OS Weekly: Alysa Salzberg sets the scene for peace talks

Rate: 33 Flag

Yes my title is sensational, and totally meaningless. I will be producing this rag whenever I damn well please.

OS Buzz file~

Recently we've had a few famous flounces; nothing new around here but the departures sparked a flame war of over-blown proportions. I will refrain from naming names, but if you've been engaged you know exactly who I'm referring to. If not, you need to plug in more often. Anyhoo, I'm happy to report the OS climate has returned to a temperate norm--back to reading, not reading, posting, and commentary. From my lips...

Featured Blog of the Week~ Alysa Salzberg

a2

So how do we move on from the ugly? Often it's the meaningful meta posts where we gather to purge and pledge. One such post is my Blog of the Week. When Alysa Salzberg asked "Why are you here?" we responded to the tune of 142 comments at last count, including one by the elusive Larry Lauerman. Drawn by Alysa's winning persona and heartfelt sentiments, we flocked to her Paris flat like pigeons in the park.

But where did the dynamic diva called Alysa come from anyway. Well, I happen to be just the person to ask.

Now if you're at all familiar with Motown history you know there has been some dispute as to who discovered the inimitable, late Michael Jackson. Diana Ross claimed it was she who first presented the talented tyke to Berry Gordy or was it producer Suzanne De Passe? Who even knows anymore at this point and does it really matter?

Yes, it matters. I totally discovered Alysa Salzberg.

I wouldn't swear it on a stack, but if memory serves I made the discovery through Mark Trost. Now there's a blast from the past. Remember him? I admired his work and would sometimes follow him around to see who he was reading. One such sojourn led me to Alysa's place.

Right away I knew she was a find. Though honestly at first it was more about the novelty of her location. "Our girl in Paris" was the headline in my mind; a feather in our community cap. She just needed a little, uh, help.

Truth be told, when I found her the poor child was barely literate; loafing aimlessly around Paris, cursing at her freakishly talented boyfriend. It was going to take some work, but recognizing potential I generously committed myself to the nurturing of my little diamond in the rough. For example, I encouraged her to get out and really "eat" the city, to explore a Parisian haunt or two. Perhaps she might enhance her cultural awareness by visiting museums you know, that kind of thing. These were just suggestions of course. Hell, why not report on current events in Paris. Since she was there, duh. Eventually she began to get a clue, blossoming under my tutelage.

When she published her breakout piece, and my favorite to date, Eiffel Tower Games, I was hooked and moved to send out my first promotional PMs for a blog other than my own. Not to get all self-aggrandizey, but I introduced her to my people and voila, a star was born!

And now she has surpassed her accomplished mentor. Do I resent her for this...of course, not, but even if I did that would be envy not jealousy, a distinction which LintheSoutheast explicated nicely this week

But seriously, I'm not gonna lie in my own rag. It's true I have felt the sting of the green scorpion where Alysa's concerned. How big of me to feature her anyway.

Cheers my friend.

Who gave good comment?

larry Leepin Larry on Joanie's Commas and Question Marks.

"Every mm hmm is another $50.00."

What was Emily thinking?

joanie Joan H. and her poignant meditation on aging and punctuation should have graced the cover. It was just perfect, that's all.

In the News~

lea Lea Lane encountered the late Elizabeth Taylor not once but twice. Is it just me or has Lea been everywhere and met everyone?

Open Call~

linda Linda Seccaspina wanted to know "What's in your wallet?" Being the super-cool gal she is, links to all the responses can be found on her post.

My take~

When others wrote about the members they would miss, I didn't get it at first. How can you truly miss anyone (other than close friends) with the wealth of content from which to choose? Then I gave it some deeper thought, cause I'm deep like that, and realized I do miss someone: Catherine Forsythe.

cf

Catherine was one of my first favorites and I like her style. I came to think of her as our resident reporter/lifestyle editor - specializing in technology, sports, and all things canine. Catherine, I'm not sure I understand why you're so pissed at mishima666 but this place is not the same without you. I'd like you back please.

So there you have it folks. The weekly dish. Quantitatively speaking, I skimped on the comment feature 'cause I've got other shit to do. I will have more next time. Signing off for now...

Good day and good luck.

Contributors~

gabby Gabby Abby did an extensive interview with Alysa in October of last year. Ok, whatever. She's trying to claim discovery credit now, but don't believe the hype.

The rival rag~

robin Robin Sneed's OS Week in Review. If I must have a rival, let it be a cherished friend. Thanks for the shout out Robin.

OS'es first gossip rag, I love it and you picked a great person and post to start with. I really hope Catherine has a change of heart. She taught me a lot of stuff on the computer and helped keep the spam off. Look at it now!
You are a great person.. It 657 am ans I am smiling from ear to ear.. I am going to send this to Catherine. Alysa if you did not know is my long lost sister from another life. We both decided we worked at Chanel..
and OS writers.. give peace a chance.
Disco Fett did not like our challenge but he is a cool guy.. but I still linked him..:)
rated with hugs
I forgot to add.. In my past life Larry and I had a love affair.. okay in my dreams hahahah
This is cool and clever (and not just because you mentioned me.) ~r
a gossip column! brilliant BSB! just brilliant (can I know have a blurb too?) Alysa 's post is always charming and funny, it has nothing to do with the fact she has a flat in Paris that she gets so many hits, stop it BSB. No one wants Joanie to do anything to her face and that's why Emily didn't condone it, get on board with that. Catherine is still monitoring us cautiously and waiting till we are just about chin up in spam (any moment) and is going to threaten ED I TOR with a spectacular come back post ( we hope) Just sayin.
Thank you, BB for the shout out, and at this point, yes I am dancing as fast as I can. When you've a long time and spent much of that time as a single travel writer you do get around.
@Rita, I'm sure you will get a blurb now that you've brought that cool hat back! xo
love this concept, great shout-outs!
How many ways are there to tell you how excessively cool you are? I really like this concept; I hope you plan to keep it going, at least periodically. Mwah!

Lezlie
How do you look in a tiara? Also, I'm going to rip your claim about Alysa right off your bad self, see THIS. Ahhh-HA.

I can't set up a link here apparently, so here it is:
http://open.salon.com/blog/atlbch/2010/10/09/alysa_salzberg_os_reporter_on_the_seine_in_paris

Alysa will be so charmed that we're fighting over her!
Thanks all--I hoped it wouldn't be to insular to be interesting. This place has more than plenty drama to dish about. Why shouldn't we have our own rag. Oh, and if you happen to see a particulary good comment please send it my way. I will link you for your trouble.

Linda--I'm not surprised you related to Alysa--two creative, free spirits, no brainer.

Joanie-Without turning on the sap tap, let me just say...I'm especially pleased that you liked it.

Rita--If you are to be featured in the future, I must insist that we keep the hat.

Lea--"I get around", that from a woman who carries just-in-case condoms in her purse.

Bernadine--I got your PM, thanks so much for the feedback.
(now)... a bit red faced...
Lezlie--I certainly will keep it up, especially if I have contributors (hint, hint).

Gabby--It's on!
Bonnie--Kudos on your find. Those of us who make these disoveries are never thanked enough. Is it too much to ask for a little recognition? As far as accuracy, if you're referring to my totally made up bit about mentoring Alysa...anyone in the know would know it was a lark. I wasn't going for accuracy.
Hey! It's like da Nu Yawk Post for OSers! Tanks for the dish, Blue. All kidding aside this was great and refreshing. Will there be more? R
Neat idea BB and well done!

Will the "OS Weekly" appear every Wednesday?

...and thanks for the mention
This is great! You beat me to it! Well, that's okay...I can still post the idea I had for something like this! Well done! xox
Oh my gosh!!! I saw this post title and thought I was hallucinating!

First of all, the most important thing: "Os Weekly" is a great idea, and I hope you keep it up!

Secondly, what you wrote about me is so sweet and funny. Thank you, really.

But there is one thing that I hope you realize you didn't get right: how could you be jealous of me, when you are not only one of the best writers on OS, but an amazing singer, too?! I sing so badly my boyfriend tells me to stop - even love can't transform my hideous voice. And when I think of your singing abilities, I can't even say "Well, it's not like she can write", because you can!!! It's not fair...

When I first came here, your blog was such a delightful discovery. I dreamt that maybe one day you would deign to acknowledge me. I am and always will be a HUGE fan.

As for Gabby Abby, thanks for fighting over me, ladies - I don't think I've ever had that happen before, and by two women I admire as writers and human beings, to boot! Let's try to settle this by saying: BB was my Howard Carter, and Abby was my Svengali. (...So I guess that makes me a mummy or an opera singer?....)

Lastly (sorry this is taking so long), thank you for talking about Catherine Forsythe's departure. She was not only a great blogger, but also so kind and helpful. Just before she left, she helped me solve a problem with my font size in posts - it must have taken her some time to figure out what was going on, but she did it without saying anything. What a great kid. I hope so much that she comes back.

Thanks so much again, and I look forward to next week's edition of *old-timey newsreel music in my head*: OS Weekly!
OS weekly: Absolutely perfect. The ultimate in meta-blogging.

You are one clever lady and I remember now why I was an early fan of yours.
Clever idea, Babe. Put me down for a subscription.
To increase readership, you could have a segment:

"OS Asshat of the Week"

or

"OS's Worst Person in the World"

(you get the idea)
Catherine's out there, we just don't see her, she's cool like that, almost cat like(I gave her standing as a cat!!She decided to go as a Russian Blue...good choice, I say!!! :D)

But I come here not to dig into old ones, but to create new ones, I THINK THIS SITE NEEDS A GOOD COAT OF PAINT, SOMETHING BRIGHT AND SPRING LIKE!!!

Thank you!! :D

**Runs into the thorn bushes**
Great idea, BSB. Since I loooooove Alysa, thanks for bringing her to our attention. And yes, Lea has met everyone, including me.

BTW, did you hear the rumors about Matt Paust and .....
This is a great idea. -R-
"Quantitatively speaking, I skimped on the comment feature 'cause I've got other shit to do."

This is going to be fabulous, I like your style.
Through countless emails, Catherine helped me with a stats course. I passed that grad course because of her. Kindness doesn't begin to describe her. In my books, she's one of the most generous people I have ever met. I miss seeing her regular posts on this site. I hope she drops by and sees your post.
I sent it to catherine BB.. we love her a lot.
Nice paper you got there Babe!!!
Great concept, I just hope you don't go all NY Times and lay a firewall on us... Thanks for doing this, a great guide.
haha, if you look at her early blogs, I was the only one commenting as I recall. so it seems you're mistaken. I think she can vouch for me that I showed her the ropes early on. I take full credit. in fact Im going to write a juicy tell-all roman-a-clef any minute now.
". . . of course, not, but". . . ." It has been a long time since I have seen the eloquence of a single comma demonstrated with such vividness.

Thank you for passing up some work and bringing us this star.
OS Weekly! What a great idea! And Alysa is a beautiful treasure indeed.

Wonderful post!
Robin--Sorry about the similar idea thing. It's happened to me where I had an idea and someone else posted first. It kinda sucks when that happens, but since we're friends we'll make it fun. I loved your video weekly and will remain faithful as ever.

vzn--hmmm, I do remember you being there early on at Alysa's place when commentors were few. But if you think you're taking credit for MY discovery...you better think again buster!

Larry--I am considering doing the Weekly every Wednesday. Also, you're absolutely right about having an asshat segment. I will have to brainstorm about making it fun snarky as opposed to mean snarky. We'll see what happens.

Alysa--you came, you saw! I am so glad you enjoyed it. Sure that mentoring business was all for play, but it is true that I noticed you early on and knew you were a gifted writer. How could I have imagined you would turn out to be such a very fine person as well. Here's to new adventures.

Nikki--what a great compliment coming from you, being a colleague and all :) I hope you won't hesitate to give feedback anytime you are so inclined.

Cranky--thanks for the heads up on Matt Paust. I'll have my crack investigative team get on it right away.

Eve--thanks for sharing your story about Catherine. She would never have said so herself, but we all know what a generous spirit she is.

Tink--I will get on that paint job as soon as I can afford to hire more staff...damn budget cuts you know.
Kiss, kiss, hug, Bluestocking! xox
This was fun! I look forward to your next edition. I miss Catherine, too.
Correction: Stellaa did not "flounce." She was forced out. Others left because they could not bear to see what was happening. I am glad that you think Alysa is saving OS, but many, many members have written similar posts to hers and nothing has ever changed. Just a little historical perspective.
Emma-- I feel like you're so quick to assume someone is talking about Stellaa. How can you correct me when I never even mentioned her. I am fully aware of the circumstances under which she left, but I made it a point not to get into those particulars because I knew it would drag everyone right back into the ugly. The blanket statement was true, some people did leave in a huff. Not only did I not name anyone, I made no judgements about the why of their departures. Yes, I do believe there has been a lot of negative energy around here lately and I'm glad to see things getting back to what I perceive as a relative "normal".

As far as Alysa...far from trying to say she saved OS, as if OS needed to be saved, I just said a lot of people used her post to vent on the subject. A simple truth. From an editorial perspective, the whole "peace talks" thing made for good copy. Everything I did here I did in an effort to make an interesting read while keeping a positive tone.

You're right, many people wrote metas on the subject. Why did I highlight Alysa's? Because I like her and it's my rag. Certainly not because I thought her post changed the fundamental nature of OS. The fact that she wrote a meta which was extremely well-subscribed provided the perfect excuse to do a gush piece on my friend--simple as that.

It's all just a lark Emma, this OS Weekly thing, something I hoped would be fun. If I said "famous flounces" it's only because I thought the words looked good together in print. I can see you're not amused, but I can't possibly please everyone. The last thing I was going for was historical perspective.
Now I have something else to strive for. A mention in your gossip column would be an honor!

Wonderful
I miss Catherine too
Hoping the applause
will bring her back
for an encore
Loving your
OS Weekly
hope to see
that back too
rated with love
I LOVE THIS!!!! So glad I get to be a part.
I got here late but it was worth the wait!

This is a great idea. I wonder if you know how much work it's going to be though. You do? OK, double that and add 200%. Right. Now you've got it.

I think Leapin Larry made a terrific suggestion. We OSers need a place to kick some ass at times. It might save a few flame wars if we can vent a little.

Go for the gold, babe!

;-)
