10 Random thoughts This Sunday, or what to cook for supper?

Rate: 15 Flag

This could easily be an odd Sunday when I don't risk the rejection inherent in my need for validation. i could simply not post. No keen reason to post. I have one great posting idea (thanks, Janie), but it is not ready, not time sensitive. It might await my resolving my camera dilemma. which, like my debating dilemma, is all a fiction in my own mind. well, where better to invent fiction.

So, I try to tell myself it doesn't matter whether I get six or sixteen or (ha!) sixty comments. I should, as a good friend advised, find my validation from within. double ha. She's right, but like all truths, it seems to fade like sky writing in the face of reality. "I am What I am" said my favourite philosopher, Popeye the sailor man.

And I am at work, but finished six of the nine "to do items". Before I decide whether or not to erase another, I need to get my OS fix.

So, for what they are worth, 10 more random musings for a Sunday morning:

  1. Spring has sprung (again) in Thunder Bay. Double digit (Celsius) temps yesterday, but still frost on the car this morning. The river outside my office is running ice free.
  2. I am so glad that mid sized B raked the front yard this week, without fan fare. I arrived home one day, it was done.
  3. I am equally glad that lil B and his chum have almost finished the back yard. It is especially nice that the chum, a regular at Hotel B, pitched in, because, as he put it "I owe you". Niiice.
  4. I like the quiet of the office on a Sunday morning. I tried coming in Saturday afternoon, but the noise level was distracting.
  5. It took over an hour to straighten my office, and there are still areas that could be improved. Need to get on top of this.
  6. A neater work area would help me concentrate better.  This matters because I dithered away st of Thursday and Friday not focusing. Thus the way too long task list today.
  7. Cleaning itself focuses me. How odd.
  8. I am an odd balance point between satisfaction at ruling off six tasks, and fear that one of the other three will rear up and bite me in the a...
  9. Yet another Sunday when I avoid going to church for no good reason, yet feel spiritually renewed by even considering it. Think how renewed I'd be if I actually went!
  10. What shall I cook for supper  tonight? The decision would be easier if I wasn't running Hotel B. I don't know if we are three, two, or more tonight. I do know we had steak last night, mid sized b is doing pork tomorrow. Did lil B's "too much chicken" comment yesterday rule that out today? Must find out what his game  plan is (besides biking til his feet fall off)....
Comments appreciated, on what to cook for supper, reasons I can give the kids that I bought a camera, religion, spirituality....etc etc.

Chili?

Good random thoughts and great kids.
Hmmmm...do y'all do fish? or soup? Those are usually my fall backs when the steak/pork/chicken cycle has been worn out. Oh my! Taco Salad! It's good for one or like 8: ground meat (turkey?), beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream. And if you're feeling fancy, raisins, cilantro, and coconut make it so very delicious.

I think that may be my longest comment in my OS history. I feel the same way about "thinking about" going to church. :).
Don't give the kids any reasons you bought a camera. Just get it!

Supper, (and I have to tell you that when I first keyed it, the word came out "summer") I guess with the hotel-like nature of your house right now, something that can be held and dished out at odd times would be right. Soup, stew, chicken stew like a coq au vin or hunter's stew (and it's in full knowledge of the "too much chicken" comment that I suggest this), pasta, or going the other way sandwiches that the kids can put together themselves.

I get the zen of cleaning although I still loathe cleaning. There can be a combination of spirituality with straightening out your work area that leads to restfulness and an ordered mind.

Consider my one thumbs-up as about one for each of your ten points and you're well on your way to sixty ratings. Of course, I could have broken this comments up into little bite-sized pieces but you're getting the more hearty English breakfast-type comment.

Be well today, Brian.
Your post has been validated. Finish cleaning your office and reward yourself and the kids by having pizza.
Janie: they are good kids. Parenting might be my best thing.
odette: mid size B tends to deconstruct chili, but its possible..hmm
MzEll: I do fish, like you to break the cycle, but need a good head count to buy the right amount
Leonde: meatloaf is not popular, but I'll run it up the line, see what reaction I get. would be a nice change of pace.
COS: I like doing stews, but done them twice this month, and mid sized B is more a casserole guy which lil B eschews...(sorry I just love that word!)
cartouche: lil B lives on pizza, hardly a treat. I avoided cooking Fri by ordering chinese, which lil B passed over in favour of.... pizza

If lil B decides he's off to his gf's, then maybe midsized B & I will eat out @ the pie place.... though since he works, he'll more likely just want to hibernate, as much as he likes pie...

thanks for the ideas. time to wake up mid sized B... and see if I can nail lil B down...
You've inspired me to go clean my office now.
Two ideas for the supper.

1. Sunday night Hashbrowns
Grate several large potatoes. Sprinkle red pepper, paprika, and basil lightly.
chop and sauté garlic and onion, set aside. (I prefer a wok for this.)
Place the hashbrowns in the pan. Add the garlic/onion back on top.
Brown to a crisp and turn.
Serve with marinated slice tomato.

2. Dice 3-4 tomatoes. Dice 1/3 of a melon (honeydew or cantaloupe), 1 cup strawberries, 2 green apples, 1 red apple. Chop fine- a clove (or two) of garlic. Add liberally--chopped fresh basil. Top with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. ( I use about 1/3 cup.)
Serve with a wonderful hard white-rhine cheese and a good cracker or melba toast.
it's 90 degrees here -- have trouble picturing frost. this is what happens in Nj -- turtlenecks to tank tops in 24 hours. OK -- how in the world did you accomplish #s 2-3?? amazing, really. and you didn't have to stand over them looking threatening? i'm in awe of your parenting skills. if you cook for your kids every night, they should just bow to you in gratitude. hell, i say you're due for a pizza night.
Good morning Sunday. bbd has a most excellent chicken lemon/sage recipe (http://open.salon.com/blog/bbd/2009/01/13/bbds_herb_and_lemon_roasted_chicken) that is so mouth watering good...

As for me, my Sunday started early after a refreshing sleep. Everyone was asleep so I headed out to the hot tub that looks out onto a field that is budding with new life. Read from a great book called "the untethered soul"...oh it's so easy for my soul to get tethered. Joy flooded over me. Then I went and had my car washed after some weeks of snow and rain. Another simple act that brought me ridiculous joy. So there there it is Brian. A cooking recommendation and some spirituality. Have a great one.
Sunday night if fajita night ... always ... ingredients vary, but it's become a fun tradition :) speaking of a game plan ~ Red Sox & Yankees tonight on tv (game of the week) ... now that's religion! :)

Thanks for some Sunday thinking :)
such a cavalcade of supper ideas, stellaa, mary, moms, cindy, scupper (I wish my kids were that easy!)...my mouth is watering... still waiting on lil B . we will be two or four... and two is too few to roast chicken, since Monday is mid sized B's cooking night...sigh

your days all sound wonderful...my spirit is overflowing. so is my ironing basket...on to it!
I live in chaos, and am really sick of it. But about the food...Since you had meat last night, and will tomorrow night, could it be a meatless night? Like tomato soup and grilled cheese? Or A salad with lots of veggies and white beans? Or if it has to be meat, how about fish? Tuna salad sandwiches? I make a mean tuna....; } Or tuna with cheddar melted? On some good pump. Or rye. Or really good rolls. Am I close?
Stellaa-I just read some of the comments-I love dishes too-huh! but don't get near laundry, which is why I am always scraping for clothes!
PPS -I have always loved your avatar, Brian B. I find it very peaceful.
Interesting list, Brian. As for supper, why not give yourself a break and just have toasted pbj's or grilled cheese, and carrot sticks. Fun once and awhile if you can get away with it.
I'm so jealous of your tidy office.

I'm going to do some kind of coconut fried rice curry thing, which I will improvise since I have no patience for recipes anymore. I'm sure whatever you cook will be great. Happy Sunday.
Lea, Juliet, annimal...thanks for the ideas, I'll save them for future reference...

lil B dithered til 4 pm, so it was bbq chicken with basil pesto pasta, an old reliable....
Rated for validation.
Suz.... merci beaucoup
What lucky kids they are to have a Dad like you! Sounds like you're doing a good job. I get this impression that you are caring and sensitive. As far as what to cook for dinner....I am so tired of my own cooking and that's why I'm always looking for and trying new recipes. I have found crockpots come in handy for the days I know I'm going to be tied up around "time to fix dinner" time.
LOL at #9. I feel this way about books too- I should get smart credits just for owning certain books, whether I've read them or not. That's how it works, right? Right?
Pat k : the crockpot is a handy invention indeed
JJ: I think it counts double if you read the dust jackets and can pretend you read the books.
