I have to start by saying that I have a great job. Where else can you get paid great money to drive around all day and listen to the radio?
Because of the radio zones that I cross in a day, I'm like a lot of truck drivers, I listen to XM radio. I've noticed that it's not much different than your radio in your car other than all the music stations are commercial free. Now all the other stations are a different story.
“Ladies do you feel blotted today?”. That's a common line on XM. They are pitching a product that will removed the 5 to 25 pounds of waste “some experts” say is stuck to your colon like spackle or paste. Who are these experts?
Let's not forgot about the product that is going to enlarge that “special part” of my body. I already wear a size 13 shoe. How much bigger do they think I want my feet to be?
The lowest of low, in my opinion, are the ones talking about the “secret programs the credit card companies don't want you to know about.” These are aimed at those who are way over their head with debt and are looking for options to try to save their house and in some cases family. There are no secret programs.
You know the worse part? Your credit card debt is typically unsecured debt. If they forgive it the odds are they will send you a 1099 for the amount forgiven. Now you don't owe a credit card company you can bankrupt out of, you owe the IRS and you are screw even worse than if you owed the bank. But don't fear there is a company that will lower your debt to the IRS by 80%. So if you owe $10,000 to the IRS their lawyers will take care of you.
The sad fact is that if they were not making money running these ads they would have lost their ass and there wouldn't be these commercials on the radio. But they are still here, and have been for a long time. Who are the people who are buying this stuff? I know it's not me, but there is still a sucker born every minute.
The people who know me are not going to believe this line. While I think business needs little regulation, if all radio and TV stations see from products, that the average person should know is “snake oil” is profit, then maybe someone should step in are shut off these scams with regulations. I think these businesses should self regulate, but I don't see it happening.
The FDA has tried to stop some of these products. Normally what happens is they revamp their product and ads and come back with a new name. Remember Smilin' Bob? Heeeeeeeeeeee's back.
Since the FDA can't seem to put these people out of business then maybe we need to attack the advertisers. To sell snake oil you need to constantly drum in the message until people start to believe it could be true. Without the instant access to advertisering they will not be able to get their message out, ergo, they will go out of business or not start at all.
Remember, “getting rid of stubborn belly fat takes more than diet and exercise.” I don't know if the product will help with belly fat but it will slim your wallet.

A friend of mine pointed out that we have a terrible system of educating young people on personal finance. It wouldn't take much time in the curriculum and it's very little to retain to have a large effect for citizens. But, as you point out, it will also have a large effect of these scams.
Be well.
I just had that conversation with my son. He is looking for his first job, so we are going to get him his checking account. It will add one more "must do" to keep his cell phone. He has to reconcile it every month and show me where he did it.
I also pointed out that if he would put $50 a month into a retirement account until he is 27 then quit, he would retire a millionaire. He liked that idea.
