My O'Reilly spin (Or: How to remix online video)

Rate: 15 Flag

So I’m a little dizzy from trying to respin the spinmaster, but I gave it a whirl and here’s what I came up with. (You can play too, read more here)

I haven’t been able to find an easy to use online video mixer yet, so I used Snapz to grab footage and edited it on my computer. Snapz has a trial period long enough for this contest, but ultimately it’s a program I own and love. You can import the files into iMovie and cut them up. If you’re having trouble with the Snapz compression, open the file with your Quicktime player and export the file as a “DV Stream.” This helps to cut down on the rendering time when you edit.

Also, it looks like Crooks and Liars has some O’Reilly footge up on its site as MP4s, which can be easily downloaded and imported into your editing program.

Thoughts on editing software-- If you are on Vista, you probably have Movie Maker 6. On a Mac? You have iMovie. There are several online tutorials that you can follow if you need help getting started. Finally, here’s a link to a free video editing program, Video Thang, which on first glance seems accessible and fun.

My biggest challenge was keeping the video simple, Kerry reminded me that it’s better to keep things short and to the point. So even though I love the idea of incorporating some of the awesome old timey public domain clips from the Prelinger archive, it’s okay to just focus on one idea. Mine: show that O’Reilly doesn’t, um, listen. (That said, I think next time I'll use as many wacky video effects as possible!)

I had a pretty good time pulling this piece together. Now I can take a breath and get my balance back.

Kerry has more on how to add your spin here.

Thanks, Caitlin. Hope video newbies find this useful. Remixing the Masters (O'Reilly, Beck, Hannity, etc.) is an addictive hobby!
good for you for posting instructions! i learned how to do this when we got our mac last year, but i don't remember which program i use to snag footage (maybe tubesock? i really don't know anymore!). can't wait to see your video!

additionally, i have imovie08, which everyone complained about. if you are still using imovie08, this means you're entitled to download imovie07 for free (or it used to, i don't know if they still do this or if they're only offering 09 at this point)... which has all the video effects on it: fast, slow, backwards etc. those bells and whistles are half the fun!
Great job Caitlin and thanks for sharing the knowledge. Appreciated.

This was great... Yes, I tried grabbing the dang video and couldn't figure it out.
Thanks, Caitlin -- that's really what it felt like!
This is really helpful. The Prelinger archive is a real gem.
awesome! that captures quite a lot of the feel.
Great job Caitlin! Love the pacing.
Thanks Caitlin! I am new to video editing and have been eager to try the iMovie program on my MacBook Pro! Just what I need, another way for me to occupy hours and hours of my time! It's going to be rainy and gray for the next two days, a perfect project after 30 days straight of 16+ hours of sunshine (a record for us here).
I just wish so, so much that when Michael Moore was on his show and "got in his face", basically calling him out, Bill had had the balls to take a swing at Moore. But the "ball-less wonder" refused, of course.
So funny if it weren't so sad.
thank you for all the great tips
this should be fun
Typifies O'railly's treatment of guests whose opinion he doesn't agree with!
I admire your ability to do this but it's beyond this old gal and the clip didn't play for me????
Comment too -- I need a deep breath whenever I hear this guy.
