10 Things worth Loving about sundays

Rate: 16 Flag

This is the last in a series of posts suggested by Rick McCollister after he read my post 10 Things I Love About Mondays . Having come full circle, its now Sunday Morning coming down... though I'm not down. Far from it.  Sundays are special, for many reasons, including:

  1. No alarm clock, yet still awking before dawn, watching the world sleep, at peace with myself and the world, just a tad slower and more peaceful perhaps that a week day.
  2. Coffee slowly, easing into the day
  3. Today's the day to sneak up on the week if I need to, by seeking  into the office when I'm the only one there, getting things done in the silence.
  4. HOUSEWORK DAY, though I internally think of it as IRONING DAY. More proof of my essential weirdness, nothing like putting on an old movie or Sunday Today and ironing up a batch of shirts while pausing in between to savour more coffee. I am not a great ironer, but get satisfaction from seeing the pile transform into a nice crisp collection. Putting a small piece of the world into order.
  5. Contemplation. Very occasionally, less often than I'd like, this includes formal church going. But every Sunday has room for mediation.
  6. Breakfast/brunch, if the urchins are hungry ( I know, when aren't they hungry?). Again, the satisfaction of doing for others.
  7. The Saturday Globe and Mail arrives late from Toronto Saturday, so I seldom read much if any before Sunday, when I try to have at least an hour to absorb everything from political commentary to restaurant reviews and silly fashion columns. A good week it takes, and I allow, two hours.
  8. The bittersweet pain/pleasure of the Toronto Raptors being a rare NBA team that plays, and televises, a lot of Sunday matinee games (because hockey is king of saturday night).  Basketball is perfect to nap through, if I need it.
  9. Cooking, creating, an adventuresome meal. No fast food, no short cuts, everybody at the table. This week, I'm roasting bullwinkle  the moose.
  10. In between seasons of Mad Men, getting to bed early, to prepare to start all  over again, bounding out of bed excited because Monday is coming...

This is a pivot day, a peaceful homey day for so many. Maybe the favorite of all. Have a good one, and thanks for sharing your pleasures.
A relaxing day! The best part is rising early and that first cup of hot, strong coffee. You are the only person I've heard of besides myself who likes to iron. I even iron my sheets, nothing like freshly ironed sheets! You have a great day and do those cuffs well!
"Putting a small piece of the world into order. " Nice.
Very nice. And dear God it really is housework day.
rated.
Wish I had your control with regard to reading material. Every sort of magazine and newspaper is heaped in my living room, and at least 5 books I really, really want to read are on my nightstand. Two hours is not enough... but more than that, and the day is gone. I do love waking up to a quiet world though, and knowing everyone else is sleeping in a bit too. Can't get as enthusiastic as you over Monday...
Lea: I try not to have favourites, but Sunday is a delight.
Alpha: I'm all about putting things in order. So why is my house so messy?
Pam: it was mostly Tshirts today. Mid sized B wears them everywear. To preserve the logos, I hang dry them, then iron out the wrinkles, but not toooo neat.
Mungular: I try to restrain myself to ironing plus an hour, unless I find extra time...
dcvd: I know whereof you speak - I have 3 books on the go.
Alright, I have done enough de-Christmasing that I'm allowing myself to come comment.

1. I haven't used an alarm clock since I got married. I hate those things, and am still up by 6:40 almost every morning.
4. I am a non-ironer..LOL... but I'm I had the space to sit and fold clothes while watching something good on TV, I'd cherish it so very much.
9. Does this mean that you are Borris?!?

I've so enjoyed these posts, maybe a monthly thing?
This is great, Brian. Critical ingredients for any Sunday: coffee and a long luxurious read of the paper, including (especially) the crossword. And for me, a long walk at the park near my house along Puget Sound. That takes care of the meditation/soul-settling too. Happy Sunday!
It's interesting how much you have revealed about yourself in this series, without directly 'trying' to. Simply describing how each day of the week affects you, what you like about each one. We have no idea what you look like (flower avatar) yet you have painted an elegant, rhythmic self-portrait.

(Thank you also for the acknowledgment and the link, Brian!)

Your perspective on months of the year next?
MzEll: well, I'm definitely not the squirrel ;)
Donna: Puget sound/Lake Superior...similar effect?
Rick: trust me, I'm no sunflower...
Brian, thank you for this series. The older I get (and I'm heading towards 58) the more every single day becomes precious. When I was younger I "spent" time like it had no value; but now I want to savor every minute from here on out.

Please don't misunderstand, my days, like everyone on the planet, are filled with challenges, irritations and imperfections. I'm just trying to choose not to fixate on the negative. Your daily meditations have helped!
Very good. I also like "putting a small piece of the world into order." I can't do anything about the Gaza strip, but by gosh, I can iron a blouse. I also like calm days when I can get things sorted out at home. Thumbified.
Interesting list---sounds relaxing and fruitful---nice combination.
Mine has been a quite enjoyable weekend, lazily at home with the family as well... Great observations...

Enjoyed

sierra: I'm glad to help. I enjoy your posts as well.
Shiral: if we all just make the world a bit better, it will be wonderful.
mah: balance in all things
Greg: thanks for stopping by between your own posts.
I rated this yesterday but did not comment...was rendered speechless by the concept of a guy who not only irons, but actually has an IRONING DAY. I think you need to have a word with my husband.
L not L : whenever I've been the Ironing guy, I've done it in a batch, hopefully once a week. One of the petty annoying habits of the ex was ironing 'as needed' (read: at the last minute), which always seemed to create stress and undue adrenaline rushes. So I started just ironing everything before she got to it. Now, mid size B & i always have lots to wear, even if we pick which to wear on a whim (lil B prefers the messy look....kids!)

have hubby give me a call...
Great post to finish your series. Football on Sundays about to end. Sadness and letting go will follow. I love that you love going to bed early so you can get up for Monday. I really love Mondays. Thanks.
maryt: I had to square the circle back to Monday morning's wake up, after all. That is the "flow" of life.
I loved your views on Sunday!
