My Visit Back to Open Salon Land

Rate: 18 Flag

Doomsday guy3

It's been a long time since I've been back to the old neighborhood, Open Salon, and I thought it would be nice to just revisit and share where I've been. At the risk of sounding like a braggart I will share what I think is a sweet success story from a site which I'm grateful to.

The beginning of my new career in cartooning coincided with the beginning of the birth of Open Salon. With the encouragement of the then editor, Kerry Lauerman, I used Open Salon as my drawing board. Kerry understood the value of visuals, any visuals, to attracting eyeballs and was posting people based on their potential to attract readers. As a result, I was enjoying a forum again after an absence from newspapers. This was tremendously generous and instrumental to my success now. I learned from the feedback and reactions of OSers readers. My craving for attention on OS developed my disclipline and I tried harder and harder to entertain the readers. I recently wrote Mr. Lauerman to personally thank him in his role in my receiving a nomination as 2011 Gag Cartoonist of the Year by the National Cartoonist Society. I just returned from their award reception in Boston–I lost.

The highlight of my time on Open Salon were the cartoon caption contests. Hundreds of readers submitted their best punchlines to politically charged drawings at a time when every corner of OS was alive with the prospect of change and political involvement. It's not the same, but for old time's sake, for those who go back with me to those old days, my drawing is this week's cartoon caption contest in the new New Yorker.

Today, I'm a regular for The New Yorker, Reade's Digest, Barron's, Wall Street Journal and others including the top publications in England like The Prospect, Spectator, The Oldie, Private Eye, etc. My written humor pieces now appear elsewhere, too, the most recent a feature about my midlife crisis published in The New York Times.

My reasons for leaving were both real and petty. 99% of my time here was joy. But the 1% downfall soured the experience. Many of my new friends (Ex., Liz Emrich) had left due to increasing hositilities between writers. My relationships got more intense and I started meeting some OSers in person while my pieces tha were bumped onto Salon's home page would garner death threats and racist slurs. I was spending way too much time on OS and got obsessive. I began work on a movie based on my book (which was supported very well here by my OS friends) but I was still spending way too much time on Open Salon that should have been spent on that project.

Then the new editors came in and they never choose my work as an EP and I stopped getting any covers–you have to watch what you wish for. At first I welcomed it as I was feeling like teacher's pet before. Months later my ego got the best of me and I pouted...I felt the new editors were ignoring my wonderfulness. But what really got me to pack my bags was the unfortunate invasion of spammers and the technical problems which followed.

Many dear friends I made on Open Salon I not only still keep in touch with but I work with as contributors for an online humor magazine I run called the Basement. Some of those still here include the very talented Gary Justis and Con Chapman.

So that's my story. To those who remember me, I hope you are well. To those who don't...hello, it's nice to meet you.

Hi Bob,
Yes indeed it is the end of an era when Oprah says good-bye isn't it? She amazingly was on another show that is of little interest to me, "The Nate Burkus Show". I am not fond of interior design, even though I know at times it could be useful, I am full of my own creative manuvures, if you stick around long enough I am in one of my heights of bi-polar disorder as they call it, you can watch couchs go flying, bird cages with flying animals flying, and dishes that will disapper as if magically taught to fly in to the dishwasher. All too much for me to describe in one sitting, but seriously Oprah was on entertaining Nate to her incredible compound, that she of course needs a golf cart to get from point A to point B. There she was speaking about the loves of her life, her 5 dogs, (I have 5 dogs as well, why can't I get a make over with Nate)? She was also discussing her favorite things, she loves the color green, as do I. We share commanalities, I also love Gail her close friend who now has her own radio show. But Oprah will always have a space for t.v. in living room, and her life, since she was born to communicate. People that communicate do it with passion, regardless of the subject at hand, I belive that has also given her a unique presence in being able to deliver. She has given of herself, her talents, and continues to encourage people to be their best. We didn't have such types when I was growing up, the most I remember was all the examples by all the great t.v. shows, but there was no one that had to say A, B, C, are we any better I wonder?
"Then the new editors came in and they never choose my work as an EP and I stopped getting any covers–you have to watch what you wish for."

Yeah, I remember that. It's like one day you were a member of the club, and the next day you weren't. And that was during a time when there was some monumentally worthless crap on the cover -- "breaking news," poor-quality two-line posts, and so on. So maybe it's better that you weren't associated with those covers. Being on the cover at that time wasn't exactly an honor.

Anyway, welcome back, if only temporarily, and I hope you visit again.
Thanks for coming back and leaving a note, Bob. I've always enjoyed your work here on OS, and good for you with your success in other venues. I hope you stay awhile, even with the technical problems.
Bob, this is a kind word to Open Salon...from a kind man. I want to say publicly you have opened doors for me I never knew could actually exist...at least not in my lifetime..heh...

Seriously, it's hard to write with enough meaning and feeling how grateful I am for your unselfish encouragement and advice. Always helpful, in a way people are who are True Masters of their craft.
Thank you always for your feedback, and belief in my work, and thanks for the kind mention.
I loved the way you mention You got back from a Cartoonist Award Celebration and you wrote - I lost. That's not being a braggart. We are happy as bees.
That make sense?
Adults confuse fleas.
If Open Salon is slow?
Go practice basketball.
Use bounce trampoline.
Flounce and shoot hoops
Some call it dunking balls.
If Solon is slow we wash up.
We proofread in the bathtub.

I love 'The New Yorker' illustrations.
I remember the one where folk are meeting.
The lecturer is pointing a Long Pointing Stick.

The stick goes all thee way through the persons ear.
The caption under the sketch/drawing says this to other:
`
"As you can see, Henderson has no brain." I feel sad for Kerry.
He may be as sad looking as a basset hound and sour as a bulldog.

I just got another "Pop Up' that something @OS went wrong `gin."
~waves~ The Tech problems are well, they're still here. So am I.

I know, damn. :)
Thanks for all the kind words. I wasn't sure who was here but it's a pleasant surprise to hear from some of my favorites and a couple from the OS Hall of Fame (at least there should be one). (I even went back and proofread the piece now that I know it was read!)
Bob, very nice to see a new post here by you today! Those are some great projects and publications that you are currently involved with. Your wonderful work was a major part of Cartoon Saturday becoming established here, in my opinion, and I'd love to see more of your cartoons on OS again!
Thank you. I did reach out to cartoonists back in the day and dragged everyone here. I would have never guessed that over population would turn out to be a problem with too much talent, too many wonderful posts and not enough cover space creating an unfair neglect to many not being favorited. There were some growing pains. Maybe the answer would have been sub-divisions so like cartoons didn't take all of Saturday, etc.?
I congratulate you on all your wonderful successes including your most surprising success in being able to log on here and post something on this wretched server.
Given the technical difficulties on the site, you may notice that the same posts that were up when you left are still here.

Take off your coat and stay awhile!
Good to see you back and the "hostilities" continue boss, and the Cover is what it is - but that camaraderie is still there somewhat.
Good to know about all the good work you are doing and that you are happy , when u were in your heydeys here I was a newbie and a silent admierer and rater - now I fight, talk back and sometimes write ;) . Hope you would post here once in a while. I just wrote how it wd be great if writers and artists did not post everyday and gave people time to assimilate to read well - and asking for the Cover update to be weekly rather than be hourly daily which leaves one breathless and panting kind of. But then it is what it is and u make the mpst of what you can get I suppose. I hope you enjoy your time while you are here. Welcomeback Home :)
Thanks so much guys. I agree with what your saying here-I thought when people were posting up to twice a day, is was impossible to be supportive to all we followed. And of course, this server is driving everyone insane. They should just set-up a new place called Open Salon II.
Hey Bob, happy to hear all is fine and well in your world! Thanks for sharing your honest assessment here; I have had similar thoughts and wondered about my work and purpose here. Good luck to you, and if you need any assistance, feel free to contact me! Take care *♥* ;)
Good to see you back, Bob, and congratulations on all of the success. I've always enjoyed your work.

Pouting and ego - welcome to the club. Frustration with spammers and technical problems - ditto.
Snowmen rule! Seriously, it's good to see you've done well Bob. Good to an "old timer" still walking the halls of OS.
Oh this sounds like the real thing. So glad you touched base with us and let us know your feelings and wishes. Carry on camping where ever that may Beber
Yo Bob - good cartoon, as always, you smart-ass!
Nice to see you back in the mosh pit.
Glad you have had such success with your cartoons and look forward to seeing more of them.
Bob thanks for the Oprah gag. I wouldn't be surprised if that really was a sign in NYC. There used to be a nutter with a bullhorn on 13th and 3rd, dressed in a potato sack, sputtering all day, shouting things of great importance: Dirty dishes have bacteria, David Letterman is a sell out, The Jews are wrong to ban pork, Little Italy has sh*tty coffee, and Oprah isn't black, she's rich.

*The latter used to crack me up.* Sorry to hear it's the end of the world for you on OS. I'd of liked to interact and get a good fresh read of you, here.

Congratulations on your successes past, present and future. Sounds like you were much loved here and it's clear you have a good head on your shoulders. So then... Bravo to you and your new online magazine!
This is actually some really good information that I will be able to use thanks!

Bob,

I am so happy to hear that you are doing so well. I just saw your slide show about the Super Bowl that was in The New York Times, and it really made me smile.

You deserve all the success that you have achieved because you did it by working hard and being so darn talented.

XOXOXO

P.S. Please send my best regards to your lovely wife. She must be so proud of you.
