America Built America Tough: Obama's SOTU Sloganeering

Rate: 1 Flag

Last week, Obama picks General Electric’s CEO Jeffrey Immelt as his chief outside economic adviser. In last night's State of the Union Address,  Obama's big tag line was, "We do big things." GE's big slogan in the 1980s was, "We bring good things to life." Coincidence?

This wasn't our Sputnik moment or our generation's equivalent of JFK's "Ask Not" speech.  Hell, it wasn't even, "Yes We Can." No, it was Obama's Don Draper moment -- but not the cool Don Draper of the 1960s. It was more like what the fat, balding, past-his-prime Don Draper would have been doing in the 1980s to hang onto his perch in the ad game. Maybe Obama should have tried these slogans instead.

America! Built American Tough!

America! We build excitement!

Have an America and a smile.

Catch the America Spirit.

Okay, this could go on forever.
