Come Fly With Me...and Sail too!

Rate: 16 Flag

There are few things like going to visit Mom, and when my husband said it was time to visit his I was ready.  I had already met his mother over Mother's Day weekend last year and remember the lack surprise at how similar she and my mother's decorating style was.

Walking in her front door was a true de ja vu experience.  I suppose it was comforting on many levels, it sure made meeting her much easier.

This year it was going to be a little different, we'd buy her an iPad and I would show her how to use it.  We had a special purpose!

The flight was fun (as fun as flying is these days).  I took pictures as we flew and was loving the view from above.

I love the curvature of the earth in this one.

Humidity was making itself known.

I was reminded often I had to sit up straight.

Must be getting close to Houston now.

fly-6 Houston gloom
Oh yeah, urban sprawl.

Just about to land.

About an hour later we are in the driveway.

Mother and son reunion!

Soon it was time to begin the trip back home.  There wasn't much time there, but we did get to go have Texas Bar-B-Que, and the iPad mission was complete, even if not 100% satisfactory.  There are Windows People and a comfort level with it even I couldn't overcome.

Homeward Bound-9
Heading home two days later.

Snow in the mountains above CA as we approach the airport.

I'd been wanting to go to Catalina on the boat for more than a year. Fourth of July weekend I looked at the upcoming ten day weather forecast and it was going to be great sailing.  "We're going to Catalina!!"

Marina Del Rey

On Wed. I drove down to Marina Del Rey so we could take off on Thursday.

land ahoy

After leaving Thursday morning and sailing a few hours we approached the Catalina coastline.  The white rock is "Bird Rock", for obvious reasons.

Soon it was time for my big day...snorkeling!  Time to suit up!

A sunset in Catalina is magical.

On the way home this scene seems a fitting ending!

For some reason my video ending isn't showing up. Sorry!
Now it does! Go figure!
Bitchin' Chronicle Sheila. Funny, I've been looking at a lot of sailboats lately. Is it crazy for a landlocked southern Illinois boy to miss the sea? Part of me wants to just hit the ocean and go where the wind takes me. I don't want to go alone or anything, I'd just like to explore the world from sea level.
This was so delightful!!! I truly felt as though I was there with you two! Beautiful pictures. Your new Mother-in-law looks so sweet and healthy for her age (assuming she's in her 80's). I loved her smile.
Thanks for sharing your happy times. That is life as it should be lived. I've been that happy many times. Making memories is what it is all about and being family. Enjoy!
I've been wanting to sail....thanks for taking me on your trip!
Looks like it was a wonderful trip. Great photos. Thanks -R-
An enjoyable journey, thanks!
I could actually smell the sea air on the ending video, Shelia. Great pictures - GREAT boat. & such a good looking couple
The familiar sights from US planes and the sounds of the sea make me want to start my own trip all over again. Think I'd pass on the snorkelling however. You're braver than me for sure.

Pleased you're getting out and about and hope it helps relieve other pressures. Lovely photos and video. Love you.
Looks like a fun way to spend the day.
Great pics! I'm inspired by your adventurous spirit! (Although your avatar is gone!)
It all sounds like a great time and I admire your bravery. I would be terrified to fly and the ocean, which I love, scares the crap out of me. You seriously rock and I love the ending video how many sea lions fit on that buoy?
Sheila, thanks for sharing this with us. Looks like you are enjoying life!
To think, I just bought a land locked trailer in a campground. I probably could have bought a sailboat instead. I had forgotten about seeing the world once more.

That video really made me think I was out on that boat with you. How do those seals sleep with that bell clanging all the time? ;-)
Lovely trip. Makes me want to check out some of the elements other than dry land.
Your happiness is infectious, Sheila. Loved the mood of this, the fascinating photos. Your mom-in-law is cute and sweet (she even resembles you a tad, in the photo anyway). I'm not a water person, but you guys make it look so inviting.
Gosh, you're having fun! Cute sketch of the fish's interpretation of you snorkeling.
great pictures! thanks.
Long time no see, Nada/Buffy/Sheila... It was so nice being able to catch up on what you've been up to since Lance's passing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the house, the cruise, the new beau, the wedding. Congratulations and best wishes to you both!
Wonderful post! You look so happy!
xoxo
Oh, how gorgeous...
There is a special fondness in my heart for any sailor type. : )
I found you by way of bobbot.
Happy birthday!
