Remarks About Women from Herman Cain Do Not Fail to Befuddle

Rate: 20 Flag

"The first rule of holes: when you're in one, stop digging."

Molly Ivins

Republican candidate Herman Cain has been the focus of the news media because of alleged sexual harassment. Four women are linked to separate claims of past inappropriate behaviour on the part of Herman Cain. One would think that, in light of the intense media focus on his conduct, Cain would be sensitive to how his remarks are interpreted.

That does not seem to be the case.

Cain has showed his contempt for House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi by calling her "Princess Nancy". Whether Cain disagrees with Pelosi's political position or whether he has personal issues with this senior Democrat in Congress, such a comment is befuddling. Does it speak to an arrogance to the current maelstrom about interpersonal conduct or a simple bluntness to how such a remark may be publicly perceived?

The nightmare for any public relations firm does not stop there. When asked about Anita Hill, Mr Cain joked "Is she going to endorse me?". In 1991, Anita Hill made allegations that Supreme Court nominee, Clarence Thomas, had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct. This remains a contentious issue for many people. For Mr Cain to joke about it seems to be ill-timed, especially under the present circumstances.

Throughout this Republican selection process, Cain has stressed that he is a businessman and not a typical politician. Even as a business person, Mr Cain must realize that such remarks keep him as a focus in the news, for the wrong reasons. Perhaps, Mr Cain is just being himself on the campaign trail.

Yes, he is being himself on the campaign trail.

On one hand, that is exactly the problem.

On the other hand, that will appeal to a lot of his audience: the Republican primary voter.

Which is not the same, by a long shot, as the general voter he'll face if he gets the Republican nomination.
What about the remarks he made last week on a late night talk show when he was jokingly asked if he would hire Gloria Allred to defend his reputation. "There is nothing she could do for me, absolutely nothing," he said, the implication being that he did not find her sexually attractive...doesn't help his case any.
He's a terrible candidate all around, this stuff shows his lack of character. Thanks for posting this.
I wonder how many will find him, "refreshingly honest"?
I think Cain has a Jack Kennedy complex. But if Jack Kennedy were alive (and much younger) today, and in the White House, I think he'd be smart enough to know you cannot talk or think or act that way. The good thing is that Cain's candidacy will soon be a distant and foolish memory.
I thought we got rid of his mentality in the 80's. I used to have men I worked for do the kind of thing he did and act completely stunned that anyone found it objectionable. He is the worst kind of good ole boy, I am sure he and Clarence Thomas would get along if both weren't racists.

I think Cain is taking the "Humor" Route. It works - if you have certain other things going for you. Cain doesn't have other things to fall back on. When he jokes about Gloria Alread, Pelosi or Anita Hill - he's playing to the "Boys will be boys". Women today are way ahead of his game & it won't fly! R
The digging hole metaphor is quite digging.

I'm kinda amazed about the prevalence of this issue with all men in power lately. Maybe it's always been this way, and more women are finally talking about it.
*Perhaps, Mr Cain is just being himself on the campaign trail.*

That ^ yeah.

I'm growing more and more puzzled by the GOP selection.. if I were of a 'conspiracied' nature, I might begin to suspect that something much more insidious than simple idiocy was going on with the whole political scene..

But I'm not. Much.

Rated for something wicked this way comes..
All of them are bad but this chap just got a little worse than the others.
I do not care about people that lie and don't give a darn about someone else.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
As I've been writing in my Huffington Post comments, Cain and Conservatives continue to "high tech rape" Anita Hill and any other woman or "liberal" who dares speak out against sexual misconduct by Conservative men. Then they have the nerve to play victim and falsely portray themselves as being "high tech lynched." It's the old "omerta" philosphy of the mafia at work. Cain's success, in addition to being based on the support of the Koch brothers, is also because of his willing to openly support and express the white supremacist views of the base of the GOP/TP. When you get a chance, please check out my article on this phenomena. It's worth your attention. R!

"Cain has stressed that he is a businessman and not a typical politician."

Maybe so but sleaze is commonly found in both species.
He's likely just a sociopath, there's probably no fix, he's just broken. Sociopaths don't feel remorse, empathize or other normal human traits. He'll melt down as he's enjoying the attention, they're typically impulsive and reckless. Might as well enjoy the show and be glad he's not a psychopath instead.
The problem is that many men, like Cain, still don't take sexual harassment seriously.
I'm glad to see that "Mr Cain is just being himself on the campaign trail" instead of pretending to be someone he is not. I hope the more he "bees" himself, the better the chance for people not to be fooled.

You know, it's amazing who gets anointed as a successful businessman. Romney definitely was one. But then Cain could be the only person to run a company that screwed up pizza gets the label. Oh, and they were nowhere near bankruptcy when he was there.

If you want to talk about bankruptcy, the man to point to is Donald "I led four companies into bankruptcy" Trump.
The man is a pompous idiot! It is difficult to believe anyone is seriously considering him for President.
Better to be thought a fool and remain silent, than to speak and remove all doubt. -- A. Lincoln
Oh what fun the invaluable Molly would have had with the current crop of candidates!

Herman Cain does not appear to have the ability to self-edit, even to save his presidential campaign.

He is doing his best at being smug and proud of his ignorance, two qualities the Tea Baggers love. R
Calling sexual harrassment would be a compliment, he's a two year old having a tantrum when he doesn't get his way. He's a narcissist who just keeps stepping on his own dick...
