We do those other modes too.
It's been a little over two years since the GWB economy bit me and mine HARD right on the ass. That's two years that I hope never to repeat.
I've considered a lot of options to find my way out of the abyss and tried a few. I was pretty pumped about joining the green movement when I got Certified by BPI as a Home Energy Auditor and made a not insignificant investment in training and equipment. I soon found that all this rhetoric about a green economy has not, at this point, moved past rhetoric.
It seems no one is willing to actually part with their hard earned cash for an energy audit, despite the fact that they will get their investment back many times over. The only real market turns out to be the low-income gov't subsidized market, which government agencies have pretty much sewn up and from which they have managed to exclude the rest of us. I'm not sure that's how the programs were designed to work but it is the reality.
My local paper did a front page feature on my energy audit business which netted me the one and only inquiry I've ever received for my services: some old fart who thought half-price was too much and really wanted my expertise for free. This same old fart had already wasted $12K on windows he didn't need but thought that $200 to find out what he really did need was about $180 too much.
I'm on all the energy audit forums so I know that my experiences are pretty much universal. I moved on.
You may have seen my post from late March of this year in which I rejoiced in having landed a job in my field, air freight. Well... that didn't work out. It lasted 8 days. I'm not at liberty to say what happened so we'll just leave it at that. It was what you're probably thinking it was.
When that gig went south, I did realize that I should be doing what I do, what I know, what I'm... if I do say so myself... damned good at: Air Freight. Just not for anyone who thinks my personal life is their business.
I started talks with several air freight forwarders regarding becoming a contract station owner. For those of you not familar with the business, this is pretty much how air freight forwarders work: they have a network of contract stations that are all individually owned by the people who run them. The job from March was with a contract station for Lynden Air Freight.
Anyway, I'll spare you the boring details and get to the point, so let me just say that I am pleased to announce that Global Trading Resources, Inc. and my company, Top Dog Logistics, have agreed to a deal in which I will own and run an air freight forwarding operation in Portland, OR as one of the services offered by GTRI. The new operation will do business as GTRI Air Cargo and operations are set to begin on August 1, 2011.
The beauty of this deal is that GTRI used to be in the Air Freight business (they primarily do customs brokering) and got out of it when their Air Freight guy left a year or so ago and they discovered that he left the TSA compliance stuff in disarray. They have been getting requests for air quotes to the point that they decided to get back into it.
I heard about their delimma through my industry contacts and a deal was soon eventually struck. And let me say too, that I am very impressed with Patti and her whole crew at GTRI. I think this may be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
If it's true that freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose, then good gawd a'mighty, I am one free mofo. Like any business, it may not work. If it doesn't, we're living in our 1968 15' travel trailer and that's not much of an exageration. Thing is, we already have one foot there but at least this way if I go down, I'll go down swinging.
This is what I do and it feels right. Only time will tell.

You did the Ass-smack on your boss one too many times?
Awesome!! :D
Seriously, my friend, congrats!!! I'm seriously thinking about hanging myself out in the back yard in the ole Weeping Willow as of right now, I'm too young to be a Walmart Greeter and seemingly too old to do what I do which is to break computers and then sometimes fix them.
(I'll go down swinging too!! see? :D)
Seriously, congrats!!! RATED (And no, I wouldn't want to relive my year and so many months off the workie --- can only watch so many soap operas before you begin crying ---"Yes! Yes, that's my storyline/luck too!" :D)
Thanks, Cathy. At least this time I know what I'm doing... mostly.
I'm rootin' for ya Cappy.
Tink, we'll put you up in the travel trailer until we need to move in. The roof only leaks a little and what's a little mold between friends?
~grin~
Maybe it's (the reason I mentioned) that during these last two and a half years we've been walking through the same obstacle course here in the forest of the fucked up that we call the post Bush US economy.
Nice legacy George Jr! Two ridiculous and immoral wars while cutting taxes for your buddies.
Wars paid for with borrowed money (remember, he inherited a nice budget surplus), then the coup de gras, the $800 BILLION Wall Street bail out while exiting the door, leaving this nation that was doing just fine before he was "elected" in a state of paralysis.
We all know the rest of the story. Your story. My Story. Tink's too, and so many others who took it harder, much harder (in the ass with no vas).
May your road be paved in yellow bricks. Mine too. It's hard out here Major.
I have dealt with a lot of freight companies, and customs, it can be really hectic at times, and down right crazy to deal with, well on my end it is anyway..
Happy for you Cappy...
We will all make it out of this mess that hit almost 3 yrs ago..
Huge hugs

That is why I am in China now (was here first in 2004). I love my new job, city, apt. and dog. My family was skeptical, but now are big supporters. From the Chinese POV, older is wiser and therefore more valuable. You are too!
seriously you deserve a break today
deliver & forward well.
Advertise it as 'Indoor water feature' you could probably rent it out as high living condo!! :D
C'mon down, monkey. We'll make it a party.
Buffy, that's about the time I started in Air Freight.
Thanks, Trudge. Now, which is your weapon and which is your gun again?
Tr ig, I think about you too but I'm totally straight. Okay, mostly straight... And yeah, thanks a lot, Jr.
Thank you bbd, and yes, I will
Matt, forgot about GNS. I think it's "break a wing".
It can get crazy, FE. When my underlings get frustrated with problems, I always tell them that if everything went like it was supposed to all the time, they wouldn't need us.
Candace, I'm over the green thing. I have a passion for this business that I never had for the green biz.
Kate, I'm so glad to hear that things are working out for you. That's a bold step you took but my, what an adventure!
I simply thank you, J, though I am still a little bummed that you are cheating on me with that other guy...
Tink, Imma take a picture of your new home and put it on FB.
I appreciate the kind words and thoughts, grif.
Charlotte, er, Scarlett, I know what you mean. Seriously, I give the best customer service on the planet. I am very hopeful of cashing in on that now.
Right back atcha, Scandude. You're one of the good ones. I hope I don't do so well that I have to become a Republican. You're right too, Tinker needs a break of the good variety.

Any entrepreneur can tell you that a "good idea" goes nowhere just because it's "good". Think about it. Stopping war is a good idea. It gets lousy press. Going to war is a bad idea, but it is capably marketed. You know which we do, don't ya?
I expect that you know the freight forwarding business so well that you already know how, and to whom, you ought to "market" your service.
If Tink has a brain in his head, he'll take you up on your offer. Just about the time he has learned enough about freight forwarding from you, you'll be needing someone with his skills in computer stuff who also knows something about freight forwarding; and how many guys have that kind of dual knowledge?! What a team you two would make!
Go for it buddy! It only takes 180 hour work weeks and two drops of blood for every cent you make; cheap at half the price!

l'Heure, i hope it takes. god and me aren't on the best of terms.
Now get out there and air freight something already!

(Arrest warrants too!! Who knew it was illegal there to call the governor a homo-erectus!!!! Sheesh!!! ~boohoohoo~)
;)
any good news in these hard times for anyone is great to hear about.
Good luck and more good luck to you and yours dear.
and let us know how things are going for ya dear...;)
I hope this works. I'm scrambling too. My part time employer just sold out to a major Chinese company last week. Poof. Job gone.
We are all going through different versions of this.
I just dig in, and keep going. May not be getting anywhere though.
