This letter is fake and it is scary that someone is posting it. It further illustrates how the Internet is messing up life in the USA.

We don't have vast reserves of oil - not even half vast. Shale reserves? Ha! That's not oil.

What is wrong with shale oil? They have been extracting oil from sand and shale for years. It's not a new process.

Not knowing how he paid for his education without the visible way of paying for it doesn't bother you? If he would release his school records that would relieve that fear, but his refusal to do so makes it look like he has something to hide.

Even if we assume the most optimistic estimates of our conventional oil reserve, we have a roughly 5 year supply. A 5 year supply that will take more than 50 years to extract. Math speaks the truth.
Shale oil, ironically, isn't oil, nor is it found in shale.It's a pre-petroleum material called Kerogen, and it's found in Marlstone. It has to be processed with a great deal of water and the energy to cook it into synthetic crude. The "shale oil" should never be confused with conventional oil. Due to the high energy/water input, and extreme difficulty in extracting it and the pollution factor, one expert I read said: "Shale Oil is the energy source of the future, and always will be."
There are also many economic reasons we'll never be able to lower the price of oil. if we can't near totally offset oil imports -and we cannot, unless we have an alternative - exporting countries will simply dial back supplies to maintain or increase the price.

You are on the RIGHT track, now just keep coming our way.

You are right about what shale oil is and the problems extracting it. So why is it illegal to do it? If it's cost to refine it into a usable product is so high then nobody will do it. We will never know. Nobody in there right mind will invest the millions to find out if they can make an illegal product usable.

As for rolling back their production, they could do that. Their countries are hurting not just ours. They are as dependent on the oil income as we are the oil. Our to biggest import suppliers are Canada and Mexico. You don't think they need the money?

We know from history that every time we start to drill they lower their price and increase production to make it unprofitable to go into deep water, the north slope or work shale. So just making it available would cut the cost.

If you don't think prices are high here because of the cost of oil, pay for one of my fill ups. I'm about $500 to fill which I do every other day or so. Who do you think pays for that fuel? It's not me. I pass the cost along and it ends up being part of everything you spend your money on.

1. It's not illegal to extract shale oil. There have been efforts since the turn of the 20th century, when they were the US Navy shale oil deposits. There are several experimental efforts now, but you seem to forget the facts you acknowledged - high energy input, low return, water in a place where it's scarce already, and the potential to turn the Colorado River into a toxic ditch. Nobody is chomping at the bit to do "shale oil."

2. They roll back production which raises the price. They don't lose money. They laugh at the idea we can influence their price by increasing our piddlin' supply. Oil prices went down when the international economy crashed, and USDollars went into high demand to settle debts, raising their value. Declaring the restricted OCS as available didn't have a penny's impact.

3.Oil companies are already sitting on 5 bill. barrels of proven reserves. They don't drill them because it's not economically attractive. You suggest they wish to invest billions to lower their profits.

summation: We Simply Do Not Have Enough Oil.

If drilling for our own oil won't help anything, why did CA just authorize the use of the oil off their coast? Because it's money in their pocket.

Drilling for our own oil will increase jobs and bring in money that the states and feds need. Every barrel we produce here is one less imported and one more American job.

What is unemployment now? I dropped last week. That would be good news if the drop was due to people who stopped looking for work.

I'm all for drilling, but what we already know we have first. Cal will get royalties, but the US won't see oil prices drop.
I have few objections, just a realization of the supply and economics.

Then Paul why is drilling not allowed? You know the markets sometime react to just the possibility of something happening.

Dear President Obama:

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me. (hmm..could it be cause he is black. Or, maybe he is secretly muslim. What to pick their is so much to fear!)

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you. (Because when you speak to let people know why decisions are made cat and lion is googling where the next "birther" rally is)

You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support. (How dare he not do a reality show to entertain cat and lion)

You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American. (yes, people who are well traveled are not american. You are also responsible when you are two for where your parents raise or take you to visit. Last, how dare he learn about people from various cultures; what a sensitive freak!)

You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll. (Cause Bush sure did great running a baseball team into the ground!)

You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core. (I know, that Bush and cheney experience dodging the military really helped our foreign policy)

Taken out of context and dubious. Even if it were true, it would only prove that he was taking tips out of the Republican scare/smear/tell the biggest lie you can dirty tricks handbook. Surely you would proud that he is following in the footsteps of your beloved Shrub.

Drilling is allowed in the best places to get oil. The Gulf OCS, and all over America. There is no drilling ban. The newly opened OCS doesn't have the infrastructure in place, and it has less oil in smaller deposits. Oil companies aren't, again, chomping at the (drill) bit to get at it. Economics.
In other words, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less....was a whopper campaign lie.

What do I think of this letter? I think it is frightening. Statements like the following are incorrect and I think pander to racists. He was raised in Hawaii for goodness sake. Last time I checked this was a part of the US. There is also a great deal positive that could be said of someone that has international experience. I think that if we are disqualifying someone from the office of president, NOT having international experience might be one criteria:

The following is just plain incorrect. I will refer you to numerous economists who have advised President Obama and who have said that the stimulus (which was based on a study of 1980s Japan and the Depression), wasn't large enough. He compromised on the stimulus, and we maybe the worse off for it:

I can address the others if you wish, but they aren't substantive statements. They are mostly akin to name calling and don't refer to specific incidents. So, they are unanswerable. Not that they are meant to be. Rhetoric. High style.

Why Obama is misunderstood. He is not God. He is a man with limitations and weaknesses. He is there in his place because many believe that he can lead. The scariest thing is.. if it is allowed that many will sit down in the president's office to stand as presidents of the US in real time.

I know thi spost is old but I had to respond especially after reading this:-

If "shale oil" is not oil what is it? It has been a while since I last studied petroleum migration but if memory serves me right, all hydrocarbons conventional or not come from kerogen which is organic material. Even conventional oil is sourced from shales. Your comments on shale oil not being oil because it has to be processed by water and energy to convert it to synthetic crudes refers to a process call hydrogenation but that is only done on "oil sands" or "tar sands" which are indeed mined but not to be confused with "shale oil" such as the Bakken Shale and Eagle Ford Shale which flows to the pipelines on their own to pipelines and is not mined.
