Bio
During the last few months of my mother's life, cannabis was the only medication that helped her pain, neuropathy, depression and insomnia. As her sole caregiver, having safe access to medical cannabis through a dispensary in my home town was extremely important. Because of the difference it made in the quality of her life, and because my heart goes out to those that are denied this effective and safe medicinal herb, I am doing everything I can to help make cannabis medicine legal nationally.

DEA raids on medical cannabis dispensaries OVER says AG

Rate: 10 Flag

Medical cannabis patients and providers breathed a sigh of relief, on Wednesday, when US Attorney General Eric Holder promised an end to DEA raids on Medical Cannabis Dispensaries.

About 25 minutes into a press conference to announce the results of Operation Xcellerator, a crackdown on the the Mexican Drug cartel, Sinaloa, there were 50 seconds which are destined to bring joy to the hearts of numerous medical cannabis patients in the 13 states where it is legal.

This was the exchange, and it was explicit

Q. “. . . a second thing on Drug Policy: right after the inauguration there were some raids on California medical marijuana dispensaries. Was that a deliberate decision by you, by the Justice Department? Is that a prediction of policy going forward? Do you expect those raids to continue despite what the president said during the campaign?”

A. (Holder) “What the president said during the campaign, you will be surprised to know, will be consistent with what we will be doing here in law enforcement (general laughter). He was my boss during the campaign. He is formally and technically, and by law, my boss now, and so, what he said during the campaign is now American policy.”

What impact this will have on the dispensary owners who have already been Federally prosecuted and convicted, and are now serving time in Federal prison, or who are awaiting sentencing, as in the case of San Luis Obispo dispensary owner, Charles Lynch, is yet to be seen.

Finally. monkey fingered.
AMAZING! A politician keeping campaign trail promises...and an Attorney General who recognizes the value of State vs Federal Law....It's like I woke up in Dick Cheney's Twilight Zone!
Cali suffered the worst under those misguided harassment raids....it must be a beautiful day there for sure today!
Thanks Brinna for the post!
It is a great day. I am so delighted!
Yes, Virginia, evolution is possible... and passable.
Great news, Brinna. I know how tirelessly you have worked on this issue. A first step, but a big one.

Monte
It's about time. Now, let's legalize it altogether.
I think Obama will receive positive feedback. Most polls show that 70-80% of people polled have no problem with Medical Marijuana even if they don't support all out legalization.

I am sure the talking heads at FOX will try and make it an issue, but even the viewers of FOX do not consider medical marijuana an issue and it will fad.

What need to be done is the federal law needs to be resend and allow each states to make their own decisions as to what level of deregulation or legalization they want.
Yeah!!! Thank God for this. I know you have worked hard for this. May the govt finally keep some promises.
Let's hope so! Thanks, Brinna. :)
Thank you, all, good people, for joining in the celebration.
if one ag can flip the switch 'left', the next can flip the switch 'right'. let joy be unconfined, save in two crossed fingers.
Brinna, you and I both commented on a Join Together Online thread regarding a recent UN report (once again) condemning marijuana. I would like to correspond with you, as our interests and concerns are similar. You can read more about me at www.saveberniesfarm.com . Email me (tracevu@bellsouth.net) and I'll share more about medical marijuana activism in New Mexico, Rhode Island and Tennessee. I appreciated your JTO post today and I hope you read mine. I believe there were four posts from me before an (anony-mouse) drug warrior started attacking me and his comments (and my response) were deleted. Hope to hear from you. If we never stop fighting, we cannot lose. We are the ones we've been waiting for.
This is so important. Thanks for this post. Another great thing about this new administration.
Change is never easy but oh what a victory! Thanks, generously for posting.
Al, you are right. Luckily, we have at least four years of the "left" position, and in that time, if we can get the laws changed, we will have moved a mountain.

Bernie, I remember your comments on JT. And what a goofball your adversary was. But then again, prohibition proponents don't have an easy time with either logic or facts. Also, just read your first post, and it was great! You are a very engaging writer, and I felt that I just met Miz Lilla.

Mary it is important! And I am thinking this will shift the dialogue in states that are trying to legislate for medical cannabis (NH and NY and NJ and Ohio and Illinois).

You are so right about change, suede. There is an old saying: given the choice of making a change, or giving a reason not to do so, most folks get busy on the reason.
