A research study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal confirms what marijuana users have reported for years about the therapeutic efficacy of the drug:
"Smoking cannabis from a pipe can significantly reduce chronic pain in patients with damaged nerves, a study suggests."
Additional benefits included a decrease in anxiety, a lessening of depression and an ease in sleep. The significance of the study is that this is a pioneering effort in assessing the effects of smoked cannabis. The medical application of the cannabis was not applied in pill form.
There will be two consistent criticisms of the design paradigm of this Canadian study. The first is that the study did not include a large enough sample of people. The researchers included only twenty three people. The second variable that will be questioned is that the time involved is only suggestive of the long term efficacy of the drug.
Certainly the study gives strong indications that further empirical research is necessary. The challenge for researcher will be finding a means to determine what amount of the active ingredients is absorbed by the body in this type of delivery system. It is significant to know what amount of the cannabis is being used actively by the patient and what amount is going wasted and 'going up in smoke'.

(Sarcasm is not my strong suit, but y'all get my drift.)
Nice post, there is not enough reporting and too much propaganda being put forth on marijuana and other medically beneficial botanicals.

Now, emphysema, that's a different story...
Kate, the lung cancer question has been raised repeatedly and remains controversial. It is interesting to keep in mind the work done by Dr. Donald Tashkin from UCLA. In long term studies, he found no association and "even a suggestion that of some protective effect". There was a write up in the Washington Post: Study Finds No Cancer-Marijuana Connection:

Needless to say, the huge pharmaceutical conglomerated would find such data as controversial.
And I will try to address the low number of subjects for this study when I have a moment, later in the day. [Sorry, I am rushing here.]
Man these people need a head check. I think they are the ones that are stoned.
