I do play pinohcle but due to my inability to cheat I don't win very often. Recently disabled I turned to Open Salon to re-engage my writing bug. Update, cat population now at 3. homes found for kittens. Update two add one cocker spaniel to the list and maybe just shoot me.

Steve Jobs Dead at 56 breaking news

Rate: 26 Flag

Apple is reporting that co-founder Steve Jobs has died.  CNN reports the cause was pancratic cancer.  Jobs, along with Steve Wozniac created the Apple computer in a garage in the mid seventies and effectively launched the world wide spread of personal computing.

Jobs was a well known maverick and innovator in computing, he was the first to use a GUI (graphic user interface) in home computing, Jobs also pioneered the use of the "mouse".  These two innovations changed the face of personal computing and they were both adopted by other personal computer manufacturers.

I was led into computing by the Apple II and although I adopted the P.C. platform of IBM I still was impressed by the way that Apple was unafraid to try new approaches to data manipulation and the way they were able to pioneer such devices as the iPod and the PDA.

It saddens me to see this member of the Boomer set go since he was very nearly my own age.  I guess that seeing the older Boomers go was one thing but now?  It is my own genertation that begins to pass on.  The world is a diffferent place thanks to Steve Jobs, he will be missed.

Wow, how sad. Jobs was an awesome guy! [r] libby
Sad, shocking, stunning, even though we sort of expected it.
Bobbot, I was extremely saddened by the news about his passing. Like you, one of my early computers was also an Apple II. His death leaves a huge void in the world.
I wasn't totally surprised but yes, very sad to learn the news tonight.
I very worthy example of human ingenuity and creativity. He will be missed .
Indeed. So sad to die at 56. Left behind his wife Laurene and 3 children. How he lived this long since 2004 after the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is a mystery to me.
Rest in Peace, Steve; and thank you for your great contributions.
Deborah, the type of cancer Steve Jobs had was islet cell carcinoma, which is not the same as pancreatic carcinoma. I know this because in June 2004 my husband got the same presumptive diagnosis. Where pancreatic carcinoma generally has survival rates of less than six months, islet cell can be highly operable and treatable and the expectation of survival beyond five years is very optimistic. In Steve Jobs' case, having it spread to his liver did not bode well, but seven plus years of survival post diagnosis is excellent.
I saw it on Yahoo and was just frozen. So sad to lose such a personality.
RIP.
a true master innovator, a corporate mastermind, a demanding perfectionist. one of the great minds of the 20th century. I highly recommend the movie "pirates of silicon valley"
There is someone who left his mark. The personal computer, I-Phone and I-Pad have changed the way billions go about their daily lives. Sad that cancer got him so soon.
Poor guy. He was brilliant. It's a new era for Apple.

Pancreatic cancer is an awful way to go--by the time you suspect anything is wrong with you, it's usually too late.

Requiescat in Pacem, Steve Jobs.
A lot of that was inspired by PARC, but yes, he was a giant. He democratized computing. Revolutionized music listening and telephone use. He was also an asshole, but one who wanted to change the world for the better and did. In a remarkable way.
Sad news. Condolences to the family he left behind.
Thus creativity dies...

He was interesting, and challenging.

It's all pop-up apps from here on out.

Rest in peace Steve Jobs. That man was brilliant. At least he was alive to see his amazing impact on the world. Many innovative people have not been so lucky to witness the chain reaction caused by their earthly contributions. Jobs was a power house who left an indelible mark on us all. He saw his death coming, he suffered greatly, and it is sad to see him go, but like any genius of his stature... he's not and never will be truly gone.
Well said. He was a real game changer and a role model.
Excellent. Can't add another word.
If Steve Jobs had been in charge of other American companies, we'd be selling American cars in Japan, American TV sets in Taiwan, and American cuckoo clocks in the Black Forest. They'd be assembled in China, but you can't have everything... Seriously, I'm trying to think of another American corporate visionary whose products are coveted all over the world. Coming up with zilch.

Rest in peace, American genius.
Thanks, Bob. You're a good reporter.
