I shall miss her great arms of shade.
If a tree falls in the forest... I'll bet you probably heard this one, Buffy. Now you will have a spot of sun to sit in as the air warms. Looks like you have other shade, what a woodsy paradise you have there. You can think of her as you enjoy the heat of her core this next winter.
Friday and Saturday night's rainstorm was awful. I thought the wind was going to blow us all down.
Sad to see trees fall like that.
Sending hugs to you and the tree
Oh so sad to see you losing such beauty, and an old limb, as an old friend. Love your house and beautiful vines and flowers, I remember the picture, please let us know how it all turns out later in the season. Hope all is well with you..omg my cat, Olivia, just kissed me on the lips! lol (That is a first!)
At least she didn't have to wither and die like too many do. I am sorry for the loss.
Aw crap, Sheila, I remember that old tree very well from my visit to your beautiful home. I stood under its welcoming arms and enjoyed its shade and it is sad to know she is gone now. I hope the damage to the pool house was not too bad and I'm thankful you were not injured.
trees seem almost inert when they have no leaves, but this reminds us that they are very much living things.
I like your house! That aside, count yourself lucky. That beautiful old tree, could have smashed your house. I recently passed over one of my dream homes, simply because it was buried under huge old oaks. One good storm, and it could become history and me, if I was inside!

Old oak trees are nice, so long as they are a good distance from your home. This coming from an old landscaper. Oaks may be majestic, but they fall like a ton of bricks.
Very sad to lose such a beautiful tree--I am glad that the damage was light.
Oh, what a beautiful tree - so sorry. But... love your house!
What an awful tragedy but yet again proof we have little or no control over nature.

Hoping there'll be no more troubles at the ranch for a long time to come. Love you.
Very sad and real. She looks like a corpse. RIP. And glad it didn't hurt anyone on the way down.
my god it looks like you live in a forest. yeah, I share a deep love for trees. The cherry blossoms will be blooming next and I'll be there.
striking photos. The force of Mother Nature is awe-inspiring, isn't it?

This makes me cry. We have a lot of trees on our property & I love every one of them & every time we have a storm, it seems we lose one. Eleven years ago we lost one very similar to yours & while my husband trimmed off the branches, we left most of it whole on the ground where it fell. Since then we've seen it become a feeding place for baby hawks & a climbing spot for grandkids. Squirrels scramble across it & cats bed on it, so that even in death, it's still a part of the environment. (We were lucky -- it didn't hit any part of the house or outbuildings!) It HAS made me recognize that, like you say, Mother Nature Speaks. And that everything & everyone dies. I'm not sure why, but this is bizarrely comforting.
With people cutting down trees left and right, it's a shame a tree that was wanted had to die. But like everything, I guess it was time!
Almost like losing a friend. My condolences, Sheila.
Wow. It has been wet in California. Looks like you have a great spot. Trees are dearly missed.
Thank you all. I just had two different estimates for removal...ugh, as usual it is expensive. I am going to make a table from a piece of the base, seems only fitting to keep a part while the rest will be mulch for the gardens and cords of firewood which will help to heat my home since there is no heat. I hope we have enough non rain days to get it done this week.
Poor, beautiful tree! It's good that you were able to appreciate her.
I am touched by your photos and your words of appreciation for this beautiful tree. How sad and how beautiful. rated
i can sympathise. I'm losing an old red bud because the cats have torn the bark off of too much of the trunk.

what will the sculptor in you turn this wonder into?

I see a few things.
I guess to look on the bright side - it didn't land on your new roof
Ahhhhh Such an enormous tree. Traumatic. So sorry for your loss.
I am not a tree expert, but I suspect some voodoo play. Sorry about the loss, Buffy. R
She looks like she was a noble one. All honor to her.
I am so sorry for the loss of that tree. I would have tried replanting it.
Love this house and would like to live there.

Love this house and wish I could live there.
