The Villain – Dover

  mk_helpfulanimals

The Victims -  Moles, Baby Bunnies, Chipmunks, Birds

Dover, our Orange Tabby cat, is a critter killer.    To our delight and dismay, he is a beautiful, healthy adolescent cat with an extremely well tuned killer instinct.

We are a family of wusses living in first ring suburbia.  We can’t handle the trophies that he drags up to the deck.  We can’t handle the dazed and confused chipmunks that he spits out in the kitchen after we let out blood curdling screams, “HE’S GOT SOMETHING, AND ITS ALIVE!!!.’

We’re just not cut out for it.

So I came up with a solution.

KEEP him in the house.

Sounds simple you say?

Did you ever try to keep a cat who has had the savory taste of the outdoors, inside?

 Impossible my friends.

I, being a self described  animal whisperer, thought I was up to the challenge.

After one week of a feeble and yet valiant attempt, I conceded defeat.

Almost...

In desperation, I went online and found the very cool; Scatmat (a battery powered plastic mat that SHOCKS the cat when he/she steps on it.)

 Clever?

I thought so.      I strategically placed the Scatmat at the back door (his point of egress).

After spending $80 bucks and nearly electrocuting the entire family, including the hubby (not a pretty picture), the three dogs, and  my sisters, very shy, very quiet 2 yr old grandchild.

 I formally conceded defeat.

The cat was the only warm blooded thing in the house that DID NOT get zapped on a regular basis.   He figured it out after one encounter.   Unlike the rest of us scholars, he never touched it again.

Fast forward two weeks.

The cat now uses the front door

PS.  Below are a few more pics of his victims.

TY for visiting Wschanz.. :)
Reminds me of a story my brother told about a friend who was intent on showing someone how the new electro-fence he'd had installed to keep his dogs in the yard really wasn't all that shocking -- just a mild little buzz, he said. To demonstrate, he put one of the shock-collars around his own neck and intentionally walked to where the edge of the prop . . . AAARRRHGGHHHH! Said he thought he'd killed himself. . .

Cats are smarter than people or dogs, as your hilarious post proves. Cheers
Jeremiah, I've heard similar stories about people vs invisible fencing. I have a neighbor who has to pick up and carry his 90 lb. lab over his propery line in order to walk him. The dog so respects the zap factor, that he refuses to cross the line, collar or not.

Its quite amusing to see this guy carrying this huge dog down his driveway.. :))
This is great stuff! What a fun read.
R~
very funny stuff. How about one of those electronic mousies my cats have always loved them.
I enjoyed your story about your cat. They are smart but it took me a month to teach my cat to use an electronic pet door. It clicks when she approaches it. She is not afraid of it anymore. I had to get an electronic one because other critters wre coming in the old one. Especially possums and racoons. Not exactly ideal living conditions. For me anyway. The critters loved being inside.
Now that's a Cat's Tale!
We've always allowed our cats out since they were kittens. They're happier that way, I don't care what the school marms at the Humane Society says.

My wife's from Buffalo. I've had a play performed there.

Bernadine, Maybe they make "shock" bird, moles, chipmunks and bunnies. I'll stategically place them out in the yard. Maybe that'll teach him. I highly doubt it though. :)

Joy, MAWB, Judie, Scanman & Con, Thank you for reading and commenting.
this is so funny! it is perfect. thanks for sharing this great story!
Thanks Kathy. I hope you're enjoying your summer. :)
Wonderful. So silly, and you had a shocking experience. Damn, that one sounds like an arrogant orange ball of fur.
good, funny post. i love cats, even the ones i had that brought home struggling, wounded prey. i just made them take the spoils outside and devour them there. the electrified mat is a hoot, except maybe it wasn't for the humans that stepped on it. ;
Oh my...... very visual and very funny!

Yep, once an outdoor cat, always an outdoor cat. Keep them inside, for their protection - and yours. R
My poor cats are all inside kitties. One with just one eye and one to fearful to cross the stoop. With my big dog outside it is for the best. I loved your story! I have hit the back of my neck on an electric fence once....it really, REALLY hurt!
Femme, Natalie & Lunchlady, Thank you for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed my account of my kitty dilemna. Natalie, I agree with you, I would be much happier if he we could keep inside. We do live in the Northeast, so his outdoor season is short. He hates the cold and snow.
Yeah, the cats will get ya every time ;). I've loved and enjoyed all of my cats, but give me my dogs for letting me be the boss :D.

All of my own cats have been indoor cats - and not a one of them ever made a mad dash for 'freedom' if a door was open. I can only think that means they've been satisfied. That's the great thing about cats - their world is their world, whatever it consists of.

Rated for learning lessons from great teachers ;).
I can just see it . . . and thanks for the warning about the scatmat, just in case . . .
Seer & Owl, Thank you for your comments. A little update; I put a bell on Dover's collar to even the playing field in the yard a bit. Now constant jingling around the house is the norm. :))
I love that you are an animal lover like myself. Very funny post.
