What's your inauguration party menu?

Rate: 5 Flag

Last week I offered to post my recipe/method for "Practically Painless chicken" , the specialty I taught my son to cook, this week.

Then I realized that Foodie Tuesday is Inauguration Day, so  my recipe would hardly be topical.  It can wait a week.

As a Canadian, I feel a little left out. Sure, a few of my compatriots are journeying to Washington to witness history, but I've always thought that  one of the essential things about being Canadian is our sense of being outsiders. It's American History being made, not Canadian.

I've always felt unqualified to comment or post on American politics here. Too easy for me to talk, if you know what I mean. Plus, as I mentioned in a comment somewhere, I'm always worried that the NSA might be listening, mistake me for Omar Khadr or Maher Arar, and I'd end up in Guantanamo or Syria. I'll leave OS Canada-Us politics to Juliet Waters . Tough to beat a cover story post.

In Canada, we don't make a big deal of swearing in a Prime Minister - a mid day ceremony, after which he (we've had one 'she' as PM) goes about business. Probably takes the family to Tim Horton's. No parades, no balls.

It did occur to me however that a lot of folks might be planning inauguration parties, and if so, that means FOOD. On Foodie Tuesday. What a perfect subject for OS posts!

So, tell me, what's the menu for your inauguration party?

You may not be aware of Cam Bailey. He's been busy as of late but he's Canadian who would definitely give his opinions on US politics. Oh I understand why you are jealous of us. This is just too much fun...I'm actually taking the day off tomorrow to be soak myself in all of this good news (even if it's temporary!). My menu: BBD's lemon roast chicken. We're having about 10 people over. So lemon roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, carrots. Acorn squash. And I'm making a cake. It's really special when I make a cake. Haven't decided what kind but Devil's Food is always good :).
I haven't given food a thought, but what an obvious oversight! Cake is a good idea, but my favorite food is Mexican--perhaps flan is more apropo--especially since I've heard that Obama's first official meeting with an international head of state (a coveted favor by all accounts) is with Mexico. I am so proud of this selection as I have for a long time felt Mexico should be more of a US priority.

Oh, and, as per the Canadian bit--happy to have your comments neighbor!
I thought Obama's first foreign visit was to Canada... Juliet's post deals with his confusion about our head of state, along with other things.

I've made lemon roasted chicken before, but BBD's recipe looks extra good. More a pie guy than a cake man. Maybe Cam Bailey isn't around because they took him off to a secret prison? Just askin'.
I think he is going to Canada first, no date yet though. Voice your opinion. I have friends in Edmonton and Montreal and love to hear their take on it. Dinner will be something fast and easy as I don't want to miss anything on TV. Good post.
Hey Brian. Thanks for appointing me Canada/U.S. specialist. Wait 'til you hear my take on Battlestar Gallactica as political metaphor. For the record it's been confirmed that Canada will be Obama's first foreign visit. But Mexican pres. Felip Calderon will be Obama's first meeting with a foreign head of state (he'll be visiting Washington.)
Now for the food: I considered a Kenyan sweet potato casserole I discovered. And I may make my grandmother's Irish shortbread recipe to celebrate Obama's Irish ancestry (the secret is to use part rice flour.) Though we may just go with the American heritage and use up some McDonald's coupons. Or put some pineapple on our pizza.
Pam...let's just say I love a good orator, but he has a giant challenge ahead.

Juliet : I agree about BSG, but would love to see who you think represents Bush. If you do pineapple & ham pizza you've got Obama & Biden
ha! I think I will have that O & Joe pizza
I have faith, I'm a believer, he's the man for the job! Just wait and see, it might take a year but, time will tell!
Brian,
I am hereby granting you immunity! You can talk about US politics all you want! :) God knows it's gonna be a lot more satisfying to talk about after tomorrow!!!

YEHAAAA!!! :)
Oh, and I'm not thinking food. Now let's talk champagne...
Brian, I forgot to add: It's the neighbors here with Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza, just 2 blocks down the road. Free delivery, free liter of Pepsi, which will probably still be full at the end of the night. Best pizza in the world!!! Beer! Bourbon!
I guess I am in your shoes. For me its a normal working day. So hello, fellow outsider..
sc: I'm no champagne snob, any bubbly will do.
Pam: bourbon?! now we're talkin'!
Moana: hopefully, it will be a great thing for the world.
Brian, as an American I've felt left out of my own country's politics for a long time. Probably tonight we'll have something in the cheap eats catagory. I'll let you know when I figure it out.
COS: already thumbed your "Yankee soup" recipe... a fitting tribute to tough times.
