Grew up in Queens, NY, where I was told by Vice Principal Valencia of PS22 that I had all the answers, which was a lie. Sought answers in NYC and Paris, degrees in Liberal Studies (major in Fashion Design), Modern Letters (minor in Linguistics), all nine years of which led to this answer: cartoons. Regular contributer to The New Yorker and the Huffington Post and my own blog, newyorkette.com. And, of course, working on a book.
Well now, when saints start running for office, just let me know! Would you prefer cartoonists to run the country? I can assure you it would be a disaster! :)
Children don't need to be shielded from politicians. They need to be shielded from their corrupt principles and teachers (I could tell you stories of rampant institutionalized cheating!), and a lot of the time from their own abusive or neglectful parents. It might make some of the less fortunate children out there feel good to know that the head of our country actually cares whether they graduate or not, since their parents obviously don't. If they're the only ones helped by Obama's speech, then he won't have failed, whatever anyone else thinks of it.
What really made me laugh about the whole thing was people actually think school kids were going to be paying attention. I guess they forgot what school was like. I know every speech I had to sit through became background noise as I drifted off to my own little world.
