One Hit Wonders

Rate: 23 Flag

Here is my theory. You must do this one hit wonder thing every once in a while whether you feel like it or not. For therapeutic reasons. Lighten up after election night, for example.

Here is a selection of some from my playlist that I go to occasionally. Never fails to make me smile. There should be at least one in here for everyone, except the sticks in the mud.

One Hit Wonders - Afternoon Delight - The Starland Vocal Band.mp3     Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

I know. I know. Afternoon Delight does not reflect well on me in any way.

One Hit Wonders - Mary Jane Girls - All Night Long(1).mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

The Mary Jane Girls were Rick James' backup singers. Somebody may try to tell me that they had more than one hit. Forget it.

I know what is going to happen here. You are going to ask, "What the hell are those girls really saying?"

Save you some time. Here are the lyrics, epic in their depth and breadth:

Mary Jane Girls - All Night Long Lyrics

Hey, baby
Would you meet me on the roof tonight
I got a surprise for you

All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)

Oh, something's got me so excited, baby
A feeling I've been holdin' back so long
You got me shook up, shook down, shook out on your lovin'And boy, I can't wait to get started lovin' you

All night long (All night long)
I've waited for your love to come
Up to the roof to show you the proof
It's you that I love, I love

And now that I can feel you coming closer to me
I'm not running
Boy, may I say
I can't wait to get it on

I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(I can't wait to love you, baby)
I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(Ooh...ooh...ooh...)

I'm gonna give it to you
(I've been waiting for you so long, come to me)
I'm gonna give it to you
(Meet me on the rooftop in the night)
I'm gonna give it to you
(Come get my love delight)

Oh, something's got me so delighted, baby
I see your face in everything I do
You got me shook up, shook down, shook out on your lovin'And boy, there is just no way I'll ever get over you

All night long (All night long)
I've waited for your love to come
Up to the roof to show you the proof
It's you that I love, I love

Up on this rooftop I'll be waiting
For your love, anticipating
Hurry up and come
'Cause I can't wait to get it on

I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(I'm gonna give it to you, give it to you, give it to you, give it to you, give it to you)
I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(I can't wait to love you, baby)

I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(I'm gonna give it to you, give it to you, give it to you, give it to you, give it to you)
I'm gonna give it to you
All (All) night (Night) long (Long)
(I can't wait to love you, boy)

Ooh...ooh...
I'm gonna give it to you
I'm gonna give it to you

Climb up on the ladder, don't stop
My love's waiting when you reach the top
I'm gonna give it to you
All night long

Climb up on the ladder, honey
What I got is better than money
All night long

Come on up, boy, don't be late
What I got for you won't wait
All night long

Ooh...ooh...
I'm gonna give it to you

Swee dee dee doo doo ya
Twee dee dee doo doo ya

Player - Baby Come Back .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search engine

Baby Come Back by Player is my own personal favorite of all time. Damned thing brings tears to my eyes. Not that any particular person comes to mind when I hear it, mind you. It is just that the theory of thing is heartrending.

"How I wish to God that you were here. . . ."

I  mean, I'm tellin' ya! And that two-beat cease-fire at 2:45 is perfect.

It is a hard buffer for me here. I hope it works better for you up there in the land of milk and honey.  Just in case here is a backup. The guys have respectably long hair, too.

Bertie Higgins - Key Largo .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

Key Largo, for the reader with special taste.

Quarterflash - Harden My Heart .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

I was concerned that you may have forgotten how good Quarterflash was. Here again, yes, they had another couple of tunes that charted, but hell, this is the one.

Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

If you can listen to Mungo Jerry and not smile, then we need to secure professional assistance for you. Really, truly, one and only one.

King Harvest - Dancing In The Moonlight .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

I should detest Dancin' in the Moonlight. Nothing about it is right. I love it anyway. We really are talking only one here. They met on a Friday, got together on Saturday afternoon to record this one song, and then immediately parted ways never to see each other again.

Eddie Holman - Hey There Lonely Girl .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

It would be a good idea to have a jar of Pepto-Bismol® handy, or your other preferred stomach-steadier,  before listening to Hey There Lonely Girl, if you are so inclined.

John Waite - Missing You(1) .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search engine

I myself keep forgetting Missing You. He had a couple of other tunes that got some play on the radio, but nobody remembers them.

10cc - The Things We Do For Love .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search engine

It's either 10 cc or a Lovin' Spoonful, depending on how you measure it. Big, big group in Great Britain, but not in the United States.

We Five - You Were On My Mind .mp3    Found at bee mp3 search engine

This tune is from a very long time ago.

Glenn Frey - All She Want To Do Is Dance .mp3     Found at bee mp3 search engine

Glenn Frey does not belong. All She Wants to Do is Dance is here because I want it to be, I guess.

One Hit Wonders - Dobie Gray - Drift Away - 1973.mp3    Found at bee mp3 search enginehttp://beemp3.com/player/corner-bottomright2.gif">

Same with Dobie Gray. He doesn't belong either because of The In Crowd. This tune is here for the same reason that Glenn Frey's is. It showed up. I put it in.

Honorable mention to One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head and Sweet City Woman by the Stampeders. Oh, what the hell. Here is One Night in Bangkok. If you cannot dance to this, then . . . then . . . Well, I don't know. I simply cannot imagine anyone being unable to dance to this.

Okay you had me at Mary Jane Girls and Afternoon Delight.
BUT when you mentioned The Stampeders from Canada I remembered a specific concert in Sherbrooke ,Quebec and a tidy little 1940's suit I designed with "chapeau".
I shall stop there.
Rated with hugs
Well, hell.
Was it really necessary to print the lyrics to All Night Long ? I mean thanks for that and everything but ...
And where's Bobby Goldsborough's Honey ?
Also 10cc - didn't they do Signs as well ?
As soon as I click Post I'll think of a dozen more.
Damn. I forgot about "Rubber Bullets."
Tell you what. Let's just pretend that the 10 cc tune is not there.
Baby Come Back - wow! Flash back to 1977 when I saw Player in concert in San Francisco. They opened for Styx. Thanks for taking me back....
Loved them all, even the ones I did not remember.

Some great hits and some dreadful misses Brass. Let's emphasize the positive.

Dancing in the Moonlight - I thought it was so-so till I heard it in the 80s between sets at a Rio Nightclub. Great dancing song and I've had a warm spot for it ever since.

You Were on My Mind - Always enjoyed it but grew a new appreciation when a buddy of mine rediscovered it a few years back. Great harmonies and a stirring, building chorus.

One Night in Bangkok - I was in Bangkok when I first heard it so it's always had a special resonance. They really played it a lot.

10CC - Another of tehse bands derving to be better known. They weren't one hit wonders though. There's also The Wall Street Shuffle, Art For Art's Sake (Money for God's Sake), I'm Not in Love and an old and hard to find fave - One Night in Paris. I tried to find the latter on Limewire a couple of years ago and you can guess the results.
Wow, these really take me back. I grew up in the seventies and most of these songs put me right into my poster-plastered, blacklit, bong-hidden bedroom back in Florida. Thanks for the time warp.
Damn! I did an awful job here. I need to rethink this whole list for the seventies alone. That will give me something to do for a couple of days.
I come from the land down under is my all time fave on hit wonder
Some good tunes here B. I didn't know that about King Harvest. I could listen to Lonely Girl all night. I lost my dancing shoes so I'll have to just tap my toes to One Night in Bangkok!

So many great ones and then none of the others matter because "One Night In Bangkok" is just the best.
Damn. I remember those well. Looking forward to my own Peruvian Pepper Tree, by god.
These are great songs. Whip it (Devo), She Blinded me with Science (Thomas Dolby), and They Don't Know (Tracy Ullman) are the one-hit wonders I enjoy on my Zune. Okay, In-A-Gadda-Da Vida, too.
"You Were on My Mind"--great, great song. Great idea here.
fun!! tho as to All Night Long give me Lionel Richie! r.
Great list - but my "one hit wonders" lists always begin with Looking Glass ("Brandy") and the Foundations ("Build Me Up Buttercup").
Thanks for these. I have my own guilty pleasure songs, and I'm happy to sing along with yours.
Fun post. I'll have to check out the ones I don't know. "Afternoon Delight" is also a favorite - my brother did it with an accapella group once. That performance has never been forgotten. R.
You just blew your cool cover big time SteveDos: afternoon delight? thanks for several ear worms today, I feared to listen to them. Is this what you do with the tech knowledge I gave you?
(smile emoticon here)
#I fear to listen to them....
# I fear listening to them.. something like that...
Well I want to mention an obscure band, hell they were obscure when they were current! I am talking the Jimi Hendrix produced Cat Mother and the All Night News Boys. The only album I had was "The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away" and it had some solid old fashioned rock and roll, some original and some not, and a bit of pyschedelic mixed in. I just came across them on You Tube and it brought back some good old hazy memories.
ultimate one hit wonder= Dylan, " the times they are a changin".
he had a minor hit with "blowin in the wind" earlier,
but failed to fully occupy his folk mantle: saviour.

example!!! this fuckin guy won the 2001 grammy for
"things have changed" wherein he screeches
"i used to care
but things have changed"
...........................................................
When Dylan dont give a shit about yr sorry ass no more,
and looks to the sky or inside
for his deliverance,

well..
its a different ballgame.

My daughter made me a CD of songs that she thought were popular when I was her age (she is now a sophomore in college; I am 53). "Afternoon Delight" was the first one on the disk and I nearly threw up in my Prius.
You have explained something in putting these together. Which is why these bands had only one hit (exceptions being Afternoon Delight - I waited a long time for the follow up - though how can you top skyrockets? and You Were on My Mind, a very special song once for some reason I can't think of or remember.)

And thank you for the lyrics to the Mary Jane Girls song. Posting them in full has elevated them to some kind of post-post-modern art. Nice job.
