Falling for Fall

Rate: 7 Flag

Happy Equinox, all!

Seems like just yesterday I wished you all a Happy Summer and now it's time to harvest the tomatoes. Yes, I did get tomatoes. No sunflowers though. *sigh*

We had a rainy August in God's Country. Great September though, thank you. What is no longer politically correct to call "Indian summer", though why it was ever called that, I have no clue.

I often tell people who ask such silly questions that Fall is my favourite season. To many, this seems odd. They expect me to say spring - the season of new life- or summer, the season of the sun.

To me, fall has always brought back fond memories of all the potential of the newness of the school year.  Even today, 29 years removed from graduation, I still can capture that glow. Lil B starting his final year of high school and mid-sized B returning to university help revive the feeling.

I suspect this started in high school, but I can still recall clearly the fresh beginning of first year university - 1975. An opportunity to redefine myself. I made great friends, even in the first week - one of whom I'm still in touch with today - well, yesterday was the most recent email. Freshman year was a wonderful experience. And each September, it seemed to repeat again - if only because there was a new  'crop' of 'freshettes'. Yes- those were more innocent, less politically correct times. But great fun, none the less.

Every year I continued in school - five to start with plus one just for fun - I experienced a similar cycle. I wold return home for a summer of work and partying with the ever dwindling crop of friends. By mid August, my sights would be set on that return to school, the new beginning. And I was never disappointed. there were always exciting new experiences to enjoy, old friendships to rekindle, new friends to meet.

So I do not mourn the passing of summer. Instead, I celebrate the fresh potential of the new season. Tomatoes to harvest. A garden to put to bed for the winter. Renewed activity at work (summer is my slow work season). A clean slate on my social calendar.

Must do something about that...

After all, this post's title should have been "Fall is for falling (in Love)"

yes, that about covers it for me also. There is as much to love about Fall as there is to lament about the end of summer. Actually, I find something wonderous in each new season. Yes, even Winter.

Good post B. Sorry about the sunflowers. But at least you got tomatoes. :)
Falls must be gorgeous in Thunder Bay. I enjoyed your post.
Happy tumbling, Autumnal Equinox, Brian! xox
Beautiful descriptions of the fall. No surprise coming from you...I love the season too.
oh, this is lovely, bb. i adore Fall too. but new england fall, not oregon fall, which is all rain, all the time. so i'm living vicariously through you and your boys! god, they are growing up fast. that's a tribute to you, love, that you've maintained those early friendships. and i still feel like its' time to go back to school when the temps get lower too. love love lvoe and gratitude
thanks all.

janie - winter. yeah. you had to say it. There are about 6 weeks each year when I question why the heck I ever moved back here ...

Kathy - there's great drives around here - down Highway 61 or east along Superior - where the leaves are just magnificent.

Robin - why does your comment make me hear Mick growling "Tumbling Dice..." which is not a bad thing...

maryt- whats fall like in Colorado?

theo - we had enough rain in august...
6 weeks??? That's all? Sheesh, once we are past the white Christmas, I'm pretty much questioning it the rest of the way through.
janie - it's the -40 that gets me...which is usually mid January til late Feb- with balmy daytime highs of -20 Celsius (that's 0 F to y'all in Murka). Though the upside of global warming is that this is less predictable.
It's not politically correct to say "Indian summer" now? What if we're talking about summer in Bombay??? Gad.

What I mean to say is nice post. I love autumn, too.
uk: Bombay is now Mumbai...
Fall is beautiful but we have such a short summer in the north...and this summer we had so many cold rainy days...I am enjoying the changing and colorful foliage...Happy harvest!!
the leaves are late here, Leondre...
There's a lot to love about fall. Pumpkins and pumpkin spice ale, Halloween, sweaters and leather boots, pots of vegetable soup ...
fall is absolutely my fave season, a perfect mix of a bright sun and crisp air, a good reason for a long walk or a snuggle under a blanket, book in one hand, tea in the other. perfect time to fall in love brian -- go find her
Lovely thoughts. :) Autumn is my favorite time of the year as well.

Indian Summer happens to be the name of one of my favorite Doors songs. I'm not giving that up for anyone, however incorrect it may be!
Alpha...how'd I forget those? Thanks for adding them.

cindy- I keep hoping she'll find me - had all my best luck that way. but do need to be out there to be found.

maria- looove The Doors. amazingly, don't recall that song...must go in search of...
