Governor Rick Perry: Past is Prologue

Rate: 18 Flag

Since announcing his candidacy for the Office of President of the United States, Governor Rick Perry has generated much discussion with some media statements. He has suggested that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke may be treasonous and that "we would treat him [Bernanke] pretty ugly down in Texas". Are such statements simply errors of enthusiasm or is this a Perry style, even on a national and international stage?

On Governor Perry's website, the banner declares that he is the "Champion of Conservative Principles". On that website, it states that "Perry’s first book, "On My Honor" defended the values of the Boy Scouts from assaults by the liberal elite". Perhaps many citizen have been unaware that Boy Scout values were under attack.

In a 2008 interview with Deborah Solomon for The New York Times, Governor Perry explains:

"...  When you have a clearly open homosexual scout leader, the scouts are going to talk about it. And they’re not there to learn about that. They’re there to learn about what it means to be loyal and trustworthy and thrifty."

Does that mean that sexual preference has direct implications on loyalty, trust and thrift? If Governor Perry is concerned about such dangers to the Boy Scouts, would it not be a logical extension to worry about Girl Guides? Further, there should be an interest in children being exposed to a homosexual individual as a teacher, a baseball coach, a camp counsellor, a soccer coach and a myriad of other occupations and interests.

Pierre Trudeau, a former Prime Minister of Canada, was quoted as saying that "there's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation". The former leader of Canada said that in 1967. Now, over forty years later, Governor Perry's stance would put government directly in the bedrooms of the nation. The rational would be to protect children, such as the Boy Scouts.

In the same interview by Ms Solomon, Governor Perry was asked: "And instead of a shotgun-shooting merit badge, how about a gun-control badge?". His response was "now you’ve stepped across the line. Remember, you are talking to a Texan".

It seems that there would be freedom of choice for the Boy Scouts in terms of a merit badge related to guns. Unfortunately, there would be only a single choice.

Perhaps, for Governor Perry, past is indeed prologue. It seems that, while advocating for smaller government in people's lives, there would be a focus on the private activities of the nation's citizens. The justification would be security... the security of the children. It seems that Governor Perry's image of America is one where its youth are heterosexual and can shoot straight.

Governor Perry titled his book "On My Honor".

Smaller government, except when it comes to lgbt rights. Perry scares me. Thanks for posting this!
You know gays aren't loyal! Come on! (insert sigh of exasperation here) What "pride" some Texans have in being neanderthals.
I do not like him and we are in for one scary ride.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, and now this creep. Give me a break. I don't even like BHO but he looks like a peach compared to these dopes.
Thanks for this post. Aren't you glad you are in Canada?

One can only hope that some measure of intelligence rises within the American people by November 2012. I am one who believes in the audacity of hope.
Catherine, thank you for this roundup exposing Perry's hypocrisy. Great piece!
Saving the boy scouts from depredations versus $2.00 gas - this choice is getting harder and harder.
I think your take on the Texas gov is quite perceptive. Great post, Catherine.
Fear is always good for generating a few votes.

Gov. Perry keeps reminding me of John Edwards and it's not just the humble beginnings part of their life story.
This is very informative. Once you write, there's no pulling it back or saying that you were misunderstood. There it is in black and white, and you were edited!! I love your title: Past is prologue. This is how we should see EVERY candidate. What have they done?? What have they promised and delivered?? How will that change our future?? Well done, C.
Catherine: I can't wait for the debates! Say what you like about Obama, the man can speak without his toes hanging out of his mouth.

We given Texas politicans their fare share of prez time, Tinkertink is threatening to nuke 'em when he's elected prez.

VOTE FOR TINK! TINK FOR PREZ!
R. I call him, "Slick Rick Perry" and Rick "Black Cloud" Perry. When you get chance, please see my article comparing him and his supporters to what JFK faced 50 years ago, and how Perry very much resembles the character that Burt Lancaster played in the movie, "Seven Days of May," which Kennedy supported getting made to help him raise the nation's awareness about the threat from the right-wing:

Youse knows them gays are tryin' to destablize the world with their marriage and their acts like that dere Tink fella!!!

We's needs to stop the gay agenda, right here, RIGHT now!

Rated anyways, cause, I thinks youse use a goods font!!
As an Eagle Scout, I find it very difficult to support the BSA. My experience was one of little tolerance for anyone not fitting their ideals. Unfortunately, the core values espoused by this organization have been hijacked by the right wing, exerting their influence over the impressionable youth at their beck and call. Perry shows his true colors. God Bless Texas, they'll need it as long as he's at the helm.
Perry and his fellow conservative pretend Christians believe that government should stay out of their lives but when they are "government" they have the right to decide what everyone may do.....what liars and phonies and ....I am getting angrier and have to quit typing now, feel my blood pressure rising...
Yes! YES! Vote Tink for President...he'll nuke oil down to 12 cents a gallon!! Woooo!!!

Oh yes, and meet my Director of Coolness, SlantyBold!! ~:D
Ah yes, Rick Perry - Michele Bachmann with a Y-chromosome and a wrinkled face. Or, as Jim Hightower described him: George Bush without the intelligence or ethics.
OMFG! Is there something in the water in Texas? The air?

What is it that does this? How do people with an IQ in single digits get elected to anything higher than dog-catcher in Texas? (My apologies to dog-catchers)

“American values” of the Boy Scouts, huh. Yup, an organization that was founded by Lord Baden-Powell, a Brit, sure sounds just chock-full of “American values”!!!

Somebody ought to tell this dork that sexual orientation doesn’t “rub off” and kids with a gay scout leader won’t become gay because of that. Heck, if orientation “rubbed off” then “straight” would have rubbed off on gays years ago.

.
As one who has worked tirelessly to undermine the values of the Boy Scouts, I've had to admit defeat. Gov. Perry blindsided me with his stout defense and I'm afraid I'll just have to let them be. Maybe I'll re-orient to working to seize all their guns and amnesty all illegal immigrants.
In his next book, he listed seven Constitutional Amendments - seven! - that he wants to pass, change or repeal. And he believes in the Constitution! Though apparently only the parts he likes.

As they say, he's all hat, no cattle.
I am not a fan of BO but how the heck can the Republican party allow the nuts to take charge here? The truth is is that the best, the person who could really help lead the country, is more interested in caring for his family than throwing himself, or herself, into a dirty fight
