Right before our lawmakers is the health care reform bill. I have always been a supporter of universal healthcare in this country. Why does it seem to work in countries like Canada and England then it takes me back to the movie, "Sicko" by Michael Moore.
I have a feeling that Republicans are stalling things so that it will die a slow death. Of course, they are the main opponents of the bill. It seems to be a concern with Democrats and Republicans alike that they want to take more time to study its cost and benefits. They also are pushing for a delay until they return from summer recess in September. However, President Obama has stressed that he wants to have the final vote before August. Their argument is they don't want to act hastily because the end result could be very disasterous for the American people. There has to be some sort of happy medium for both sides. Our health care system is a mess and sorely needs an overhaul. This would be a good place to start.

obama will take whatever comes out of congress, because he saw what happened to the clintons. it won't be good, because a lot of powerful corporations and associations are making money from the current situation.
it will, however, be an improvement on 'nothing', which is the current situation for many americans.
"you get the government you deserve", has a corollary: you get the medical system you deserve.
The president wants a big package. The fear mongers want you to believe that government health insurance would be FREE and would smell like welfare.
There would be wisdom in passing the legislation piece meal. I mean why can't the U.S. government just go into the business of selling insurance, competing with insurance companies. Make that STEP ONE and get it within 90 days. I don't know what STEPS 2 & 3 should be, but space them 6 or 8 months apart next year after insurance companies have gotten a taste of competition from the big US.
I pay for health insurance from the Japanese government, and it has served me well. When I am no longer working, I think it might be free, but I don't really know. I do know that if I moved my wife and child (acquired here) to the U.S., all 3 of us would have zero coverage.
