10 Thoughts as a Canadian contemplates the Inauguration

Rate: 13 Flag

In my Inauguration Menu post, I expressed my feelings, as a Canadian, of sitting on the sidelines of  history as Obama is sworn in. That feeling is just so Canadian. After all, for decades, we were the quintessential UN "observers" in ceasefire situations.

Several commenters though urged me to share my views, so here are 10 thinks I am thinking about the Inauguration:

  1.  Obama is a great orator, and these troubled times call for inspirational messages.
  2. Obama symbolizes change. Some people fear change, but as a student of history, I know that we can look back and learn, but that we can not live in the past, nor relive it.
  3. Obama was the candidate, and now becomes the President, of hope, and hope is the beginning of the answer to this crisis. Hope that the future is better than the present, and the past.
  4. Obama appeals to what is best in us. This crisis will not be solved by negativity.
  5. Obama is an inclusive leader. America has suffered from politics of division. I like the way he emphasizes the "United" States.
  6. This presidency may fail in many ways. I agree with Glenn Greenwald that one risk is that inclusion will become too conservative. Obama must not forget the need for bold moves.
  7. A forward looking supreme court in step with reality  is essential. Obama's election allows appointments to balance the shift towards excessive conservatism.
  8. One of the great opportunities , not to be overlooked because of the economy, is the need for universal health care. America needs not to copy Canada's flawed system, nor fear its flaws. It has the unique opportunity to do it right, create a state of the art system, but one that frees its citizens from worrying about this basic need.
  9. America has the opportunity to regain its place as a world leader.
  10. Today is one of the rare days I feel a little jealous of my American cousins. I really do have American cousins - grandpa was from Iowa.

Happy Inauguration day, all.... and lets all pray that Obama lives up to his promise, his hopes, his dreams.

We all need it.

Great thoughts, Brian. Without our Canadian cousins (I had an uncle who lived in Montreal and taught at McGill) we Americans would be much impoverished.
Thank you, Brian. Obama is going to be the president of the world that needs him so much.
Well said, and an excellent point about health care. We can do it right, and we must.
thanks for the comments. I missed the speech ...was it even better live than the text? I've been a fan since the 2004 convention because his delivery is magical...
Amen to all ten, fellow world citizen! Thanks for articulating these points so well.
a well-deserved Editors Pick, Brian. Booya!

- a slowly recovering Roadrunner, who missed y'all
Brian, love your 10 comments and they are made very special because you are an ally and a friend from Canada. Thank you!
Rick, Caro, Maryt: wonderful to share with friends.

Caro.... good to see you back. was starting to worry a tad...ya got some catching up to do....
Hey Brian. Good job. Let's hope Obama makes a commitment to the long term integrated commitments that the Canadian health care system so needs. Like you I worry that Obama is going to play things too conservative. Right now at the beginning of his term is when he can best afford to take the biggest risks, and I haven't seen that so far. But for today, let's dream of better times.
Particulary important I believe is the business of Supreme Court picks. I look forward to many of such in the near future.

Thanks for paying attention.
p.s. I have the quintessential American cousins. My uncle was a Veep at Ford (http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=76162). I was trained from a very young age for fiery family debates. So get ready OS. I honor his memory here.
Juliet: Looking forward to your health care post - you start, I'll jump in?

ghostwriter: have you posted on supreme court picks. By tomorrow, that may be timely (rumour that Stevens will announce)
Oh, Canada

Thank you for all the fine thoughts on this glorious day in America.
Brian, way to go! You have the mighty power of observation! I love Canada (except in the winter) and my Canuck friends.

Love your comments, especially #3. You said that very well! Thanks!
thanks, Pam & mah....I hope that this President makes dreams come true...
Some really great thought Brian. Thank you for sharing this list. It was nicely written.
Moana & fireyes.... thanks for the support. I'm distracted by real life for a few days, but hope inspiration will have room to bloom soon.
If the election had turned out otherwise (God forbid!), I would have moved to Canada because of the reasonable, articulate, smart and kind person you are.
and here, I thought it was for maple syrup & universal health care.
