This appeared originally on the Huffington Post, in honor of my hypochondria. But I have a real cold or flu or whatever right now, and been spending all my time sipping soup or blowing my "dose."
So I'm reposting it in honor of everyone out there who is suffering the same.

First, swish a solution of cayenne pepper dissolved in warm water around your mouth, if you can, hold it for 30 seconds under your tongue. Swallow. Then place 2-3 drops of essential oil of oregano under said tongue. Hold. Swallow. Two nights ago it cut my cold symptoms in their tracks and gave me my first night free of allergy related asthma for a week.
I also smell beguilingly like a good pizza.
Yesterday morning I repeated the remedy, and twice more through the day. I have some nasal symptoms, but nothing like the three-box of tissues a day kind of stuff I usually go through. I'm pretty sure I got the bug just as it was setting in, and I don't know if it would have been as effective with the full blown body fluid running down the face type of thing.
The cayenne pepper treatment is a known vaso-dilator trick which helps herbs and medicines get into the blood stream quick. It's also a natural anti bacterial.

3 leeks
1 large onion (or 2 small ones)
two large potatos (or four small ones)
cut all into 1 inch chunks
cover with water, and then some in a large saucepan/pot
cook covered till it boils, then uncover and turn down flame to low/medium for ten minutes (or less, if you like your leeks greener).
It's ready when the potatoes are soft enough to eat.
Ladel it into bowl(s), add a small slab of butter, salt and crushed pepper, and eat.
The key is adding the seasoning to the bowl, not the entire soup.
Makes the whole house smell yummy, and tastes great. Can be done from start to finish in 20 to 30 minutes. And it's cheap! And good for you!
I had really bad tonsilitis once, I was a mess, it just wouldn't get better, so painful.
Then my girlfriend at the time gave me a teaspoonful of valerian oil, which I guess is made from valerian root steeped in oil. Bliss, I just sailed away to dreamland. When I woke I was well rested and I'm sure that helped in my recovery.
Its powerful stuff, I'd say you would need to use caution in its use, get some advice, perhaps don't take it if you live alone.
But today, waking up just as bad, I must say I have a code.
Gonna try the cayenne + oregano tonight. I'll let you know if it works.
Meantime, keep 'tooning! You're really quite wonderful!
Wait, I don't have a sister!! Who gave me mine? :-(
