For nearly two years it's felt like I fell into a black hole and there was no way out. Since losing my job in May of 2009, I had come to the conclusion that there were no jobs to be had in my industry and that I would have to make my own job.
I tried to do just that by getting trained to be a Certified Home Energy Auditor and I purchased all the necessary equipment to get into business. I discovered that, dispite being told that energy conservation was the wave of the future, there is really not a market for Home Energy Auditing.
The reasons are many and I'll save that for another post but the bottom line is that when people spend a few hundred dollars on thier home, they want shiny farkle to show for it despite and Energy Audit's potential to save a homeowner 30% or more in home energy costs. It doesn't help when you have to compete with subsidized state programs and with other non-profits using stimulus money to keep their own people working.
Anyway, with my unemployment benefits nearly at an end, I not only got a job but got the perfect job for me with a great company, Lynden International, who I worked for for 10 years. Lynden is easily the best company I've ever been associated with and I cannot tell you how happy I am to be back in the Lynden family.
I'll be working in air export operations in the PDX office. The local station has a lot of things going on and I expect to find a lot of opportunity as my career progresses.
As unglamorous as it sounds, this is what I do. I'm a freight forwarder and I couldn't be more pleased to resume my career where I left off over two years ago. It's what I do. It's who I am.
I can't overstate what this means to the family. We've managed to keep up with the bills, thanks in no small part to my wife's hard work with dog breeding but we were weeks away from not being able to make the mortgage. It is not an exaggeration to say that this job saved our home.
I hope that this is a good sign that the economy is turning around for all of you who are still looking. I've found diddly squat in nearly two years and then had two meaningful interviews in the last week and one offer which was. frankly, better than I was hoping for.
Thank you universe and thank you to all my family and friends whose support has helped us through these hard times.

I give all credit to your change in rank!
Majors are just lots cuter than rusty-dusty ol' captains. Heck, lots'a companies got boxes full of leaky-creaky ol' captains under the tool bench.
I bet yer just gigglin' and squeakin' now!!!
Just don't fergit to start training for your next job NOW!! You already KNOW how things are going and that there will, of necessity, BE a "next" job, don't ya? The future is here. Six careers per lifetime - at a minimum!!
Remember the Boy Scout motto........

.
All the best to you and your family.

Congrats on the new job and it is nice to hear that you are going to something you used to do and sounds like you liked doing it, makes difference.
I can so relate on the falling into a deep black hole with no way out insight. I have been there for 2 yrs and 3 months now, June 2010 my unemployment did run out. I haven't drowned yet, that is me just waving in the back ground as I cheer you on.
It will and has to get better soon.. I hope..

Very happy for you - and ppfffttt.. to unglamorous! Getting that freight of whatever kind it might be to it's intended destination is of paramount importance (ask someone who's package went missing into the ether ;). Congratulations on securing an increasingly rare critter :).
Rated for near-ending my day on a happy note.
