buds will get the boot. Finally.

"In reality, we know that Texas is not going to secede, but I thought it’d be fun to look at some possible scenarios."

On the ONE hand:

What If Texas DID Secede? http://theelectoralmap.com/2009/04/23/what-if-texas-did-secede/

And on the Other:

Here ya' go, straight out of the mind of a Secessionist wannabe who happens to have more than a few of his facts mixed up or totally in error.

It came to me over a year ago via viral email from a staunch conservative, now Tea Partier.

THE COUNTRY of TEXAS

In case things get a little tough during the next
few months,Texans have a plan...

Maybe you don't know it, but Texas is the only state
with a legal right to secede from the Union . (Reference the
Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.)<<<<< Wrong. Texas won the right to split in to four different states withIN the Union, not the right to secede.

We'll probably have to take action since Barack Obama won the
election and is now the President of the U.S.A. <<<<< Here's the root of it all in case you missed it...

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. We will control
the space industry.

You won' t have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications.<<< <<<<< Uh... Not so much with the new space program outlined this month. Looks like Florida will hold those magical powers.

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

3. Defense Industry--we have over 65% of it. The term
"Don't mess with Texas," will take on a whole
new meaning. <<<<Why does the song "Dream a Little Dream with Me" keep rolling around in my head?

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of
Texas will need for the next 300 years. What will the other
states do? Gee, we don't know.

5. Natural Gas - again, we have all we need and it's
too bad about those Northern States.

6. Computer Industry - we lead the nation in producing
computer chips and communications equipment - small
companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS,
Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD,
Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Misconduct, Dallas
Semiconductor, Nortel, Alcatel, etc. Need a longer list?

7. Medical Care - We have the major centers for cancer
research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in
the world, not to mention the Heart Centers. The
Houston Medical Center alone employs over 65,000 people. If those crazy liberals decide to stay here, they can forget about that communist take-over of health care. They can get a job, pay for it, or die quicker.

8. Education: University of Texas, UTMB, Texas A&M, Texas
Tech, Texas Christian, Rice, SMU, University of Dallas,
University of Houston , Baylor, UNT (University of North
Texas ), Texas Women's University, et al. Ivy grows better
in the South anyway.

9. Work Force: Not restricted by a bunch of unions. Here in Texas,
we are a Right to Work State and, therefore, it's every
man and woman for themselves. We just go out and get the
job done. And if we don't like the way one company
operates, we get a job somewhere else.

10. Derivatives We don't really know what that is, but just in case this is it: We have essential control of the paper, plastics, and insurance industries, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion by the US, we have the Texas
National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, and several
military bases.

We can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If
the situation really gets bad, we can always call the
Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over the
Texas Rangers. <<<<<<<I wonder if he realizes that the military bases are...federal? Duh.

12.
Food Industry We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs,
and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables, and
let's not forget seafood from the Gulf. <<<<<Yeah, well. We've just seen what "Drill, Baby, Drill" is doing to the Gulf, haven't we?

13.
Population Three of the ten largest cities in the United
States, and twenty-three of the 100 largest cities in the
United States are located in Texas. <<<< I wonder how drastically this will change when the mass exodus starts?

And Texas also has more
land than California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Delaware, Hawaii , Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island,
and Vermont combined.

14.
Trade: Three of the ten largest ports in the United
States are located in Texas.<<<< What will happen to the free trade in, out and through Texas?

See NAFI Map below: The map's travel corridors show the desired routes of the new Super Highways as proposed by the North American Forum on Integration (NAFI) — a group of wealthy industrialists, academics, and politicians whose aim it is to break down barriers to the North American Union. The main actors in NAFI are members of the Council on Foreign Relations or related organizations based in Mexico and Canada.

Soon to be Ex-Governor Rick Perry wants to kill the transport routes and set up a series of Toll Roads.

15.
Automobile Industry We also manufacture cars down here, but we don't need to. You see, nothing rusts in Texas so our vehicles
stay beautiful and run well for decades.<<<<<Forget the not-rusting bit. Guess he's never taken one of his cars to Galveston?

These are just a few of the items that will keep the
Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing
out there that we need and don't have.<<<<< ::THUD::

Would that be considered Brawn or Bull?
Hmm, I live in Quebec, Canada. I'd like to think Quebec has somewhat equal weight like Texas as far as self-sufficiency goes. We have the French-English linguistic problem to make matters worse.

Very enlightening post, thank you. Rated.
TAKE THE AIR BASES AND FORT HOOD AND THIS TIME DO NOT INVITE THE BUMS BACK IN.
Interesting comparison to Quebec from the link, FusunA - However, I'm not so sure that the language spoken here is 'distinct from mainstream English' -- unlike the dual languages there.

The difference is that Texas has never declared English as the 'legal' language.

Quebec Model

At the same time that Texas is unique in America, it’s also part of the fabric of America in the same way that Quebec is a part of Canada. Texas has a language that is distinct from mainstream American English, but it still holds a prominent place in the U.S. lexicon.

Quebec went through its own secessionist movements and actually voted on the measure in 1995 (“No” won with 50.6%). Could Texas followe a similar path and take it to a vote? Well, turns about someone already polled Texans, with 75% saying they wished to stay.
Texas also has George W. Bush. My opinion -- shut the door on your way out.
Waal, texass does have the world's major supply of fertilizeer, er, bullshit.
It's great that then thar rodes don go though Wisconsinful whar ah live.
John, we all feel your pain. Trust me.

They'll never trust us again, will they? Future Presidential candidates need not apply.
"Waal, texass does have the world's major supply of fertilizeer, er, bullshit. It's great that then thar rodes don go though Wisconsinful whar ah live."

Yes, indeedy, it does, XJS. It's no wonder that the sender of that email left it open for interpretation.

You're going to have to work on that accent, though. Whar and thar ain't the correct pernunzeeayshuns 'round hyeah.

It's Thur...and Whir, tyvm. ;)
Oh BR, I wish I had your confidence that Perry will be booted out.
Know any teachers, Blue? Call a few of them (and they are a huge and varied voting block in this state) and see what they tell you.

I know of no one who wants the likes of little ricky for another term. None. Do you?

Have faith and be brave. Bill White's gonna take it. I'm sure of it.
Interesting post. Texas has a lot going on. I always wonder how people can discuss this treason with a straight face.
The Republic of Texas once petitioned the US government to become a part of the Union, and they refused. They obviously made a mistake. I don't know what it is about those 'baggers dreaming of running their own country. Texas is its own planet already.

We know that Texas has more than its share of gas, but I don't know which end of their bodies it comes from. I certainly feel sorry for you Blue, having to put up with yokels like Rick Perry and the 'bagger who bloviated about the country of Texasistan.
" I always wonder how people can discuss this treason with a straight face."

Same here, Dr. Spudman. Takes the hypocrisy to a whole 'nuther level, doesn't it?
"I certainly feel sorry for you Blue, having to put up with yokels like Rick Perry and the 'bagger who bloviated about the country of Texasistan."

Won't be long, onl -- won't be long ... until little ricky is outta here and some of this rhetoric will die down. I'm hoping.
Were Tejas to secede it would immediately be absorbed, er, re-acquired by Mexico ... the bold words would be no match for the Mexican Army & Drug Cartels, without US Military protection they'd be gone in 60 seconds ... back to the Mother Country!
Looks like a very interesting post. Looking forward to reading it soon (during my free time).
After all the hoopla on this topic, this came out today from the Texas Nationalist Movement. They can't even get their own party to support it....

REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP HAS SOLD OUT TEXAS, WON’T FIGHT TO DEFEND STATE SOVEREIGNTY

http://www.texasnationalist.com/info/tnm-news/288-republican-leadership-has-sold-out-texas-wont-fight-to-defend-state-sovereignty

“We went right down the list … nullification, sovereignty resolution, the suit against the healthcare bill … and in the end it was silence, no answer,” said Texas Nationalist Movement membership director Cary Wise, who attended the gathering with Abbott and the members of the Texas Conservative Coalition, a group of 49 state representatives and state senators. “From the people who are supposed to be on our side, nothing.”

Wise said the coalition of groups opposed to runaway federalism was told there would be no special session of the Legislature to enact a state-sovereignty resolution “because it could be used against us in the health-care suit… and because it would cost too much.

“Texas is in trouble, and we have no state leadership looking out for us,” Wise said.
Very good job. I actually really liked it. Obviously, it will never happened. You should send this to the Young Conservatives of Texas, especially the chapter at A&M.
Kanuk -- Thanks for having time to wade through this -- Feel free to share it, if you like. ;)
On the upside, this would open up the possiblity of invading Texas, at which point they would become an occupied nation. We could then rebuild them to be a thousand times better (ala Japan and the Marshall Plan) and then re-integrate them into the union stronger and minus a lot of guardsmen.
Sounds doable to me, Doug -- Just let me get outta here first!
