At the beginning of this September 2011, most Boston Red Sox fans expected to be headed to the post season. Then the Red Sox lost 20 of their 27 September games and were eliminated from post season play.
What followed will be part of baseball legend. There were rumours, for example, that some pitchers had a very casual attitude as the season drew to a close. There were allegations that some pitchers spent time in the clubhouse drinking beer, eating fried chicken and playing video games on days that they were not scheduled to pitch. Such allegations bring to question how focused the team was.
Then the changes began.
The Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona left. Francona insists that it was his decision to leave the organization.
Now the Red Sox need a new general manager too. Theo Epstein has left the Boston Red Sox and joined the Chicago Cubs:
"... Original reports have put the total compensation at between $15 million and $20 million, and the deal includes the Cubs picking up the conclusion bonus in Epstein's Red Sox deal, sources said.
Epstein has been to Chicago on two separate occasions to meet with Cubs officials, sources said. He was Red Sox general manager for nine seasons and had one year remaining on his current deal in Boston."
The changes to the Boston Red Sox have been dramatic. Following a memorable September collapse, the Red Sox continue to undergo changes. For some Boston fans, these changes are not only dramatic. They are traumatic. Francona and Epstein were regarded as key elements to the Boston Red Sox recent World Series success. Now they are part of Red Sox history and a new era begins for the Red Sox Nation.

If Epstein can get the Cubs a World Championship, after doing it with the Sox, they should immediately enshrine him in the Hall of Fame for killing the two biggest curses of all time.
- thanks for dropping by, Cranky!
One would have thought it could not get uglier than September's historic collapse, probably the single worst sustained choke in baseball history. But it has--much, much worse. The nation has declined from incompetence on the field to moral receivership off it.
