I built inkjet printers, embedded computer boards, restored and repaired both cars, motorcycles and electronics. I read, write, and do arithmetic (albeit poorly) My wife claims that I have more useless knowledge than anyone on earth and resultingly no one will play trivial pursuit with me anymore. I do play pinohcle but due to my inability to cheat I don't win very often. Recently disabled I turned to Open Salon to re-engage my writing bug. Update, cat population now at 3. homes found for kittens. Update two add one cocker spaniel to the list and maybe just shoot me.

So Long Cheetah

Rate: 7 Flag

I just read an A.P. report that Cheetah the chimpanzee that co starred with Johnny Weismuller in several "Tarzan" movies died on Chritmas Eve at the ripe old age of eighty.

Hard to believe that the last survivor of all of those movies was the chimp.  I only have anecdotal things to say about him but, I will try to vet them.  First off Cheetah was a ladies man.  His antics were rumored to have been enough to make even Myrna Loy blush.  He loved a good cigar too I have read.  As he grew older, like many chimpanzee actors he became less than friendly and was prone to flinging feces at those who he disliked.

He did however live a long time after he ended his acting career.  He spent many years living with Johnny Weismuller on his estate and when Weismuller passed on he moved to Florida.  He never married but was still interested in the ladies.  I don't know if he had children but I saw on sixties version of Tarzan that claimed a "Cheetah Junior" in its cast.

This is a bit tongue in cheek but, in all seriousness, we lose small parts of our lives and for the most part we hardly notice.  I's rekon that most people never imagined that he was still living.  I spent a lot of Sunday afternoons watching Tarzan Theater on KPLR out of St.Louis.  Truth be told, I still watch the occasional Tarzan flick but I prefer the classics, the ones that had the original Cheetah.

Ahhh-awwww-aaaaaaaaahh!

Hey! I know! But you call a chimp a Cheetah and dumb ol' Tarzan takes you at your word. He didn't get smart until he became Lord Greystoke and moved to London. Then, naturally, he became smart by absorption or sumthin' in less than 14 hours!

English Lords can do that y'know.......

.
Had no idea. Thanks for this update, Bob. I wonder how long he lived in actual years?
Thank you for this tribute to Cheetah. I heard about his passing on the news this morning. Rated.
It seemed to me, Cheetah was the smartest one in those movies. RIP Cheetah~~
RIP Cheetah.
I remember watching some episodes of Tarzan when I first started living in Canada, without understanding the story very well. Never followed up on the actors lives, though. Thanks, Bob.

Turns out the owners were lucky that Cheetah remained as tame as he was. Some chimps get violent.
There is a show called "Fatal Attractions" about people who fall in love with nondomestic type animals. A lot of them get killed.
Can't get over the fact that he lived to 80!

When I heard the news, I was floored.

Back when I was a kid (eons ago) Cheetah was one of my favorite characters. I loved Tarzan movies when Johnny Weismuller played the part...and when the part went to someone else, got my first major entertainment disappointment.
