Update: I've been approved!

Rate: 33 Flag

Thanks to everyone who has worked on my behalf, the medical reviewers at Blue Cross have taken a second look at the case for proton beam radiation therapy and have approved my treatment.

I would like to thank medical advocate Jennifer Brokaw, my superb surgical team of Drs. Christopher Ames and Vidat Deviren, colorectal surgeon Dr. Emily Finlayson, and plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. William Hoffman, and the medical experts at Blue Shield who have made what I believe is the correct decision.

Now my wife and I can begin the planning necessary for this 8-week treatment in Southern California.

As a longtime Salon editorial staffer and a great fan of the "smart tabloid" style, I loved the headline placed on my piece, "Insurance Company to Me: Drop Dead." It was very funny and grabbing, as headlines should be.

But I also believed from the start that each individual at Blue Shield was working in good faith, and that once the medical facts had been carefully weighed, the right decision would be reached. My only concern was that under the enormous pressure of the job, these individual employees might not be able to give this complex and unusual case the scrutiny it requires.

I do fear for the fate of sick people who lack the communication skills, the research skills, access to media and the resources to call upon the necessary specialists to make sure that their cases get the scrutiny they deserve.

No matter who you are, you really have to fight for what you need. This will be true no matter what bill is passed by Congress. Healthcare is a limited resource and its distribution is handled by people who are working in a less than perfect system.

Some of us are lucky, indeed, to have access to media and expert advocacy. A just and compassionate society would make sure that all of us, especially those who cannot make the case for themselves, still get the treatment they deserve.

We should not have to fight for it, especially at the very time when we are most weakened and vulnerable. Unfortunately, our society leaves many to fend for themselves. No matter what healthcare bill is passed, we will still be on our own. It is up to us.

So glad to hear the good news-now go get healthy!!! Seriously, you are so true about people not having the ability to work through the health care system, especially with denials and appelas. I am an RN, and worked for an insurance company and had a rough time getting treatment for a family member. Let's just say that knowing the lingo and what is really covered helps a lot. It just took time and perserverance. I wish you well and keep us posted.
yayaya! Best to you! xox
Right on, Cary! Congratulations!
Speedy recovery. Rated.
Great news! Best of luck.
Fantastic news, Cary. Fantastic.
Congrats on your proactive response and your success. To your good health!
Great news. I'm always glad to hear about a human being beating the machine.
Good, very happy for you.
Grate news Carry, hopefully you'll be able to concentrate on getting well, you are a wonderful presence and your incredible letters are missed.
Wonderful! Keeping a good thought.
Excellent news! Best of luck!
What a relief to hear you've finally gotten the results you've deserved all along! I'll be sending the good vibes/prayers, etc. your way. We look forward to your eventual recovery. I'm sure all of us here will be rooting for you throughout your treatment and so on.
I'd also like to add here how health care is a NATIONAL resource, not to be parceled out on the rich, strong, or financially secure.
As this has been a personal crusade of mine for some time (5 plus years), I'll be looking forward to any further commentary you might add to your blog.
Cheerio, mate!
Here's to the power of technology and social media!
That's indeed good news. The best from now on to you. ~R~
Heal up, my friend! This is good news!
So soon? Usually these appeals take much, much longer. Amazing! And wonderful news. Heal and be well.
YES!

"I do fear for the fate of sick people who lack the communication skills, the research skills, access to media and the resources to call upon the necessary specialists to make sure that their cases get the scrutiny they deserve."

What a highly sad fact of health care in this country that we have to fight to have life-saving treatments at the time when we are most vulnerable. Most people don't have the access to media that you do, and while I am glad you were approved, I wish there was more that could be done to bring plights like this to people's attention so we could help each other the way we helped you.
What a surprise. Guess we won't need those details after all.
thank god! keep us posted and send pictures of the machine if u can it sounds cool. the more info that gets out the less people they can deny for treatment. we could post the pictures in our own towns, do you have this kind of tumour, this machine will fix it, dont let your insurance turn you down! good luck!!!
This is wonderful news! I have to say, I am amazed that the decision was reversed so quickly, but very happy that it was. Now you can put your energy back into healing again.
congratulations and good good luck!
Good news! You made my day. I wish it was a year's supply of chocolate or a new Mini Cooper that you won, instead of a radon beam on your bum.

I liked what you said about the insurance people wanting to well by you. You are right. What a challenging job they have.
Awesome news and awesome post! Thanks for spreading the word that yes, it is worth it to fight for the cause! You have, and won. Wishing you all the best in the next chapter!
"Healthcare is a limited resource and its distribution is handled by people who are working in a less than perfect system."

I have followed your posts, with my fingers crossed, re your denied access. I have been consistently impressed by the objectivity and civility that you have maintained in those posts. The above quote is an example. Now, I will keep my fingers crossed for your successful treatment. As Libmomrn says "...now go get healthy."
Best to you! If you are going where I think you are, it's the best.
That is great news, I'm glad to hear it! :)
Imagine that. These evil insurance people.
I just realized that my six year anniversary since treatment ended came and went a few days ago. I look forward to reading your work in six years:)
Keep fighting Cary! You blaze trails for us all.
How glad we are to know that you, too, will now glow in the dark!(survivor's joke)

This can get scary. Stay calm. Stay focused on getting through it. You can do it.

We'll be there with you, and waiting here for your return.
Great news, put a little lift in my loafers, and a smile on my face. I needed to hear some good news today and you provided it. As you are able, we would love to hear how it goes. Best wishes also to your supportive wife.
