Part IV: Slouching Toward Heritage USA – Kingdom Government

And what was it slouching toward Heritage USA to be born?

"The greatest revival, awakening, or move of God in America's history," Joyner tells us. "If it is allowed to go its course and to do the work it is being sent to do…it will be a major gateway for the coming of the kingdom of God."

What was slouching in from the cold at Lakeland, as it turned out, wasn't the Kingdom of God, but, instead, old-as-time boozing and womanizing on the part of its flamboyant and unruly minister, reformed child molester Todd Bentley. With the revival tent shut down sans Bentley – who reportedly was seeking counseling from Rick Joyner – Fresh Fire Ministries looks to "identify vision-casters from within and to refocus the ministry’s endeavors."

Todd Bentley's failure to keep his fly zipped not withstanding, the basic message is that Lakeland was ground zero of the divine action.

"I was shown that there will be an undeniable testimony of miracles and healing," Joyner says in a Special Bulletin."The knowledge of the Lord is going to cover our nation…The Lord is obviously moving again in a very powerful way. When the cloud moves it is time for us to pack up and move with Him…

"I saw faith become a fist that punched a hole through an overcast of clouds. This was the demonic oppression over America. As the holes opened up, angels started pouring through them…Heaven is about toinvade earth. This is going to cause a great distinction to develop betweenthose who know and serve the Lord, and those who do not."

Needless to say, things will get bad for "those who do not," as Joyner explains:

"We must also understand that the gospel of the kingdom is not the same as the gospel of salvation. The gospel of our redemption and salvation is the foundation of the gospel of the kingdom, but it is far from the complete gospel. The gospel of the kingdom is…about the King returning, His kingdom coming to the earth, and His will being done on the earth as it is in heaven. The gospel of the kingdom is therefore about the salvation of the whole earth …"

Note how Joyner deftly inserts a new doctrine here: that in addition to the received gospel, there is another gospel -- or, revelation -- of "the kingdom...about the King returning." This is very like Joseph Smith's further revelation about Jesus' purported North American ministry, post-crucifixion.

Joyner fills in the details of this new gospel. Here's his description of Joel's Army, the the Kingdom's Revolutionary Guard, along with some specifics about God's preferred political organization.

"The first characteristic of this army that is gathering is that it is an army of the kingdom of God…[and] cannot be distracted from its purpose—preaching the gospel of the kingdom and preparing the way for the Lord. The Lord is not coming as a Republican or a Democrat, a liberal or a conservative, a socialist or a capitalist—He is coming as King!"

Right here Joyner lines up the pieces for a Reconstructionist bingo:

"The basis of every kingdom is that the king’s authority is recognized. Obedience to King Jesus is the most basic principle of living in the kingdom, preparing the way for the kingdom, and preaching the kingdom. Knowing His voice and obeying, are the most basic characteristics of those who would mobilize to be a part of the army of God.

"…in boot camp or basic training the first thing you are taught to do is to march together with others…this is basic to any military force: teaching recruits to listen to commands and obey them….All of God’s people need to know His voice, not just prophets, pastors, or church leaders. When in basic training, every person had to be keen to hear the commands when marching, or they would quickly be out of step…

"The ability to know His [God's] voice and obey Him is fundamental. As the army mobilizes and starts its training, those who do not know the voice of the Lord will stand out more and more. If this does not compel them to get to know His voice… in order to obey Him, ultimately they will be removed… The times that we are entering will be such that it will be a life and death matter to know His voice and obey Him."

And the end result? Kingdom Government of God, as Fusion Ministries, workers in the vineyard of what is called the Global Transformation Movement, explains:

"A neighborhood, city or nation whose values and institutions have been overrun by the grace and presence of God…A society in which natural evolutionary change has been disrupted by invasive supernatural power and a culture that has been impacted comprehensively and undeniably by the Kingdom of God..."

"For the term transformation to be properly applied to a community, change must be evident not only in the lives of its inhabitants, but also in the fabric of its institutions [often called the Five-Fold Ministry].  In the end, it is dramatic social, political, and even ecological renewal that sets these cases apart from common experience."

In other words, a town where you can't buy a drink, cigarette, or copy of Playboy. Here's what this transformational Invasion of the Body Snatchers looks like on the ground

"Rhonda [Hughley, Fusion's founder and director] will be speaking at the first Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast in the community of Nevada [Missouri]. The Mayor is a believer who is involved in the emerging transformation journey in the community and desires to use his time in office to establish godly activities in the community. We are trusting the Lord to bring many leaders from various spheres of the community to this breakfast and to encourage them regarding God’s promises and blessings He longs to pour out on their community."

While the Assemblies of God has not once, but twice, officially branded Latter Rain doctrine as heresy, these groups continue to gain following in AoG congregations, which are autonomous churches.

So where does this connect with Sarah Palin?

The short answer is, all over the place. Latter Rain groups and thinking are active in all the churches Palin has attended and been an active participant. Moreover, her personal spiritual confidant, Mary Glazier, is one of the New Apostolic Reformation's preeminent prophets.

The senior pastor of her current church, Juneau Christian Church, Mike Rose is a close associate of Rodney Howard-Browne, the international revivalist credited with introducing to the world the newest of apostolic gifts, Holy Laughter.

The church Palin grew up in, the Wasilla Assembly of God, has equally close connections.  "We believe God has called Wasilla Assembly of God to be a church that does not just walk in one area of ministry," says the church's website, "but that the five fold ministry would flow out of our church into the City of Wasilla and the State of Alaska."

There are close connections between Wasilla AoG pastor Ed Kalnins and Rick Joyner's Morningstar Ministries. Steve Thompson, Morningstar's head of prophecy at, has given prophecy seminars at Wasilla Assembly of God. Wasilla AoG's Master's Commission – a post-high school training program with studies in prophecy, intercessory prayer, Biblical exegesis, authority and leadership – has participated in prophetic conferences at Morningstar Ministries.

Here's Palin addressing the Master's Commission students in her own incomparably incoherent prose:

"The umbrella of this church here, where God is going to send you from this church….God has sent me from underneath the umbrella of this church throughout the state, and Alaska is all over the world map right now. There’s something going on in Alaska…we get calls in our office all the time from national media outlets and international media outlets just wondering what’s going on in Alaska. And I think there’s something going on here with where you all are going as Master’s Commission…graduates and what’s going on in the state of Alaska… I can do my part working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline…I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.

"But I can do my job there…but really all of that stuff doesn’t do any good if the people of Alaska’s heart isn’t right with God. And that’s going to be your job…. and we can work together to make sure that God’s will be done here."

Where did she learn that her job was to make sure God's will was done in Alaska? Probably from her personal spiritual confidant, Mary Glazier, who makes no bones about her view that Palin was miraculously elevated to the governor's office.

Glazier is a member of the Wagner's International Coalition of Apostles, as well as one of his inner circle, the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders (ACPE). She's also a state and regional director for Wagner's Spiritual Warfare network (as is well-known witch-hunter and Palin-anointer Thomas Muthee).

"I believe in warfare," Glazier told the ACPE last June. "We were given an assignment in Alaska, God gave us that strongman…. Thirty days before the election…a Christian man was called to throw his hat in the ring.

"His name was not on the ballot…And our group hit our faces and began to pray, give us a man of God. We began to shake that Gate of government.  Father you said this is what you are going to do. We have to have a Christian govern… and by a miracle he won by a write-in campaign by a landslide.

"But while we were praying for him there was a twenty-for year old woman that God began to speak to about entering into politics.  She became a part of our prayer group out in Wasilla.  Years later, became the mayor of Wasilla. And last year was elected Governor of the state of Alaska. Yes!  Hallelujah!  At her inauguration she dedicated the state to Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!"

Glazier finished her June revelation with this: "…God is going to cause something to happen out of the land of Alaska and it will sweep south and across because  Alaska is one of the global Gates on the earth. We are the Northern Gateway on the earth and the Lord is moving powerfully in this incredible, diverse, unusual, strange, prophetic, apostolic state."

Immerse yourself in this worldview long enough – the space of this essay will do it – and it's easy to see why Palin and her supporters expected to wake up on November 5, 2008 to the news that she was headed for the White House. It's certainly enough to make someone as ignorant, ambitious and self-serving as Sarah Palin believe that she's the second coming of Joan of Arc.

great narrative. Pentecostals remind me of those people who are hooked on multi-level marketing or on motivational seminars. They are convinced that they can bend reality, if only they believe hard enough. If they don't succeed, they will believe in the next thing that comes along.
So true -- it's magical thinking. It also reflects a pre-enlightenment model of reality: instead of empirical 'truth' -- tested by the scientific method -- 'truth' is determined by what fits the model of reality.

It also reflects a complete lack of comprehension of myth, metaphor and figurative language -- things the Bible is rich in.
