I built inkjet printers, embedded computer boards, restored and repaired both cars, motorcycles and electronics. I read, write, and do arithmetic (albeit poorly) My wife claims that I have more useless knowledge than anyone on earth and resultingly no one will play trivial pursuit with me anymore. I do play pinohcle but due to my inability to cheat I don't win very often. Recently disabled I turned to Open Salon to re-engage my writing bug. Update, cat population now at 3. homes found for kittens. Update two add one cocker spaniel to the list and maybe just shoot me.

How Many Children?

Rate: 13 Flag

News from the Persian Gulf grows more threatening everyday.  I know that this blog gets hits from many parts of the world(thanks Google Ads) so I want to speak to that global audience.  I also aim this at my own countrymen as well.

How many children are enough to sacrifice for power and glory and "God"?  How many gallons of blood or tonnes of flesh will make things right enough to end slaughter for some nonsense or another?  Do we need to pile the corpses up in a stack so the question of who won is answered by sheer volume?  Should we stack up the money spent to bring the slaughter about?

How big of a stack proves that your way is the only way?   What makes you think that money and power are what your gods wish from you anyway?  I've done a lot of reading and find the very sacred texts you all love to quote as being less than in favor of mass slaughter.  The prophet, said that all believers in the God of Abraham are people of the book and not infidels.  Christ is supposed to have said that we should love one another as we love ourselves.  Yet religion is the fuel on the fire threatening humanity's very existance.

We repress those we do not agree with and we are exhorted by religions to be both hospitable and kind to anyone we meet.  We are supposed to show them the path without hatred or murder or suffering.  We are supposed to treat the least of each of us as though they were no different from the most.  Yet we clamor for laws that bid us kill our fellow human beings.  We spend money that could feed millions on ways to kill more people more efficiently.  We decry any one who fails to show the proper respect for what we call "religion".  Why?

When the world reaches the point it now appears to be, we need to ask these questions of our governments and our people.  Make the show how this killing is to be justified.  This will never happen because when couched in the terms of sheer carnage no excuse is good enough.  Those who stand to gain should be forced to sacrifice the most.  There is always someone that gains from war.

Those people, almost always do not suffer for that gain either.   This is wrong, it is wrong to ask others to fight and die for the assured profits of another and in the case of what we see today, without regard for the religious aspects, seems to be about the same thing all world wars have been about, world hegemony.  Who set the prices, who makes the rules, who gets the lions share of the profits, and the prestige of global power.

Iran knows that it will not come out on top in this but, they have close ties to China and China seeks to claim its place as the Middle Kingdom.  Iran is also a prime partner with China in other ways too I suspect since they recently showed us that they can hijack our technology and use it against us.  When our enemies are showing us that they can do this they are saying we can not be hindered in our goals.  A direct challenge is designed to do nothing less than instigate confrontation and then hope that confrontation cascades upon itself until the goal of war is reached.

Time to stop the killing is before it has begun.  That time is at hand.  To all of the worlds people I say this, "you have nothing I wish to take, I have nothing to use as excuse to control you.  All I want is to see my children and grandchildren survive and prosper in a better world."

I hope everyone in the world reads this Bob. We can only wish!
Again, amen! However, history seems to teach us that we never learn.

Yeah, I know from experience that I hold little in the way of persuading others to see the point. I also know that this post will wither away with only the words of the few to send it along. None the less, I thank you for taking the time to read the ramblings of an old hippie.
"Time to stop the killing is before it has begun."
How sage and it is not too late. If mankind would only take heed of these words and stop!

I know it's a hopeless feeling, throwing words at disaster, but it's still a good thing to put those words out there, to share the sense of frustration & anger & helplessness. Like the Jackson Browne song goes -- the people in power like to tell us who our enemies are, but "they're never the ones to fight or to die." Keep writing, keep talking, keep hoping.
As we used to say waaaaaaay back in the 60's--"right on". This was right on, Bob. Thanks
I don't want to kill anyone for God, and I don't think God loves those kinds of sacrifices. If people wish to offer up some sacrifice to God, offer up pride, hatred, envy and greed. Keep love, compassion, justice and mercy close to your heart instead.
I could not have said it better I wish we all could make it so...
Bob, I couldn't agree more with you! There are times when I just don't understand human nature and the "need" to fight and kill. All one has to do is project yourself into the so called "enemy" and that should be enough to end all wars. Or as Sister Therese of Calcutta once said, "The Jesus in me loves the Jesus in the other person." (She said something like that.)
Yeah, amen to that...it is getting very scary out there, man.
I may not be your target audience, but I read it and I'm with you. Stop already.
