Happy Equinox, all!
Seems like just yesterday I wished you all a Happy Summer and now it's time to harvest the tomatoes. Yes, I did get tomatoes. No sunflowers though. *sigh*
We had a rainy August in God's Country. Great September though, thank you. What is no longer politically correct to call "Indian summer", though why it was ever called that, I have no clue.
I often tell people who ask such silly questions that Fall is my favourite season. To many, this seems odd. They expect me to say spring - the season of new life- or summer, the season of the sun.
To me, fall has always brought back fond memories of all the potential of the newness of the school year. Even today, 29 years removed from graduation, I still can capture that glow. Lil B starting his final year of high school and mid-sized B returning to university help revive the feeling.
I suspect this started in high school, but I can still recall clearly the fresh beginning of first year university - 1975. An opportunity to redefine myself. I made great friends, even in the first week - one of whom I'm still in touch with today - well, yesterday was the most recent email. Freshman year was a wonderful experience. And each September, it seemed to repeat again - if only because there was a new 'crop' of 'freshettes'. Yes- those were more innocent, less politically correct times. But great fun, none the less.
Every year I continued in school - five to start with plus one just for fun - I experienced a similar cycle. I wold return home for a summer of work and partying with the ever dwindling crop of friends. By mid August, my sights would be set on that return to school, the new beginning. And I was never disappointed. there were always exciting new experiences to enjoy, old friendships to rekindle, new friends to meet.
So I do not mourn the passing of summer. Instead, I celebrate the fresh potential of the new season. Tomatoes to harvest. A garden to put to bed for the winter. Renewed activity at work (summer is my slow work season). A clean slate on my social calendar.
Must do something about that...
After all, this post's title should have been "Fall is for falling (in Love)"

Good post B. Sorry about the sunflowers. But at least you got tomatoes. :)
janie - winter. yeah. you had to say it. There are about 6 weeks each year when I question why the heck I ever moved back here ...
Kathy - there's great drives around here - down Highway 61 or east along Superior - where the leaves are just magnificent.
Robin - why does your comment make me hear Mick growling "Tumbling Dice..." which is not a bad thing...

theo - we had enough rain in august...
What I mean to say is nice post. I love autumn, too.
Indian Summer happens to be the name of one of my favorite Doors songs. I'm not giving that up for anyone, however incorrect it may be!
