Kill Your Darlings

Kill your darlings.

                                -William Faulkner

School ended on Thursday and I have been working non-stop on my book. I send it to my reader on the seventh well before I leave to London on the 19th. So far I have had two sessions where I wanted to punch someone as I copy and pasted three different sections that did not fit. I printed out the novel at 250 pages and proceeded to hand correct them which is better than me tape recording them. Who tape records any way? The weekend was spent on my bed correcting and cutting away.  Worst part? Killing my darlings.

Most words are so dear to me and I researched things for hours. But they had to go. How did I murder them? Quickly and mourning them for a few seconds. It is true how attached you get to your creations. Each one is precious to me. Tomorrow I have to do more slicing and dicing. Say a quick prayer for my darlings.

A required pain. All editing is cutting. Praying for them all the same and congratulations on the book.
Rated.
Catholic, such a smart and true descriρtion on what else could be such an ordinary and unρleasant reality. But they are not actually killed..they will be your darlings in another book...Rated with best wishes with your book!!
Bye bye little darlings.
Do it quickly, cleanly...but remember there IS a God
who Remembers and
holds them dear, for possible
resurrection..
the UNCONSCIOUS.

those little darlings could pop back into existence
next yr, next bestseller......
Editing your own work is the hardest thing to do, but it has to be done to save the whole piece. Good luck with your novel. R
I know how you feel. Kudos to you for doing it though - I'm incapable of editing my own work; always prefer a third party to come in and make suggestions. Good luck with your book.
TY for your comments. I still have yet to cut today.
