Title
Poobah (but not so grand)
Company
mine own
Bio
No boomer I, too early shuffled on this mortal coil. Sharing a birthdate with Napoleon, Julia Child, and others too numinous to mention. Proud graduate of Charm City's PS 234 and Weehawken's single HS (just down the street from where Burr dispatched Hamilton). Erstwhile art gallery owner, paperback writer, advocate for and against human service programs, fundraiser for "progressive" non-profits. Now teetering on the crumbling edge of impecuniosity. Still delighted to be here, tho. Still wearing the union label and trying to believe in the myth of human progress.

HOW TO PREVENT RAPE

The following has been circulating for years.  The author is unknown.  In the wake of the Halliburton rape case, and 30 senators--all Repugnicans--voting against the Franken amendment that denies government contracts to companies that make their employees sign contracts that say they will n… Read full post »

A Dem Majority in Congress? Oh, Goodie!

What's been happening the last few days with ACORN has been pissing me off even more than the contretemps over healthcare.  (And that's saying something!)  Keep in mind how many ACORN employees-- six out of about 14,000, I believe--were accused of any wrongdoing.  Why, it's as if… Read full post »

Sex and Scallions

Are scallions good for you?

I just ate four scallions.

Are scallions rich in anti-oxidants?

I know they’re full of crunchy goodness, and tasty.  But what else?

The four scallions I sliced into one-and-a-half-inch pieces and threw into the wok with nine pork and leek dumplings.  I wait… Read full post »

Anthem for Labor Day

I post the following because today is Labor Day, the day we are supposed to honor the true wealth producers.   Lest we forget.

YOU CAN PUSH THE HEALTH CARE WEINIES

What follows is a letter, slightly edited only to correct typos, from the site http://www.1payer.net/faxapp/senders/add/cid:28.

If you believe, as many of us do, that our health care system is in or near crisis, and that the best solution is a cha… Read full post »

Top 10 Brushes with Greatness

* William Boyd, better known as Hopalong Cassidy, was  spotted by my brother in Times Square with a big blonde in furs on his arm.  He must've looked very uncowboy-like.

Here are the four questions to ask your member of congress about the public option:

War Story

Because we Americans are famously devoted to history, I don’t have to tell you that the Russo-Japanese War was fought in 1904 and 1905.  And of course you will recall that President Teddy Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation services, but I do not expect you to… Read full post »

If memory serves, it was always around Christmas time that Pete Seeger played an annual concert at Carnegie Hall.  This is the late '50s I'm talking about, and I was in high school and living in northern New Jersey.  The folk revival had been going on long enough for us… Read full post »

Gatesgate: Weighing In

I'm so tired of all the blather, but since I can't stop it, I might as well join in.  Just another white man with nothing better to do than sound off today.

President Obama, for whom I am not a constant apologist, be assured, was entirely correct to opine that the… Read full post »
