The Kennedys did some of the best philathrophical work ever. Much of the time they have been recognized far too much for the scandal and havoc they wreaked. She founded the Special Olympics in 1962. It started in her backyard as a summer day camp. Having a handicapped sister made her sensitive to individuals with special needs.
She often lived in the shadows of her brothers, Jack, Robert and Ted. Eunice chose to shine in her own way, through being involved with the Special Olympics and fighting for better treatment of the mentally-challenged. Years ago when parents found out their child was handicapped, they were put in institutions and forgotten. Her sister, Rosemary was given a frontal lobotomy at age 23 and institutionalized.
She changed the way how mentally-challenged and handicapped were treated and cared for. They became part of society instead of being hidden away like a dirty secret. They became contributing members of society and competing athletes.
