The New York Knicks may be giving their fans some hope this year. Super-fan Spike Lee finally may be following the Knicks in post season play. The Knicks may have a contender. Their possible starting line-up can match up with most teams in the NBA.
The Knicks aleady had offensive threats in Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. With the addition of Tyson Chandler, the Knicks have added an experienced defensive presence at center. Chandler has the defensive focus to erase some of the lapses that Anthony and Stoudemire may commit. Chandler may change the offensive oriented Knick culture and be vocal enough to inspire some denfense.
The front line of Anthony, Stoudemire and Chandler can score the ball and defend. With the addition of point guards Mike Bibby and Baron Davis, the Knicks have experienced ball handlers who can direct the offense and score from long range. The drawback to these two point guards may be that experience also equates to age. Davis, for example, has a long history of injuries and currently is recovering from a back problem:
"... He is coping with a back injury that could keep him on the sidelines for at least a month. His agent, Todd Ramasar, recently told Yahoo Sports that Davis would need 8 to 10 weeks to recover, which was widely viewed as a ploy to scare teams from claiming him off waivers. Other reports have suggested that Davis could play in a month."
The shorten NBA schedule of sixty six (66) games may work to the Knick's advantage.
The Knicks may not have the speed which Coach Mike D'Antoni likes to run his offense. However, with Chandler's presense near the basket, the Knicks may give up fewer points and become less reliant on a run-and-shoot offensive approach. The major concern may be the Knicks bench. Is there enough skill on the bench to give the starters a rest? And what happens when an injury to a starter happens?
For Knicks fans, the season begins with anticipation. Madison Square Garden is where hope happens for Knicks fans. This abbreviated season can be compensated with an extended, serious run in the playoffs. Knicks fans also know that, historically, this is a team which can find creative and imaginative ways to break a basketball fan's heart. At least this year it has not happened before Christmas. That's because no NBA games have been played yet.
